KING JAMES BIBLE

1 I AM the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.
18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
KING JAMES 1611

1I am the true vine, and my Father is þe husbandman.

2Euery branch in me that beareth not fruit, hee taketh away: and euery branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring foorth more fruit.

3Now ye are cleane through the word which I haue spoken vnto you.

4Abide in me, and in you: As the branch cannot beare fruit of itselfe, except it abide in the vine: no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can doe nothing.

6If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall aske what ye will, and it shall be done vnto you.

8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye beare much fruit, so shall ye bee my Disciples.

9As the Father hath loued me, so haue I loued you: continue ye in my loue.

10If ye keepe my Commandements, ye shal abide in my loue, euen as I haue kept my Fathers Commandements, and abide in his loue.

11These things haue I spoken vnto you, that my ioy might remaine in you, and that your ioy might be full.

12This is my Commaundement, that ye loue one another, as I haue loued you.

13Greater loue hath no man then this, that a man lay downe his life for his friends.

14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoeuer I command you.

15Henceforth I call you not seruants, for the seruant knoweth not what his lord doth, but I haue called you friends: for all things that I haue heard of my Father, I haue made knowen vnto you.

16Ye haue not chosen me, but I haue chosen you, and ordeined you, that you should goe and bring foorth fruit, and that your fruite should remaine: that whatsoeuer ye shall aske of the Father in my Name, he may giue it you.

17These things I commaund you, that ye loue one another.

18If the world hate you, yee know that it hated me before it hated you.

19If ye were of the world, the world would loue his owne: But because yee are not of the world, but I haue chosen you out of the world, therfore the world hateth you.

20Remember the word that I said vnto you, The seruant is not greater then the Lord: if they haue persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they haue kept my saying, they will keepe yours also.

21But all these things will they doe vnto you for my Names sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22If I had not come, and spoken vnto them, they had not had sinne: but now they haue no cloke for their sinne.

23He that hateth me, hateth my Father also.

24If I had not done among thē the works which none other man did, they had not had sinne: but now haue they both seene, & hated both me & my father.

25But this commeth to passe, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26But when the Comforter is come, whom I wil send vnto you from the Father, euen the Spirit of trueth, which proceedeth from the Father, hee shall testifie of me.

27And ye also shall beare witnesse, because ye haue bene with me from the beginning.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. 2 He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. 3 You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. 4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8 By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 9 As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. 11 "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. 16 It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. 17 This I command you: love one another. 18 "If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. 20 Remember the word I spoke to you, 'No slave is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin; but as it is they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me also hates my Father. 24 If I had not done works among them that no one else ever did, they would not have sin; but as it is, they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But in order that the word written in their law might be fulfilled, 'They hated me without cause.' 26 "When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. 27 And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

COMMENTARIE

In coming verses Jesus speaks directly to His disciples and they are given three relationships and three duties. 1 Right relationship to Jesus, 1-10, abide;  2 To each other, love each other, 11-17;  3 To the world, 18-16:4, testify or witness. They may have been walking beside a vineyard which was used as an object lesson. Fruits may be of righteousness, Heb. 12:11 and fruit of the Spirit, Gal. 5:22,23.
v 1. Israel was God’s choice vine, Isa. 5:7 etc., but they produced rotten fruit, Hos. 10:1. Christ is the True Vine, and the Father is the gardener of the vine.
v 2. Eight times in this chapter God desires fruit. Fruit He desired from Israel was obedience, righteousness and judgment, Isa. 5:1-7. Those here who bear no fruit are false professors, and are eventually taken away. Believers are pruned to bear more.
v 3. Judas, the disciple removed (pruned), was not clean., a mere professor
v 4. Disciples are to abide, or remain, meaning believing and continuing in belief, with no unconfessed sin. We must remain in Christ if we are to produce fruit.
v 5,6. We, as branches, must be sustained by Christ, the Vine, and can then bear much fruit. Unbelievers bear no fruit.  Every believer can bear fruit, and after pruning, more fruit, but in a close walk, we can bear much fruit.  False professors are dead wood and will be burned.
v 7,8. If we are closely abiding in Christ and His Word, our hearts will be in such relationship that we will have faith and pray in His will, and the answer is assured. Bearing much fruit glorifies the Father.
v 9,10. There is a union between the Father, the Son and ourselves, which we will express by loving obedience.
11. It was a joy for Christ to obey the Father, and obedience will bring us joy.
v 12. Instead of arguing who is greatest, we are commanded to have mutual love.
v 13,14. Christ demonstrated His love by dying for His friends. Actually, He died for His enemies, in order to make them His friends.
v 15-17. Bear in mind Jesus was giving His disciples some last minute instruction before He would leave them. He is not calling them slaves, disciples or apostles, but friends. They may have shown interest in Him, but He chose them to be His disciples. Paul says we are also “ the called of Jesus Christ:”, Rom. 1:6. We also should love one another as Jesus stressed to His disciples. We should be obedient to the task, not go ahead or lag behind. A WW 2 officer was commanded to proceed to a German town and wait. He decided to go on in, resulting in serious injuries to his men.
v 18. Jesus was hated from birth (Herod), so He warns His disciples of the same.
v 19. Christ chose us out of this world system, and since our purposes and values have changed to better things, the world turns against us.
v 20,21. Jesus repeats His comparison in 13:16 on the basis the unbelieving world is at enmity with God, James 4:4 so they will also be at enmity with us and persecute us. This is because they don’t know God, their leader is Satan. The King of France murdered Huguenots, his choice people, and France still suffers effects of that.
v 22,23. If Jesus had not come, they might have plead innocence. They willfully rejected Him, and also hated the Father. Their sin is rejecting Christ, Jn. 3:18. In  Mk. 7:6 Jesus reminded them of Isaiah 29:13, “This people honored me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” There is hatred against the Ten Commandments and other moral issues in America today because the opponents hate God.
v 24,25. Because of His outstanding miracles in v 22, they would not have been so aware of their sin, even though it was declared in the Law of Moses. Their hatred of Jesus was irrational, but this is true of many groups who are not born again.
v 26,27. The disciples testified as eye witnesses, and the Holy Spirit persuaded people. It is still the Holy Spirit who draws people as we give forth the Word.
