1 AFTER these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.
3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judæa, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.
6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.
9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.
13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
14 ¶ Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
20 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?
24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
26 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
31 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.
35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
36 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
43 So there was a division among the people because of him.
44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

12And there was much murmuring among the people, concerning him: For some said, Hee is a good man: Others said, Nay, but he deceiueth the people.

13Howbeit, no man spake openly of him, for feare of the Iewes.

14 Now about the middest of the feast, Iesus went vp into the Temple, and taught.

15And the Iewes marueiled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, hauing neuer learned?

16Iesus answered them, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

17If any man will doe his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speake of my selfe.

18He that speaketh of himselfe, seeketh his owne glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no vnrighteousnesse is in him.

19Did not Moses giue you the Law, and yet none of you keepeth the Law? Why goe ye about to kill me?

20The people answered, and sayd, Thou hast a deuill: Who goeth about to kill thee?

21Iesus answered, and saide vnto them, I haue done one worke, and yee all marueile.

22Moses therefore gaue vnto you Circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers) and yee on the Sabbath day circumcise a man.

23If a man on the Sabbath day receiue circumcision, that the Lawe of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I haue made a man euery whit whole on the Sabbath day?

24Iudge not according to the appearance, but iudge righteous iudgement.

25Then said some of them of Hierusalem, Is not this hee, whome they seeke to kill?

26But loe, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing vnto him: Doe the rulers know indeede that this is the very Christ?

27Howbeit wee know this man whence he is: but when Christ commeth, no man knoweth whence he is.

28Then cried Iesus in the Temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am, and I am not come of my selfe, but he that sent me, is true, whom ye know not.

29But I know him, for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

30Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his houre was not yet come.

31And many of the people beleeued on him, & said, When Christ commeth, will hee doe moe miracles then these which this man hath done?

33Then said Iesus vnto them, Yet a litle while am I with you, and then I goe vnto him that sent me.

34Ye shall seeke me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither yee cannot come.

35Then saide the Iewes among themselues, Whither will hee goe, that we shall not find him? will he goe vnto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

36What maner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seeke me, and shall not find me? and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Iesus stood, and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come vnto me, and drinke.

38He that beleeueth on me, as the Scripture hath saide, out of his belly shall flow riuers of liuing water.

45 Then came the officers to the chiefe Priests and Pharises, and they said vnto them, Why haue ye not brought him?

46The officers answered, Neuer man spake like this man.

47Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceiued?

48Haue any of the rulers, or of the Pharises beleeued on him?

49But this people who knoweth not the Law, are cursed.

50Nicodemus saith vnto them, (He that came to Iesus by night, being one of them,)

51Doth our Law iudge any man before it heare him, & know what he doth?

52They answered, and said vnto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and looke: for out of Galilee ariseth no Prophet.

53And euery man went vnto his owne house.

Some said, "He is a good man," (while) others said, "No; on the contrary, he misleads the crowd." 13 Still, no one spoke openly about him because they were afraid of the Jews. 14 When the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple area and began to teach. 15 The Jews were amazed and said, "How does he know scripture without having studied?" 16 Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not my own but is from the one who sent me. 17 Whoever chooses to do his will shall know whether my teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of the one who sent him is truthful, and there is no wrong in him. 19 Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" 20 The crowd answered, "You are possessed! Who is trying to kill you?" 21 Jesus answered and said to them, "I performed one work and all of you are amazed 22 because of it. Moses gave you circumcision - not that it came from Moses but rather from the patriarchs - and you circumcise a man on the sabbath. 23 If a man can receive circumcision on a sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole person well on a sabbath? 24 Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly." 25 So some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said, "Is he not the one they are trying to kill? 26 And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him. Could the authorities have realized that he is the Messiah? 27 But we know where he is from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from." 28 So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said, "You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. 29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me." 30 So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 But many of the crowd began to believe in him, and said, "When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man has done?" 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring about him to this effect, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent guards to arrest him. 33 So Jesus said, "I will be with you only a little while longer, and then I will go to the one who sent me. 34 You will look for me but not find (me), and where I am you cannot come." 35 So the Jews said to one another, "Where is he going that we will not find him? Surely he is not going to the dispersion among the Greeks to teach the Greeks, is he? 36 What is the meaning of his saying, 'You will look for me and not find (me), and where I am you cannot come'?" 37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, "Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: 'Rivers of living water will flow from within him.'" 39 He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. 40 Some in the crowd who heard these words said, "This is truly the Prophet." 41 Others said, "This is the Messiah." But others said, "The Messiah will not come from Galilee, will he? 42 Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?" 43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. 44 Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. 45 So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring him?" 46 The guards answered, "Never before has anyone spoken like this one." 47 So the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? 48 Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed." 50 Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, 51 "Does our law condemn a person before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?" 52 They answered and said to him, "You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee." 53 Then each went to his own house,  

