1 WHEN therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
3 He left Judæa, and departed again into Galilee.
4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilæans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judæa into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
52 Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judæa into Galilee.

11The woman saith vnto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to drawe with, and the Well is deepe: from whence then hast thou that liuing water?

12Art thou greater then our father Iacob, which gaue vs the Well, and dranke thereof himselfe, and his children, and his cattell?

13Iesus answered, and said vnto her, Whosoeuer drinketh of this water, shall thirst againe:

14But whosoeuer drinketh of the water that I shal giue him, shall neuer thirst: but the water that I shall giue him, shalbe in him a well of water springing vp into euerlasting life.

15The woman saith vnto him, Sir, giue me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

16Iesus saith vnto her, Goe, call thy husband, and come hither.

17The woman answered, and said, I haue no husband. Iesus said vnto her, Thou hast well said, I haue no husband:

18For thou hast had fiue husbands, and he whom thou now hast, is not thy husband: In that saidest thou truely.

19The woman saith vnto him, Sir, I perceiue that thou art a Prophet.

20Our fathers worshipped in this mountaine, and ye say, that in Hierusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21Iesus saith vnto her, Woman, beleeue me, the houre commeth when ye shall neither in this mountaine, nor yet at Hierusalem, worship the Father.

22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for saluation is of the Iewes.

23But the houre commeth, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit, and in trueth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24God is a Spirit, and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit, and in trueth.

25The woman saith vnto him, I know that Messias commeth, which is called Christ: when he is come, hee will tell vs all things.

26Iesus sayth vnto her, I that speake vnto thee, am hee.

27 And vpon this came his disciples, and marueiled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou, or, Why talkest thou with her?

28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and sayth to the men,

29Come, see a man, which tolde me all things that euer I did: Is not this the Christ?

30Then they went out of the citie, and came vnto him.

31 In the meane while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eate.

32But hee said vnto them, I haue meate to eate that ye know not of.

33Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eate?

34Iesus saith vnto them, My meat is, to doe the will of him that sent mee, and to finish his worke.

35Say not ye, There are yet foure moneths, and then commeth haruest? Behold, I say vnto you, Lift vp your eyes, and looke on the fields: for they are white already to haruest.

36And hee that reapeth receiueth wages, and gathereth fruite vnto life eternall: that both he that soweth, and he that reapeth, may reioyce together.

37And herein is that saying true: One soweth, and another reapeth.

38I sent you to reape that, whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and yee are entred into their labours.

39 And many of the Samaritanes of that citie beleeued on him, for the saying of the woman, which testified, Hee told me all that euer I did.

40So when the Samaritanes were come vnto him, they besought him that he would tarie with them, and he abode there two dayes.

41And many moe beleeued, because of his owne word:

42And said vnto the woman, Now we beleeue, not because of thy saying, for we haue heard him our selues, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Sauiour of the world.

43 Now after two dayes he departed thence, and went into Galilee:

44For Iesus himselfe testified, that a Prophet hath no honour in his owne countrey.

45Then when hee was come into Galilee, the Galileans receiued him, hauing seene all the things that hee did at Hierusalem at the Feast: for they also went vnto the Feast.

46So Iesus came againe into Cana of Galilee, where hee made the water wine. And there was a certaine noble man, whose sonne was sicke at Capernaum.

47When he heard that Iesus was come out of Iudea into Galilee, hee went vnto him, and besought him that he would come downe, and heale his sonne: for he was at the point of death.

48Then said Iesus vnto him, Except ye see signes and wonders, yee will not beleeue.

49The noble man saith vnto him, Syr, come downe ere my child die.

50Iesus saith vnto him, Go thy way, thy sonne liueth. And the man beleeued the word that Iesus had spoken vnto him, and he went his way.

51And as he was now going down, his seruants met him, and told him, saying, Thy sonne liueth.

52Then inquired hee of them the houre when he began to amend: and they said vnto him, Yesterday at the seuenth houre the feuer left him.

53So the father knewe that it was at the same houre, in the which Iesus said vnto him, Thy sonne liueth, and himselfe beleeued, and his whole house.

54This is againe the second miracle that Iesus did, when hee was come out of Iudea into Galilee.

