1 THESE things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

9Of sinne, because they beleeue not on me.

10Of righteousnesse, because I goe to my Father, and ye see me no more.

11Of iudgement, because the prince of this world is iudged.

12I haue yet many things to say vnto you, but ye cannot beare them now:

13Howbeit, when hee the spirit of trueth is come, he wil guide you into all trueth: For he shall not speake of himselfe: but whatsoeuer he shall heare, that shall he speake, and he will shew you things to come.

16A litle while, and ye shall not see me: and againe a litle while, & ye shall see me: because I goe to the Father.

17Then saide some of his disciples among themselues, What is this that he saith vnto vs, A litle while, and ye shal not see me: and againe, a litle while, and ye shall see me: and, because I goe to the Father?

18They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A litle while? we cannot tell what he saith.

19Now Iesus knew that they were desirous to aske him, & said vnto them, Doe ye enquire among your selues of that I saide, A litle while, and ye shall not see mee: and againe; A little while and ye shall see me?

20Uerily, verily I say vnto you, that ye shall weepe and lament, but the world shall reioyce: And ye shall be sorrowfull, but your sorrow shall be turned into ioy.

21A woman, when she is in trauaile, hath sorrow, because her houre is come: but assoone as she is deliuered of the child, she remembreth no more the anguish, for ioy that a man is borne into the world.

22And ye now therefore haue sorrow: but I will see you againe, and your heart shall reioyce, and your ioy no man taketh from you.

23And in that day ye shall aske me nothing: Uerily, verily I say vnto you, Whatsoeuer yee shall aske the Father in my Name, he will giue it you.

24Hitherto haue ye asked nothing in my Name: aske, and ye shall receiue, that your ioy may be full.

28I came foorth from the Father, and am come into the world: againe, I leaue the world, and goe to the Father.

29His disciples said vnto him, Loe, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no prouerbe.

30Now are we sure that thou knowest al things, and needest not that any man should aske thee: By this we beleeue that thou camest foorth from God.

31Iesus answered them, Doe yee now beleeue?

32Behold, the houre commeth, yea is now come, that ye shall be scattered, euery man to his owne, and shall leaue me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

33These things I haue spoken vnto you, that in me ye might haue peace, in the world ye shall haue tribulation: but be of good cheare, I haue ouercome the world.

He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 16 "A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me." 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, "What does this mean that he is saying to us, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" 18 So they said, "What is this 'little while' (of which he speaks)? We do not know what he means." 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discussing with one another what I said, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'? 20 Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy. 21 When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. 22 So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. 23 On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. 24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. 25 "I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." 29 His disciples said, "Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. 30 Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God." 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you believe now? 32 Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 33 I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world." 

