KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

1 IN the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
12 And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.
13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

1In the yeere that King Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord sitting vpon a throne, high and lifted vp, and his traine filled the Temple.

2Aboue it stood the Seraphims: each one had sixe wings, with twaine he couered his face, and with twaine hee couered his feete, and with twaine hee did flie.

3And one cryed vnto another, and sayd; Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hostes, the whole earth is full of his glory.

4And the posts of the doore moued at the voyce of him that cryed, and the house was filled with smoke.

5 Then sayd I; woe is me; for I am vndone, because I am a man of vncleane lippes, and I dwell in the midst of a people of vncleane lippes: for mine eyes haue seene the king, the Lord of hostes.

6Then flew one of the Seraphims vnto mee, hauing a liue-cole in his hand, which hee had taken with the tongs from off the altar.

7And he laide it vpon my mouth, and sayd, Loe, this hath touched thy lippes, and thine iniquitie is taken away, and thy sinne purged.

8Also I heard the voyce of the Lord, saying; Whom shall I send, and who will goe for vs? Then I saide; Heere am I, send me.

9 And he sayd, Goe and tell this people; Heare yee indeede, but vnderstand not: and see yee indeed, but perceiue not.

10Make the heart of this people fat, and make their eares heauy, and shut their eyes: lest they see with their eyes, and heare with their eares, and vnderstand with their heart, and conuert and be healed.

11Then sayd I; Lord, how long? And hee answered, Untill the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be vtterly desolate,

12And the Lord haue remoued men farre away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

13 But yet in it shalbe a tenth, and it shall returne, and shall be eaten: as a Teyle tree, and as an Oke whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaues: so the holy seede shall be the substance thereof.

1 In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple.

2 Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered aloft.

3 "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!" they cried one to the other. "All the earth is filled with his glory!"

4 At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke.

5 Then I said, "Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an ember which he had taken with tongs from the altar.

7 He touched my mouth with it. "See," he said, "now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged."

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" "Here I am," I said; "send me!"

9 And he replied: Go and say to this people: Listen carefully, but you shall not understand! Look intently, but you shall know nothing!

10 You are to make the heart of this people sluggish, to dull their ears and close their eyes; Else their eyes will see, their ears hear, their heart understand, and they will turn and be healed.

11 "How long, O Lord?" I asked. And he replied: Until the cities are desolate, without inhabitants, Houses, without a man, and the earth is a desolate waste.

12 Until the LORD removes men far away, and the land is abandoned more and more.

13 If there be still a tenth part in it, then this in turn shall be laid waste; As with a terebinth or an oak whose trunk remains when its leaves have fallen. (Holy offspring is the trunk.)

v 1. This experience took place in the twelve month period before or after Uzziah died, and Isaiah had probably been ministering previously the events of chapters one to five. This was a vision, or could have been a pre incarnate appearance of Christ. He was on a throne, not the mercy seat, and His magnificent robe filled the temple.
v 2-4. These angelic beings covered their faces in humility before God. Covering their feet showed humble service, and flying was their activity proclaiming the Lord. As one proclaimed holiness of the Lord to the other (or others) an earthquake shook the huge threshold stones and the smoke or glory cloud of the Lord filled the temple.
v 5. Isaiah had been pronouncing woes on the people, but when he saw himself in relationship to the holiness of the Lord, he called woe on himself, identifying himself with the sins of the people. Unclean lips reveal our unclean hearts.
v 6,7. A seraphim (burning one, perhaps for their burning zeal or brightness) took a hot coal from the brazen or incense altar and purified Isaiah’s lips with it (in vision).
v 8. Now that Isaiah is cleansed, he readily responds to the Lord’s call to serve. he had been motivated to proclaim the vision of the first five chapters and was perhaps discouraged at the response. At any rate, God gives him a vision so awe inspiring that it challenged him to respond and motivated him to keep on preaching till he died.
v 9.,10. In case Isaiah thought his work would now be more fruitful, God warns him of the hardness of the people. Jesus quoted a part of this in Jn. 12:40 to point out that the people could not believe because they would not believe.
v 11-13. Isaiah wondered how long to keep preaching in those circumstances, and the Lord told him in effect until Israel was destroyed and exiled by Babylonians. Nevertheless, a decimated remnant would be preserved to produce other believers.
