KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

1 MOREOVER the Lord said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
2 And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.
3 And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the Lord to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
4 For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.
5 The Lord spake also unto me again, saying,
6 Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;
7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:
8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
9 Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.
10 Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.
11 For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,
12 Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.
13 Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
17 And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.
18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
21 And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.
22 And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.

1Moreouer the Lord said vnto mee, Take thee a great roule, and write in it with a mans penne, concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

2And I tooke vnto mee faithfull witnesses to record, Uriah the Priest, and Zechariah the sonne of Ieberechiah.

3And I went vnto the Prophetesse, and shee conceiued and bare a sonne, then said the Lord to mee, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

4For before the childe shall haue knowledge to cry, My father and my mother, the riches of Damascus, and the spoile of Samaria shalbe taken away before the king of Assyria.

5 The Lord spake also vnto me againe, saying,

6For so much as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that goe softly, and reioyce in Rezin, and Remaliahs sonne:

7Now therefore behold, the Lord bringeth vp vpon them the waters of the riuer strong and many, euen the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come vp ouer all his channels, and goe ouer all his bankes.

8And hee shall passe through Iudah, he shall ouerflow and goe ouer, he shall reach euen to the necke; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

9 Associate your selues, O ye people, and yee shalbe broken in pieces; and giue eare all ye of farre countreys: gird your selues, and ye shalbe broken in pieces; gird your selues, and ye shalbe broken in pieces.

10Take counsell together, and it shall come to nought: speake the word, and it shall not stand; for God is with vs.

11 For the Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walke in the way of this people, saying,

12Say ye not, A confederacie to all them, to whom this people shall say, A confederacie; neither feare yee their feare, nor be afraid.

13Sanctifie the Lord of hostes himselfe, and let him bee your feare, and let him be your dread.

14And he shalbe for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rocke of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a ginne, and for a snare to the inhabitants of Ierusalem.

15And many among them shall stumble and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

16Binde vp the Testimonie, seale the Law among my disciples.

17And I wil wait vpon the Lord that hideth his face from the house of Iacob, and I will looke for him.

18Behold, I, and the children whom the Lord hath giuen me, are for signes, and for wonders in Israel: from the Lord of hostes, which dwelleth in mount Zion.

19 And when they shall say vnto you; Seeke vnto them that haue familiar spirits, and vnto wizards that peepe and that mutter: should not a people seeke vnto their God? for the liuing, to the dead?

20To the Law and to the Testimonie: if they speake not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

21And they shall passe through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to passe, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselues, and curse their King, and their God, and looke vpward.

22And they shall looke vnto the earth: and behold trouble and darkenesse, dimnesse of anguish; and they shall be driuen to darkenesse.

1 The LORD said to me: Take a large cylinder-seal, and inscribe on it in ordinary letters: "Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz."

2 And I took reliable witnesses, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah, son of Jeberechiah.

3 Then I went to the prophetess and she conceived and bore a son. The LORD said to me: Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz,

4 for before the child knows how to call his father or mother by name, the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be carried off by the king of Assyria.

5 Again the LORD spoke to me:

6 Because this people has rejected the waters of Shiloah that flow gently, And melts with fear before the loftiness of Rezin and Remaliah's son,

7 Therefore the LORD raises against them the waters of the River, great and mighty (the king of Assyria and all his power). It shall rise above all its channels, and overflow all its banks;

8 It shall pass into Judah, and flood it all throughout: up to the neck it shall reach; It shall spread its wings the full width of your land, Immanuel!

9 Know, O peoples, and be appalled! Give ear, all you distant lands! Arm, but be crushed! Arm, but be crushed!

10 Form a plan, and it shall be thwarted; make a resolve, and it shall not be carried out, for "With us is God!"

11 For thus said the LORD to me, taking hold of me and warning me not to walk in the way of this people:

12 Call not alliance what this people calls alliance, and fear not, nor stand in awe of what they fear.

13 But with the LORD of hosts make your alliance - for him be your fear and your awe.

14 Yet he shall be a snare, an obstacle and a stumbling stone to both the houses of Israel, A trap and a snare to those who dwell in Jerusalem;

15 And many among them shall stumble and fall, broken, snared, and captured.

16 The record is to be folded and the sealed instruction kept among my disciples.

17 For I will trust in the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob; yes, I will wait for him.

18 Look at me and the children whom the Lord has given me: we are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts who dwells on Mount Zion.

19 And when they say to you, "Inquire of mediums and fortune-tellers (who chirp and mutter!); should not a people inquire of their gods, apply to the dead on behalf of the living?" -

20 then this document will furnish its instruction. That kind of thing they will surely say.

21 23 First he degraded the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the end he has glorified the seaward road, the land West of the Jordan, the District of the Gentiles. Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness; for there is no gloom where but now there was distress.

v 1-4. To dramatize his point, Isaiah was to call witnesses and write on a large scroll in the common language the name Maher-shalal-hash-baz, meaning “haste to the spoil”. This was to be his son’s name before he was even conceived. That was to assure the people that judgment was definitely coming soon. Instead of turning to God, Uriah (Urijah) the priest made an altar which Ahaz copied off the heathen, 2 Ki. 16:11.

v 5-8. The northern kingdom had rejected the gentle flowing waters, indicating Jerusalem, and Judah had followed her example. Therefore a flood (armies of Assyria) would sweep over Judah to the neck, almost drowning her. The picture is changed to a giant bird overshadowing the land, but “Immanuel” indicated God was still with them.

v 9,10. The nations would have temporary victory, but God was still with Judah.

v 11-15. Judah was not to fear the confederacy of Syria and Samaria, but trust in the Lord. He would be a stone of stumbling to those who did not believe, 1 Pet. 2:8.

v 16-18. The people were to seal up the word of God in their hearts, here referring to Isaiah and the one in Peter referring to Christ. Isaiah was confident in God because of the sign of his two sons, “haste ye to the spoil” and “a remnant shall return”.

v 19-22. Isaiah rebuked the people for seeking to know the future by consulting wizards and the dead instead of believing God’s word. They would face darkness.