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. It was Passover time, chapter 6 and Feast of Tabernacles, or In gathering in chapter 7, so Jesus stayed in Galilee about six months to avoid those seeking his life. Other Gospels report many things happening from 6:4-7:2. Men were to come to all the feasts if possible, but all came to Tabernacles to set up booths on roof tops or streets. Children  had fun setting up branches etc. and “camping out” for a week.
v 3-5. Jesus’ half brothers probably believed the neighbors that Jesus was born out of wed lock, rather than Mary’s testimony that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit. He was not moving to free the country from Rome and His crowds were falling off since He said people should eat His flesh and drink His blood. His brothers thought if He wanted to convince them and others, He should go to the religious center and perform something spectacular. (In Mk. 3:21, His family and friends thought He was crazy.)
v 6,7. His brothers could come and go as they chose because they weren’t hated as He was. He was bound by the Father’s timing. It was not yet, v 6, 8. 30; 8:20. Hours before the cross He said in prayer the time had come, 17:1. See also 12:23, 27; 13:1. 
v 8-10. Jesus wasn’t going yet, but after some duties performed, went up covertly. 
v 11-13. While Jesus delayed appearing, people debated His merits. The leaders said He deceived the people, which was punishable by stoning. Those who thought He was a good man were afraid to speak up for Him for fear of the leaders.
v 14,15. About the middle of the Feast week, Jesus suddenly appeared, teaching in the temple with spiritual depth, yet  He had not been to schools of higher learning. All children were taught in the Synagogue until twelve, some then seminary training.
v 16, 17. Though Jesus may have had better than normal training in the home and the synagogue, He was not school taught or self taught but God taught. To know and understand His teaching, one must have faith and seek to do God’s will.
v 18. Jesus taught what God taught Him, He taught truly and glorified God.
v 19. They proclaimed Moses law outwardly but did not have it in their hearts, so they were contemplating murdering Jesus.
v 20. They denied it and were convicted of sin, but rather than repent, accused Him of being demon possessed, just like they did John the Baptist, Matt. 11:18.
v 21-23. They had wanted to kill Jesus for healing the paralytic at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath the last time He was there. Circumcision predated Moses, but he commanded it to be done on the eight day even if it was the Sabbath. Jesus pointed out that it would be just as right to heal a person on the Sabbath.
v 24. They needed to judge righteously, not interpret the law superficially.
v 25,26. Local people knew of the plot to kill Jesus, so when He spoke boldly and was not apprehended, they wondered if the leaders had begun to think He was Christ.
v 27. People assumed Jesus to be merely a carpenter from Nazareth.
v 28-30. Jesus knew their disputes and said that much was true, but they didn’t know who sent Him. He came from Him (Father) and knew Him. At this, they did determine to arrest Him, but God restrained them because the time had not yet come.
v 31. Many believed Messiah would not do more miracles, but not saving faith.
v 32. Many were believing Jesus, so the religious leaders sent men to arrest Him.
v 33,34. Only months remained until Jesus would go back to heaven, so He said they would seek Him but not find Him or go to Him. Jews seek Messiah yet today.
v 35,36. The people were perplexed, wondering if they couldn’t go to Him because He was going to some of the Jews scattered throughout the Roman empire.
