1 IN the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod, (when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him,) and fought against Ashdod, and took it;
2 At the same time spake the Lord by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
3 And the Lord said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia;
4 So shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.
5 And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.
6 And the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation, whither we flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and how shall we escape?

2 the LORD gave a warning through Isaiah, the son of Amoz: Go and take off the sackcloth from your waist, and remove the sandals from your feet. This he did, walking naked and barefoot.

3 Then the LORD said: Just as my servant Isaiah has gone naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and portent against Egypt and Ethiopia,

4 so shall the king of Assyria lead away captives from Egypt, and exiles from Ethiopia, young and old, naked and barefoot, with buttocks uncovered (the shame of Egypt).

5 They shall be dismayed and ashamed because of Ethiopia, their hope, and because of Egypt, their boast.

6 The inhabitants of this coastland shall say on that day, "Look at our hope! We have fled here for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria; where can we flee now?"

v 1-6. This chapter is to tell Israel how foolish it would be to form an alliance with Ethiopia, chapter 18, or Egypt, chapter 19. Isaiah illustrated how those nations would go into captivity in total nakedness or rags, by removing his sackcloth and shoes and going only in his linen underwear for three years. (He was not totally naked, which was an abomination before God.)

Sargon: This is the only known mention of the use of the word Sargon in extant ancient literature. The critics tried to say the bible had a blunder in it. Botta discovered the ruins of the Sargon's place in 1842 in khorsabad, on the north edge of Nineveh . Among the ruins were treasures and inscriptions showing Sargon to have been one of Assyria's greatest kings. Yet the name of Sargon had disappeared from history except for the bible until Botta's discovery
