John 17

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 THESE words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

KING JAMES 1611

1These words spake Iesus, and lift vp his eyes to heauen, and said, Father, the houre is come, glorifie thy Sonne, that thy Sonne also may glorifie thee.

2As thou hast giuen him power ouer all flesh, that he should giue eternall life to as many as thou hast giuen him.

3And this is life eternall, that they might know thee the onely true God, and Iesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

4I haue glorified thee on the earth: I haue finished the worke which thou gauest me to doe.

5And now O Father, glorifie thou me, with thine owne selfe, with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

6I haue manifested thy Name vnto the men which thou gauest me out of the world: thine they were; and thou gauest them me; and they haue kept thy word.

7Now they haue knowen that all things whatsoeuer thou hast giuen me, are of thee.

8For I haue giuen vnto them the words which thou gauest me, and they haue receiued them, and haue knowen surely that I came out from thee, and they haue beleeued that thou didst send me.

9I pray for them, I pray not for the world: but for them which thou hast giuen me, for they are thine.

10And all mine are thine, and thine are mine: and I am glorified in them.

11And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine owne Name, those whom thou hast giuen mee, that they may bee one, as we are.

12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy Name: those that thou gauest me, I haue kept, and none of them is lost, but the sonne of perdition: that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

13And now come I to thee, and these things I speake in the world, that they might haue my ioy fulfilled in themselues.

14I haue giuen them thy word, and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, euen as I am not of the world.

15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keepe them from the euill.

16They are not of the world, euen as I am not of the world.

17Sanctifie them through thy trueth: thy word is trueth.

18As thou hast sent mee into the world: euen so haue I also sent them into the world.

19And for their sakes I sanctifie my selfe, that they also might be sanctified through the trueth.

20Neither pray I for these alone; but for them also which shall beleeue on me through their word:

21That they all may be one, as thou Father art in mee, and I in thee, that they also may bee one in vs: that the world may beleeue that thou hast sent mee.

22And the glory which thou gauest me, I haue giuen them: that they may be one, euen as we are one:

23I in them, and thou in mee, that they may bee made perfect in one, and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loued them, as thou hast loued me.

24Father, I will that they also whom thou hast giuen me, be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory which thou hast giuen mee: for thou louedst mee before the foundation of the world.

25O righteous Father, the world hath not knowen thee, but I haue knowen thee, and these haue knowen that thou hast sent me.

26And I haue declared vnto them thy Name, and will declare it: that the loue wherewith thou hast loued mee, may be in them, and I in them.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, 2 just as you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to all you gave him. 3 Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. 4 I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. 5 Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began. 6 "I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, 8 because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, 10 and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are. 12 When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely. 14 I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. 17 Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. 19 And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth. 20 "I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. 22 And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me. 26 I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them."

COMMENTARIE

v 1. Assuming Jesus and the eleven are walking toward Gethsemane, He stops, lifts His eyes toward heaven and prays His prayer, not the prayer He taught disciples in Matt. 6:9-13. Several times Jesus had said, “My time is not yet come”, but now the time has come for God’s redemptive plan to be fulfilled. Request 1, That Jesus would be glorified as the Son who glorified the Father. This would include His suffering, death and resurrection. In verses 1-5 Jesus is praying for Himself.
v 2. The Father gave Christ authority over all the earth so He could judge, take up His life, and give eternal life to those God has given Him. Christ also gave them the Father’s name, 6:26;  the Father’s words, 8, 14; His own joy, v 13; His own glory, v 22.
v 3. To “know” the Father and Son in a very intimate way, a personal relationship. This is the same word “know”, sometimes used for the intimacy of sexual relationship.
v 4. The cross was not yet fulfilled, but was “finished”, since it was a sure thing.
v 5. Request 2, Restoration to His eternal glory. based on His finished work.
v 6-8. This little group of disciples had been called out of the world by the Father and given to Christ. There was a lot they didn’t understand yet, but they believed His words and had left all to follow Him, believing He came from God.
v 9,10. In 6-19 He is praying for His disciples, specifically the eleven.
v 11. Request 3a, For the safety of believers  Hostility of the world against Christ would now fall on the disciples. He prayed for their protection so that there would be unity among them (believers) that they might be one with Him and the Father.
v 12. Jesus had watched over them carefully and lost none but Judas, who never was a true believer, and allowed Satan to use him as foretold, Ps. 41:9.
v 13. Jesus’ words of the last few hours had been disturbing, but when He arose, they would bring joy and comfort to the disciples.
v 14. Since Jesus had given them the Father’s words, the hatred that had been against Jesus would soon be heaped on them for exposing the sins of the world.
v 15,16. Request 3 b, Safety from the evil one. The disciples were not of the world but needed to be left in the world as witnesses. We too must remain in meaningful contact with the world without becoming part of the Satanic world system.
v 17. Request 4, For the sanctification of believers. Still today, if we appropriate the truths of God’s word in our lives, we are set apart to do His will and serve Him.
v 18. While this was specifically to the eleven, Jesus was the model for all who are in the world but not of the world, and with a mission to perform for the Lord.
v 19. Of course Jesus was already sanctified, but He is now to be specifically set apart by His death, so that we may be truly set apart to serve Him.
v 20. In 20-26 Jesus is praying for Christians through the whole age. This is the message passed from the apostles to others as commanded, 2 Tim. 2:2.
v 21-23. Request 6, For the spiritual unity of believers. Believers are one body in Christ and should have a spiritual unity in love, obedience and commitment. There should not be schism in the Church. This does not refer to an Ecumenical, union where doctrine is compromised, which leads to the Satanical one world church. The Son and Father are one, and we are indwelt by Him. the goal of this unity is Request 5, That the world may believe, v 21
v 24. Request 7, That believers may be with Him in heaven to behold and share His glory. The fellowship the disciples had with Jesus will be nothing to that in heaven. Jesus had this kind of relationship with the Father before the world was created.  If we doubt our eternal security we are doubting that God will answer Christ’s request.
v 25,26. The Righteous Father is in contrast to the world which does not know Him. Jesus knew, revealed and glorified the Father and made His love known to the world by His death. The Father made His love for the Son known by raising Him to glory. Jesus’ purpose in revealing this was so that believers could have that same love for one another as with the Father and Son. We know the requests underlined will be answered, because Jesus was praying in the Father’s perfect will.  This illustrates we are in Christ, He in God, and

I have seen 17:21 illustrated by two circles side by side. One large circle is labeled “God”, has a smaller circle in it, “Christ”, and a still smaller one in the center labeled Christians, showing they in Us and I in Thee, v 21. The other it is reversed with the center circle being God, the next one Christ and the outer one Christians, showing Thou in Me and I in them, v 23.

Another illustration of chapter 17 is a large circle divided in eight equal parts.