COMMENTARIE

v  1. As part of His last minute instructions, Jesus warns them of things that will happen so they will not stumble and be dismayed when they do happen.
v 2. Believers were mostly Jews at first, and as they increased, putting them out of the synagogue became common. Paul is a good example of thinking they served God.
3,4. Unbelievers, especially religious unbelievers are the strongest persecutors. It was not necessary for them to know these things when Jesus was with them, but now they know, their faith will be strengthened when they remember His words.
v 5,6. Jesus will soon return to the Father in heaven. Peter had in fact begun to ask in 13:36 “Where goest thou?” But it was in the sense of personal loss rather than desire to know in depth what was meant. Thomas only inquired, 14:5, how they could know the way, when they didn’t know where He was going. Others asked not even that much. They were all just in sorrow that He would not be with them.
v 7. The disciples, like ourselves many times, did not realize what was best for them. All the events of Jesus going away were necessary to bring salvation to us. By His going to send, we now have the Comforter to indwell and intercede for us.
v 8. The Holy Spirit’s ministry will include convicting of sin (unbelief), revealing the true righteousness of God to unsaved, and realization of judgment of Satan from the cross and unbelievers (and believers for unconfessed sin).
v 9. A person on a TV program was being confronted with a certain sin, but rather than state the sin, he or she said, “I guess I was not a nice person.” When the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, people must confess and repent or they can not be saved. The sin is unbelief; The sins are because they don’t believe.
v 10. Jews believed  “Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree”, Gal. 3:13, so they thought Christ was unrighteous and rejected Him. He was accepted by the Father, which proved He was righteous. The centurion admitted, “Truly this was the Son of God”, Mt. 27:54. The Holy Spirit brings others to that recognition.
v 11. Satan is still active but he was defeated when he sent an innocent Christ to the cross. His judgment is future, and the Holy Spirit can make others aware to choose judgment to come or choose salvation.
v 12,13. Still wrapped up in their hopes for the kingdom and sorrow over Christ leaving, the disciples could understand no more spiritual truth now. However, after He was gone, the Holy Spirit would teach them truths told to Him by the Father about the Son. He won’t guide contrary to the Word, but guide them all, some to record more of God’s Word,  others even to writing more of God’s revelation to them about the future.
v 14,15. This gives more detail about the unity of the Trinity. Jesus is the revelation of the Father, and the Holy Spirit glorifies the Son by revealing Him to the disciples. He is given “power of attorney” to represent Christ to us. Greek or Hebrew translations give insight at times, but do not take the place of the Holy Spirit revealing the context and understanding. With Holy Spirit, the Bible is it’s own best commentary. The Father possesses all wisdom, Son reveals all wisdom, H S imparts all wisdom.
v 16. Jesus turns from instruction about the Holy Spirit to the immediate future. Among various views, it seems best that in a little while refers to after His resurrection.
v 17,18. If Jesus was leading them toward the garden, the disciples following may have been discussing behind His back what He was talking about that didn’t “fit”. In a short time they wouldn’t see Him, then in a little while they would see Him. Obviously, they would not see Him after His death, but they would see him after His resurrection before He went to the Father. That this is not referring to Christ’s second advent is clear by His choice of the word “see”. For them not to see “theoreo” in it’s context meant they would not perceive Him with their eyes. But when they would see Him, “optanomai or optomai”, both come from “horao” which can mean to see with the mind, to perceive, know. He is saying after His resurrection they will see with understanding.
v 19,20. Knowing their curiosity, Jesus did not go into detail, but His words meant that they would be in great sorrow over His death. On the other hand, the world, His critics, would be happy thinking they were rid of Him. His resurrection filled disciples with joy, just as His ascension and promised return fills believers with joy. The “world” still hates Him, while Muslims and other unbelievers hate believers, 14:18.
v 21,22. Jesus used a woman in childbirth to illustrate that their sorrow was temporary, and the joy that would follow would far surpass it, 1 Pet. 1:6, 11.
v 23,24. After Christ left they could no longer ask Him personally, but the Holy Spirit would help them, v 13-15. As ministers or ambassador of the Lord, they can go directly to the Father with their needs. As said in 14:14,  asking in Jesus’ name is not a magic formula, but means asking in belief and in the authority of Christ. Things asked in His will  are answered, as He and the Father are united in purpose. Answered prayer brings great joy, as we see the fulfilling of God’s plans, promises and His love.
v 25. For three years the Master teacher had taught by example, words, and proverbs, but their concept of  a conquering Messiah was so ingrained that they failed to understand. After His resurrection they would be able to understand plain speech, and after the ascension, the Holy Spirit would remind them of past teaching.
v 26,27. Jesus will still intercede for them, and us, but when Jesus is gone, they will have an intimate relationship which allows them to go directly to the Father. Paul shows this relationship in a Roman son has access to his father, Gal. 3:1-7. 
v 28. What Jesus had been teaching three years is summarized in this verse. His incarnation, life on earth, and now death, resurrection and ascension back to God.
v 29,30, The disciples think they fully understand, but they have only recognized that Jesus knows all things and that He came from God.
v 31,32. Jesus knows they do not yet really believe. Consider all their lack of belief, even when He appeared to them after His resurrection. Zech. 13:7 prophesied how they would be scattered, and along with Peter’s denials this took place only hours later. Jesus was not alone except when God turned from Him at the cross, Mt. 27:46.
v 33. Had they fully understood and taken Jesus final instructions to heart, they could have had peace in the trying hours and days ahead. Later they, and we, can have peace in a troubled world, knowing that Christ has overcome the world, Satan’s sphere of operation. Christ was victorious over death, and we in Him, 1 Cor. 15:54-57. We live in a world of tribulation which may become dramatically worse in our lifetime, but believers, even under persecution and martyrdom, know they have overcome.