v 37. The “last day, that great day of the feast” is the last day of In gathering. It is the seventh day of the feast, clarified Ne. 8:18, and people live in booths made of branches, no cloth or hides allowed, during those seven days. The eighth day, is a solemn assembly, and people are not required to live in booths. Thus, contrary to what some think, it is the last day of In gathering, not the eighth day, that Jesus makes this pronouncement.  Many details in Unger’s Bible Dictionary under Festivals.
Perhaps a million people gathered as near as possible to the altar, which was 38 feet square and 15 feet high. Sadducees believed the trees of Lev. 23:40 were for the construction of booths, but the Pharisees believed they were what the worshipers were to carry. Briefly, they believed the “goodly trees” were citron fruit carried in the left hand, and the other trees included myrtle, if it didn’t have many berries, palm and willow, carried in the right hand. These were to be gathered before the feast on the Day of Preparation, and on the seventh day of the feast, children could shake off the fruits to eat them, and beat off the leaves of the other trees.
Reports of how the ceremonies are observed vary, partly because additions were made to the original command of God in Leviticus. However, at the time of Jesus, the order can be certainly stated. Each of the seven days, the priest went to the pool of Siloam (Which gets it’s water from Gihon Spring) and drew water in a golden pitcher. This was not done on the eighth day. Children laughed and sang and followed the priest as he brought the water to the temple. Each day the crowd would become silent, waiting for this drink offering to be poured out. After it was poured out, the people would sing from Isa. 12:3. “With joy shall we draw water from the wells of salvation”.
In this setting, on the seventh day of the feast, you could hear a pin drop as the crowd awaited the pouring out of the drink offering. It was in that silent moment that Christ called out in a loud voice, “If any man thirst, let him come to Me and drink”.
v 38,39. Jesus continued his explanation of the pouring out of water as the pouring out of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and how the Spirit would continuously flow out  of our innermost being. Rom. 5:5, the love of God being shed abroad from our hearts by the Holy Spirit. We that drink from Jesus become a fountain to others. The new birth is Christ coming into our lives and we become a new creation. It is a new life, and the “rivers” indicate an abundant life, but sometimes it takes trials to bring it out.
v 40-44. Jesus’ proclamation caused some to think He was the prophet Moses spoke of, not realizing Moses spoke of Messiah. Some thought He was Messiah, but others that Christ wouldn’t come out of Galilee. They knew from 2 Sam. 7:16 and Isa. 11:1 that He was to be from David’s family, and Micah 5:2 that He was to come from Bethlehem, but ignored that truth entirely. Since the crowd was divided and His claims to being Messiah sounded credible, the officers of v 32 thought best not to arrest Him.
v 45,46. Their excuse for not was that a mere man could not talk like that.
v 47-49. The Pharisees boasted they hadn’t believed Jesus, so these men were deceived and the rabble didn’t understand the Law so were under God’s curse. Actually it was the Pharisees who were cursed because they didn’t believe.
v 50,51. Nicodemus had come to Jesus at night and knew He had come from God, so he reminded them of the Rabbinic Law that accused were to get a fair hearing.
v 52. The Pharisees and rulers ridiculed Nicodemus as being a Galilean if he believed that a Messianic prophet would come out of Galilee. Then dispersed. Some coming from Galilee were Jonah, Hosea, Nahum, perhaps Elijah, Elisha & Amos.
The Bodman Papyrus, 200 AD quotes them as saying “The” Prophet does not come out of Galilee.
v 53. This verse is not in some ancient manuscripts, see comments on 8:1.