 

1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, just his disciples), 3 he left Judea and returned to Galilee. 4 He had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." 8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." 11 (The woman) said to him, "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?" 13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; 14 but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." 16 Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband and come back." 17 The woman answered and said to him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.' 18 For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true." 19 The woman said to him, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem." 21 Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth." 25 The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything." 26 Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you." 27 At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one said, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you talking with her?" 28 The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people, 29 "Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?" 30 They went out of the town and came to him. 31 Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat." 32 But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." 33 So the disciples said to one another, "Could someone have brought him something to eat?" 34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Do you not say, 'In four months the harvest will be here'? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest. 36 The reaper is already receiving his payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. 37 For here the saying is verified that 'One sows and another reaps.' 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work." 39 Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I have done." 40 When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41 Many more began to believe in him because of his word, 42 and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world." 43 After the two days, he left there for Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his native place. 45 When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast. 46 Then he returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death. 48 Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe." 49 The royal official said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." 50 Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son will live." The man believed what Jesus said to him and left. 51 While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live. 52 He asked them when he began to recover. They told him, "The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon." 53 The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he and his whole household came to believe. 54 (Now) this was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea.  

v 1-4. This is one sentence. The Pharisees were taking note of Jesus, and since they would be wanting to kill Him before His appointed time, it was best to leave. Jesus could have taken the longer route through Perea, as most other Jews did to avoid the Samaritans, but He wanted to reach those people. Samaritans were a mixed race of Jews and immigrants brought in by there captors, and their religion was also a mixture.
v 5,6. Sychar was near Shechem, on the eastern slope of Mt Ebal. Jesus had all the attributes of Deity, but humanly also felt hunger, thirst and weariness. The 6th hour was 6:00 PM as Rome and John count time. Gen. 24:11; 1 Sam. 9:11  It is definitely true that women came to draw water in the evening, Gen. 24:11. The context of 1 Sam. 9 is that the maidens came in the evening to draw water. (Some say this woman came at noon since this she was immoral wouldn’t come when the other women came.)
7-9. It was against common practice for a man to speak to a woman, a Jew to speak to a Samaritan, especially a rabbi, and to a stranger. This was a surprise to the woman of the country, not city of Samaria, as other rabbis would rather go thirsty than ask her. It was considered unclean to even eat from a dish a Samaritan had used.
v 10. She did not know He was Christ, the gift of God was eternal life, or that the living water was the Holy Spirit.
v 11,12. Jacob’s well 100-150 feet deep when dug, 75 now, 9 wide, a great job. How could Jesus top that? She had religion mixed with Jews to call Jacob “our father”.
v 13,14. This water would satisfy thirst briefly, the Holy Spirit gives inner peace.
v 15. She did not understand.
v 16-18. Jesus showed He knew about her five husbands and present immorality.
v 19,20. Instead of confessing her sin, she brought up a religious argument.
v 21-24. Jews, not Samaritans, had the way of salvation, but soon Christ would die, and in the Church, people would worship the Father in spirit and truth everywhere. How we worship is more important than where we worship. 
v 25,26 Samaritans accepted only the books of Moses, so did not know the coming Messiah would be from David’s line. She wished Messiah was there to explain things. Jesus declared Himself, which was usually unwise to do before Jews who would make him king or those who would seek to kill Him.
v 27-30. When the surprised disciples arrived she forgot her water pot or to give Jesus a drink and rushed to tell others. She posed it as a question if this was Messiah.
v 31-34. The disciples were just as surprised as the woman, that Jesus talked to her and Him refreshed. Sometimes spiritual food over rides the desire for physical food and serving the Lord over physical rest. Both are needed, but can be prioritized.
v 35. There is a delay between sowing and harvest, but 2 Cor. 6:2, now is the day of salvation. Perhaps seeing people coming in white garments reminded of ripe grain.
v 36-38. Perhaps here or elsewhere John the Baptist and others sowed seeds of the truth, and the disciples are reaping the harvest, but both will be rewarded.
v 39-42. Now as then, personal testimony along with the Word lead to salvation, but hearing the Word is the essential key to be truly born again.
v 43-45. After two successful days Jesus went to Galilee but avoided Nazareth, his own country. Galileans saw his power and popularity at the Passover, but much of their enthusiasm was superficial, and many of them also left Him, 6:66.
v 46-50. This official was probably a Jew because he sought a sign, but he came to the point of begging for mercy. His faith was shown by accepting Jesus’ word that a healing would take place 25 miles away. 
51-54. His faith was confirmed by the time of healing (Illus. When our baby was not expected to live, we prayed just before I left the hospital. When I returned, a smiling nurse, said, “Your baby started getting better right after you left the hospital”.)
The nobleman first believed Jesus’ word for the healing. Then he believed to be a disciple, so all his house believed. Neither the wine or healing at Cana were done in view of public.
