1 LET not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.
25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

12Uerely, verely I say vnto you, he that beleeueth on me, the works that I doe, shall hee doe also, and greater workes then these shall he doe, because I goe vnto my Father.
13And whatsoeuer ye shall aske in my Name, that will I doe, that the Father may be glorified in the Sonne.
14If ye shall aske any thing in my Name, I will doe it.

No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him." 8 Philip said to him, "Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it. 15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, 17 the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him." 22 Judas, not the Iscariot, said to him, "Master, (then) what happened that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?" 23 Jesus answered and said to him, "Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. 25 "I have told you this while I am with you. 26 The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name - he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. 28 You heard me tell you, 'I am going away and I will come back to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. 30 I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me, 31 but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do just as the Father has commanded me. Get up, let us go.
v 1. During the course of this evening Jesus had given the disciples some very heavy things to consider. He would die and go away, several times he mentioned that one of them was a traitor, Peter would disown Him three times, Satan was working against them, and they would all fall away. They would have been leaving the supper about now, but Jesus sat back and gave comfort to their troubled hearts. It was not just a comment, but a command to believe both the heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. If our hearts are troubled, it is because we allow them to be. Philippians 4:8
v 2-4. They need not fear death, because Christ was going away to prepare a place for them, and He had been telling them how to get there. While we know the mansions will be wonderful, the word mansion is not a description. It merely means a permanent dwelling place, not a tent. Description is in such Books as Revelation. He is not referring to His resurrection or coming in glory, but coming for us at the Rapture. An outline of v 3 might be: I - a person; Will - shows His power; Come - a promise; Place - prepared place; Receive you - His people; Be - with Him forever.
v 5,6. Like Peter in 13:36 they still did not understand His going away. His death and resurrection and the coming of the Spirit opened their minds. Thomas thought in terms of a set of instructions, not a person. Jesus is the Way to the Father, because they are both Truth and Life. Truth can be relied upon, life is what He gives. There is no other way, not penance, good works, trying to keep commandments, even reverence for God or saints. Even heathen who worship the “Great Spirit” must come through Christ. This sounds harsh, but various times heathen have begged to know God, and He has sent a missionary to present Christ and the Gospel.
v 7. This is somewhat a rebuke, but after the resurrection they will understand.
v 8,9. Philip was probably looking for a visible presence of the Father, as Moses asked in Ex. 33:18. Jesus shows disappointment, but patience as He points out that if he had seen Jesus, he had seen the Father.
v 10,11. Proof of this is 1, He was in the Father and the Father in Him. Showed by His character; 2, The words He spoke were not His own but the Father’s. No man spake like this man; 3, The miracles He did were the Father working through Him. They should believe because of the evidence of miracles.
v 12. They would do greater things, possibly by some being healed when the shadow of Peter passed over them or not being harmed by poison or snakes, but the main thing is in outreach. By the power of the Holy Spirit they would reach many more for the Lord (3000 at Pentecost).
v 13,14. Asking in His name is not a magic formula, but means asking in belief and in the authority of Christ. Like a blank check for our needs that we responsibly ask in His will. Answered prayer glorifies the Father. It is important to ask. As in following verses,we must obey His commands.
v 15. Christ set the pattern for obedience, and we are to willingly obey Him.
v 16,17. Christ would soon leave them, but in a few weeks they would receive and be permanently indwelt by the Holy Spirit, as we are when we are born again. Until now the Holy Spirit had helped them in miracles just as He came upon OT believers at times. The word for Comforter, Paraclete, means one of the same type who comes along side to help.
v 18,19. Though Christ was leaving, He would come to them in the Holy Spirit, and though the world couldn’t see Him, we will recognize His presence, we in Him, He in us. Jesus lived as conqueror over death, so we shall not be held by the grave either.
v 20,21. “That day” is the day of Pentecost when all believers will experience the unity of Christ, the Father and the believer. To love Christ is to care enough about Him to keep His commandments, and when we do, He and the Father love us.
v 22. Judas, also known as Jude or Thaddaeus, probably had the last name Lebbaeus. He wondered why Jesus would be manifest to them but not to the world.
v 23,24. To rebel against God’s word is to rebel against God, so God will not manifest Himself to unbelievers, those who are disobedient to His word. The Father and Christ will abide in those who express their love for them by obedience. Things of God are foolishness to the world, but He manifests Himself to us by abiding in us.
v 25,26. Jesus makes it clear that the Comforter is the Holy Spirit. Before disciples could understand all Jesus had taught, 1, He had to die; 2, He had to arise; 3. The Comforter had to come. He would give them understanding and remind of the truths. He teaches us, helps us understand Scripture, but we must read it to be reminded of it.
v 27. Still concerned for their troubled minds, Jesus gives a farewell that in His death He gives a peace that since their sins were forgiven they could trust Him and need not fear death. It is not simply no war, but peace in the midst of turmoil. v 1-27 is sort of a parenthesis of comfort being given.
v 28. If they had a greater love for Christ instead of arguing among themselves who was greatest, they would have rejoiced to see Him go away, fulfilling Scripture. The Father and Son are one and equal in essence and purpose, but only in His humiliation was Christ less than the Father in His glory.
v 29-31. Fulfilled prophecy increases faith, and knowing the things about Christ’s death etc. would strengthen their faith after they came to pass. Time is running out for Jesus to talk to them, because Satan had already inspired Judas to begin the process for the arrest and things to follow. Jesus was not subject to Satan in this, but He was subject to the Father’s will. Satan thought he was winning, but he was defeated. Jesus’ love is shown as He said in the next chapter, John 15:13, Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Some take the words “Arise, let us go hence”, were meant more as a pep talk, with the idea that they needed to work together on these things He is teaching. If they began to arise to leave, He merely motioned them to be seated and continued to teach from the upper room, then in 18:1 they left and began the walk to brook Kedron.
Others take the words, “Arise, let us go hence”, to mean they immediately left the room and started for the garden, Jesus stopping along the way every so often to tell them the rest of the things in chapters 15 through 17. The message on the vine and branches may have been emphasized as they passed a small vineyard in the light of the full moon. Then at 18: 1, discussion is over and they pass over the brook Kedron. It really makes no difference and can not be proven, but after studying it over,
