Isaiah 04

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 AND in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.
2 In that day shall the branch of the Lord be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.
3 And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:
4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
5 And the Lord will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.
6 And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Seven women will take hold of one man on that day, saying: "We will eat our own food and wear our own clothing; Only let your name be given us, put an end to our disgrace!"

2 On that day, The branch of the LORD will be luster and glory, and the fruit of the earth will be honor and splendor for the survivors of Israel.

3 He who remains in Zion and he that is left in Jerusalem Will be called holy: every one marked down for life in Jerusalem.

4 When the Lord washes away the filth of the daughters of Zion, And purges Jerusalem's blood from her midst with a blast of searing judgment,

5 Then will the LORD create, over the whole site of Mount Zion and over her place of assembly, A smoking cloud by day and a light of flaming fire by night.

6 For over all, his glory will be shelter and protection: shade from the parching heat of day, refuge and cover from storm and rain.

COMMENTARIE

v 1. Following up the last several verses, so many men died and the women so disgraced that they beg for marriage, if only to have the status of a married name.

v 2. Although “that day” in v 1 refers to the Babylonian attack on Jerusalem, here it refers to the millennial reign of Christ. He is the Branch, sprouted from David. See this use also in Jer. 23:5; 33:15; Zech. 3:8.
v 3,4. Surviving Israel will then be purified and their mark of distinction holiness.
v 5,6. As God’s glory was visible at Mt Sinai, it will be then, and His glory will be like a tent covering them and giving them safety and peace.
