KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

IN that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.
2 Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.
3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
4 Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:
5 Nor he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.
6 The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.
7 The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.
8 Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.
9 With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10 Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.
12 Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.
13 O Lord our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.
14 They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.
15 Thou hast increased the nation, O Lord, thou hast increased the nation: thou art glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the earth.
16 Lord, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.
17 Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O Lord.
18 We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.
20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

21 For, behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

1In that day shall this song bee sung in the land of Iudah; Wee haue a strong citie, saluation will God appoint for walles and bulwarkes.

2Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the trueth may enter in.

3Thou wilt keepe him in perfect peace, whose minde is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee.

4Trust ye in the Lord for euer: for in the Lord Iehouah is euerlasting strength.

5 For hee bringeth downe them that dwell on high, the loftie citie he layeth it low; he layeth it low, euen to the ground, he bringeth it euen to the dust.

6The foote shall treade it downe, euen the feete of the poore, and the steps of the needie.

7The way of the iust is vprightnesse: thou most vpright, doest weigh the path of the iust.

8Yea in the way of thy Iudgements, O Lord, haue we waited for thee; the desire of our soule is to thy Name, and to the remembrance of thee.

9With my soule haue I desired thee in the night, yea with my spirit within me will I seeke thee early: for when thy iudgements are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learne righteousnesse.

10Let fauour be shewed to the wicked, yet will hee not learne righteousnesse: in the land of vprightnesse will he deale vniustly, and will not behold the maiestie of the Lord.

11Lord, when thy hand is lifted vp, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their enuie at the people, yea the fire of thine enemies shall deuoure them.

12 Lord, thou wilt ordaine peace for vs: for thou also hast wrought all our workes in vs.

13O Lord our God, other lordes besides thee haue had dominion ouer vs: but by thee only will we make mention of thy Name.

14They are dead, they shall not liue; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

15Thou hast increased the nation, O Lord, thou hast increased the nation, thou art glorified; thou hadst remooued it farre vnto all the ends of the earth.

16Lord, in trouble haue they visited thee: they powred out a prayer when thy chastening was vpon them.

17Like as a woman with childe that draweth neere the time of her deliuerie, is in paine and cryeth out in her pangs; so haue wee beene in thy sight, O Lord.

18Wee haue beene with childe, wee haue beene in paine, we haue as it were brought foorth winde, wee haue not wrought any deliuerance in the earth, neither haue the inhabitants of the world fallen.

19Thy dead men shall liue, together with my dead body shall they arise: awake and sing yee that dwell in dust: for thy dewe is as the dewe of herbes, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doores about thee; hide thy selfe as it were for a little moment, vntill the indignation be ouerpast.

21For behold, the Lord commeth out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquitie: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more couer her slaine.

1 On that day they will sing this song in the land of Judah: "A strong city have we; he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us.

2 Open up the gates to let in a nation that is just, one that keeps faith.

3 A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in you."

4 Trust in the LORD forever! For the LORD is an eternal Rock.

5 He humbles those in high places, and the lofty city he brings down; He tumbles it to the ground, levels it with the dust.

6 It is trampled underfoot by the needy, by the footsteps of the poor.

7 The way of the just is smooth; the path of the just you make level.

8 Yes, for your way and your judgments, O LORD, we look to you; Your name and your title are the desire of our souls.

9 My soul yearns for you in the night, yes, my spirit within me keeps vigil for you; When your judgment dawns upon the earth, the world's inhabitants learn justice.

10 The wicked man, spared, does not learn justice; in an upright land he acts perversely, and sees not the majesty of the LORD.

11 O LORD, your hand is uplifted, but they behold it not; Let them be shamed when they see your zeal for your people: let the fire prepared for your enemies consume them.

12 O LORD, you mete out peace to us, for it is you who have accomplished all we have done.

13 O LORD, our God, other lords than you have ruled us; it is from you only that we can call upon your name.

14 Dead they are, they have no life, shades that cannot rise; For you have punished and destroyed them, and wiped out all memory of them.

15 You have increased the nation, O LORD, increased the nation to your own glory, and extended far all the borders of the land.

16 O LORD, oppressed by your punishment, we cried out in anguish under your chastising.

17 As a woman about to give birth writhes and cries out in her pains, so were we in your presence, O LORD.

18 We conceived and writhed in pain, giving birth to wind; Salvation we have not achieved for the earth, the inhabitants of the world cannot bring it forth.

19 But your dead shall live, their corpses shall rise; awake and sing, you who lie in the dust. For your dew is a dew of light, and the land of shades gives birth.

20 Go, my people, enter your chambers, and close your doors behind you; Hide yourselves for a brief moment, until the wrath is past.

21 See, the LORD goes forth from his place, to punish the wickedness of the earth's inhabitants; The earth will reveal the blood upon her, and no longer conceal her slain.

v 1. This is a song to be sung by the redeemed when Messiah establishes His Millennial Kingdom. The Dead Sea Scrolls read, “You (Lord) have been to me a strong wall.” It will be a place of security.

v 2-4. The gates of the city will be open to the nations, but especially to Israel. A believer can have that perfect peace in his heart even today if we have full trust in Him.

v 5-9. The proud will be abased, but it is good for people to live righteously. Those who obey God will long for Him, but others will learn, will eventually be judged.

v 10,11. Many wicked will not learn from God’s grace to them, but will only learn and be shamed when they are judged.

v 12-15. Believers in the Kingdom will live in peace, but those who have had dominion over them, as was true in Isaiah’s day, will be dead under God’s judgment, but Israel’s national boundaries will be expanded. . v  16-18. Israel’s pains in the Tribulation is likened to a woman in childbirth. It will be as useless wind, because those who are not believers will not enter the Kingdom.

v 19. Israel’s believing dead will be resurrected at Christ’s Second Coming and will experience the blessings of the Millennial Kingdom.

v 20,21. The future remnant of Israel will hide in the Tribulation, but the wicked will be exposed and punished. This would give hope to believers of Isaiah’s day.
