HEAR ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. |
1Heare yee this, O house of Iacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come foorth out of the waters of Iudah; which sweare by the Name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in trueth nor in righteousnes. 2For they call themselues of the holy city, and stay themselues vpon the God of Israel, the Lord of hostes is his Name. 3I haue declared the former things from the beginning: and they went foorth out of my mouth, and I shewed them, I did them suddenly, and they came to passe. 4Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy necke is an yron sinew, and thy brow brasse: 5I haue euen from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to passe I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idole hath done them, and my grauen image, and my molten image hath commanded them. 6Thou hast heard, see all this, and will not yee declare it? I haue shewed thee new things from this time, euen hidden things, and thou didst not know them. 7They are created now, and not from the beginning, euen before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. 8Yea thou heardest not, yea thou knewest not, yea from that time that thine eare was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deale very treacherously, and wast called a transgressour from the wombe. 9 For my names sake will I deferre mine anger, and for my praise will I refraine for thee, that I cut thee not off. 10Behold, I haue refined thee, but not with siluer; I haue chosen thee in the fornace of affliction. 11For mine owne sake, euen for mine owne sake will I doe it; for how should my Name bee polluted? And I will not giue my glory vnto another. 12 Hearken vnto me, O Iacob, and Israel my called; I am hee, I am the first, I also am the last. 13Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heauens: when I call vnto them, they stand vp together. 14All yee assemble your selues and heare: which among them hath declared these things? the Lord hath loued him: hee will doe his pleasure on Babylon, and his arme shall be on the Caldeans. 15I, euen I haue spoken, yea I haue called him: I haue brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous. 16 Come ye neere vnto me; heare ye this; I haue not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I; and now the Lord God and his Spirit hath sent me. 17Thus saith the Lord thy redeemer, the holy one of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest goe. 18O that thou haddest hearkened to my commandements! then had thy peace beene as a riuer, and thy righteousnesse as the waues of the sea. 19Thy seede also had beene as the sand, and the ofspring of thy bowels like the grauell thereof: his name should not haue beene cut off, nor destroyed from before me. 20 Goe yee forth of Babylon: flee yee from the Caldeans, with a voyce of singing, declare yee, tell this, vtter it euen to the end of the earth: say yee; The Lord hath redeemed his seruant Iacob. 21And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts; he caused the waters to flow out of the rocke for them: he claue the rocke also, and the waters gushed out. 22There is no peace, saith the Lord, vnto the wicked. |

1 Hear this, O house of Jacob called by the name Israel, sprung from the stock of Judah, You who swear by the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel without sincerity or justice, 2 Though you are named after the holy city and rely on the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD of hosts. 3 Things of the past I foretold long ago, they went forth from my mouth, I let you hear of them; then suddenly I took action and they came to be. 4 Because I know that you are stubborn and that your neck is an iron sinew and your forehead bronze, 5 I foretold them to you of old; before they took place I let you hear of them, That you might not say, "My idol did them, my statue, my molten image commanded them." 6 Now that you have heard, look at all this; must you not admit it? From now on I announce new things to you, hidden events of which you knew not. 7 Now, not long ago, they are brought into being, and beforetime you did not hear of them, so that you cannot claim to have known them; 8 You neither heard nor knew, they did not reach your ears beforehand. Yes, I know you are utterly treacherous, a rebel you were called from birth. 9 For the sake of my name I restrain my anger, for the sake of my renown I hold it back from you, lest I should destroy you. 10 See, I have refined you like silver, tested you in the furnace of affliction. 11 For my sake, for my own sake, I do this; why should I suffer profanation? My glory I will not give to another. 12 Listen to me, Jacob, Israel, whom I named! I, it is I who am the first, and also the last am I. 13 Yes, my hand laid the foundations of the earth; my right hand spread out the heavens. When I call them, they stand forth at once. 14 All of you assemble and listen: Who among you foretold these things? The LORD'S friend shall do his will against Babylon and the progeny of Chaldea. 15 I myself have spoken, I have called him, I have brought him, and his way succeeds! 16 Come near to me and hear this! Not from the beginning did I speak it in secret; At the time it comes to pass, I am present: "Now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his spirit." 17 Thus says the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go. 18 If you would hearken to my commandments, your prosperity would be like a river, and your vindication like the waves of the sea; 19 Your descendants would be like the sand, and those born of your stock like its grains, Their name never cut off or blotted out from my presence. 20 Go forth from Babylon, flee from Chaldea! With shouts of joy proclaim this, make it known; Publish it to the ends of the earth, and say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob. 21 They did not thirst when he led them through dry lands; Water from the rock he set flowing for them; he cleft the rock, and waters welled forth." 22 (There is no peace for the wicked, says the LORD.) |
v 1-5. Israel was hypocritical, claiming to be “believers” while actually trusting self and idols. V 3 indicates they would be content in captivity and not desire to return to Jerusalem. The Lord told them ahead of time, so they couldn’t claim idols told them.
v 6-11. Even though they were treacherous, God is giving them new prophesy that He would delay, or withhold, His wrath so they could return from captivity. This would be for His own sake. He had brought them out of the furnace affliction in Egypt, Deut. 4:20; Jer. 11:4, and had refined them through circumstances, not like silver is.
v 12-15. Isaiah repeats three things about the Lord. 1, He is eternal. 2, He is the Creator. 3, He can foretell the future, here referring to Cyrus conquering Babylon .
v 16. God had not been secretive about Cyrus and is not secretive about His Son, here expressing the Trinity, Christ is speaking, not Isaiah. v 17-19. The Great God had taught Israel what to do, but they disobeyed or they would have had peace, not exile, and their children would not have died. Obedience can also give us peace like a quiet river, not a raging torrent, v 22.
V 20-22. God urges Israel to return to the land joyfully when Cyrus releases them. He will provide the way just as He did from Egypt. Contrast v 18 with 22 and 57:21.
