KING JAMES BIBLE

1 AND as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?
11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.
12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.
29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

KING JAMES 1611

1And as Iesus passed by, he saw a man which was blinde from his birth.

2And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sinne, this man, or his parents, that he was borne blinde?

3Iesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the workes of God should be made manifest in him.

4I must worke the workes of him that sent me, while it is day: the night commeth when no man can worke.

5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

6When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spettle, and he anointed the eyes of the blinde man with the clay,

7And said vnto him, Goe wash in the poole of Siloam (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therfore, and washed, and came seeing.

8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seene him, that he was blinde, said, Is not this he that sate and begged?

9Some said, This is hee: others said, Hee is like him: but hee sayd, I am hee.

10Therefore said they vnto him, How were thine eyes opened?

11He answered and said, A man that is called Iesus, made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said vnto me, Goe to the poole of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I receiued sight.

12Then said they vnto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

14And it was the Sabbath day when Iesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15Then againe the Pharisees also asked him how he had receiued his sight. He said vnto them, Hee put clay vpon mine eyes, and I washed, and doe see.

16Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because hee keepeth not the Sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner, doe such miracles? and there was a diuision among them.

17They say vnto the blind man againe, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, Hee is a Prophet.

18But the Iewes did not beleeue concerning him, that hee had bin blind, and receiued his sight, vntill they called the parents of him that had receiued his sight.

19And they asked them, saying, Is this your sonne, who ye say was borne blind? how then doth he now see?

20His parents answered them, and said, We know that this is our sonne, and that he was borne blind:

21But by what meanes he now seeth, we know not, or who hath opened his eyes we know not: hee is of age, aske him, he shall speake for himselfe.

22These words spake his parents, because they feared the Iewes: for the Iewes had agreed already, that if any man did confesse that he was Christ, he should be put out of the Synagogue.

23Therefore said his parents, He is of age, aske him.

24Then againe called they the man that was blind, and said vnto him, Giue God the praise, we know that this man is a sinner.

25He answered, and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: One thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.

26Then saide they to him againe, What did he to thee? How opened hee thine eyes?

27He answered them, I haue told you already, and ye did not heare: wherfore would you heare it againe? Will ye also be his disciples?

28Then they reuiled him, and said, Thou art his disciple, but we are Moses disciples.

29Wee know that God spake vnto Moses: as for this fellow, we knowe not from whence he is.

30The man answered, and said vnto them, Why herein is a marueilous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

31Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man bee a worshipper of God, and doth his will, him he heareth.

32Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was borne blinde:

33If this man were not of God, he could doe nothing.

34They answered, and saide vnto him, Thou wast altogether borne in sinnes, and doest thou teach vs? And they cast him out.

35Iesus heard that they had cast him out; and when hee had found him, he said vnto him, Doest thou beleeue on the Sonne of God?

36He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might beleeue on him?

37And Iesus said vnto him, Thou hast both seene him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

38And he said, Lord, I beleeue: and he worshipped him.

39 And Iesus said, For iudgment I am come into this world, that they which see not, might see, and that they which see, might be made blind.

40And some of the Pharisees which were with him, heard these words, and saide vnto him, Are wee blinde also?

41Iesus saide vnto them, If yee were blind, ye should haue no sinne: but now ye say, We see, therfore your sinne remaineth.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 As he passed by he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 Jesus answered, "Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him. 4 We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." 6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, 7 and said to him, "Go wash in the Pool of Siloam" (which means Sent). So he went and washed, and came back able to see. 8 His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said, "Isn't this the one who used to sit and beg?" 9 Some said, "It is," but others said, "No, he just looks like him." He said, "I am." 10 So they said to him, "(So) how were your eyes opened?" 11 He replied, "The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went there and washed and was able to see." 12 And they said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I don't know." 13 They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath. 15 So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see." 16 So some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath." (But) others said, "How can a sinful man do such signs?" And there was a division among them. 17 So they said to the blind man again, "What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet." 18 Now the Jews did not believe that he had been blind and gained his sight until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his sight. 19 They asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How does he now see?" 20 His parents answered and said, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 We do not know how he sees now, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him, he is of age; he can speak for him self." 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as the Messiah, he would be expelled from the synagogue. 23 For this reason his parents said, "He is of age; question him." 24 So a second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, "Give God the praise! We know that this man is a sinner." 25 He replied, "If he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see." 26 So they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" 27 He answered them, "I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?" 28 They ridiculed him and said, "You are that man's disciple; we are disciples of Moses! 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this one is from." 30 The man answered and said to them, "This is what is so amazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him. 32 It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything." 34 They answered and said to him, "You were born totally in sin, and are you trying to teach us?" Then they threw him out. 35 When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" 36 He answered and said, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" 37 Jesus said to him, "You have seen him and the one speaking with you is he." 38 He said, "I do believe, Lord," and he worshiped him. 39 Then Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind." 40 Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said to him, "Surely we are not also blind, are we?" 41 Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, 'We see,' so your sin remains.

COMMENTARIE

Notice the progression of this man’s faith, from “a man called Jesus”, v 11; Prophet v 17; Worshiper of God doing His will, v 31; He worshiped Him, 38.
v 1. Jesus had apparently just proclaimed Himself the “Light of the World”, chose to give light to this man, blind from birth, to illustrate our spiritual blindness from birth.
v 2,3. All have sinned, but the blindness was not from anyone’s specific sin. This was to manifest the work of God through Christ. God allowed, did not make him blind.
v 4,5. Christ’s death would be the limit of the “day” for His work. We do not know what our limit will be, but we are to be His lights after He left, Mt. 5:14, Eph. 5:8.
v 6,7. Making clay and having him wash was to develop his faith.
v 8,9. This miracle was so incredible, he had to confirm he was the same man.
v 10-12. He explained his healing by a man called Jesus, who had gone when he returned.
v 13,14. Do-gooders brought him to the Pharisees as this was done on Sabbath. In their minds making clay on Sabbath and healing on Sabbath were both wrong.
v 15,16. Hearing his explanation, the Pharisees concluded Jesus was not of God or He would not have violated the Sabbath. Others thought a sinner could not heal.
v 17. The man’s faith has increased to believe Jesus is a prophet.
v 18-20. The Pharisees had to have his parents confirm their son was born blind.
v 21-23. The parents knew they would be put out of the synagogue if they claimed Jesus healed him, so they put the responsibility back on him as an adult.
v 24. Pharisees were determined to make the man affirm Jesus was a sinner. They were willing to give God the praise, but not Jesus.
v 25,26. He would only admit to being healed, so they grilled him again on that.
v 27. Tired of grilling, he asked if they wanted to be Jesus’ disciples too.
v 28,29. Angry at his reply, they insult the man and claim knowledge of Moses but not knowing anything about Jesus’ origin.
v 30-33. Showing more perception than the Pharisees, the man declares that this miracle is so unique that Jesus had to be worshiper of  God, because God would not hear a sinner.
v 34. In irrational anger at being upstaged by one they considered a sinner, they expel him from the synagogue. Now he could no longer eat and speak with his family.
v 35. Jesus knew his plight and asked in effect if he believed in Messiah.
v 36,37. He would believe if he knew who He was, so Jesus said He was.
v 38. He believed Jesus was of God, now he believes Him as Lord and worshiped Him.
v 39. This does not contradict 3:17 or 12:47, which speak of condemnation. More people have probably gathered and He is just pronouncing decision as to whether they have been blind and have believed, or through pride are willfully blind, Satan contributing to their blindness, 1 Cor. 4:4.
v 40. The Pharisees can’t imagine themselves, the “spiritual” ones, being blind.
v 41. Those who are spiritually blind but are seeking and receptive to the truth can see. Those who are self righteous and unable to recognize their sin are blind. The Pharisees claimed to possess light but rejected the True Light, so their sin remained.
