1 JESUS went unto the mount of Olives.
2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47 He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by

21Then saide Iesus againe vnto them, I goe my way, and ye shall seeke me, & shall die in your sinnes: Whither I goe, ye cannot come.

22Then said the Iewes, Will hee kill himselfe? because he saith, Whither I goe, ye cannot come.

23And hee said vnto them, Yee are from beneath, I am from aboue: Yee are of this world, I am not of this world.

24I said therefore vnto you, that ye shall die in your sinnes. For if yee beleeue not that I am hee, yee shall die in your sinnes.

25Then said they vnto him, Who art thou? And Iesus saith vnto them, Euen the same that I saide vnto you from the beginning.

26I haue many things to say, and to iudge of you: But hee that sent mee is true, and I speake to the world, those things which I haue heard of him.

27They vnderstood not that hee spake to them of the Father.

28Then saide Iesus vnto them, When yee haue lift vp the Sonne of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I doe nothing of my selfe: but as my Father hath taught mee, I speake these things.

29And he that sent me, is with me: the Father hath not left mee alone: for I doe alwayes those things that please him.

30As hee spake those words, many beleeued on him.

31Then said Iesus to those Iewes which beleeued on him, If ye continue in my word, then are yee my disciples indeed.

32And ye shall know the Trueth, and the Trueth shall make you free.

33 They answered him, We be Abraham seed, and were neuer in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Yee shall be made free?

34Iesus answered them, Uerily, verily I say vnto you, Whosoeuer committeth sinne, is the seruant of sinne.

35And the seruant abideth not in the house for euer: but the Sonne abideth euer.

36If the Sonne therfore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37I know that yee are Abrahams seed, but ye seeke to kill mee, because my word hath no place in you.

38I speake that which I haue seene with my Father: and ye do that which ye haue seene with your father.

39They answered, and said vnto him, Abraham is our father. Iesus sayth vnto them, If yee were Abrahams children, ye would doe the works of Abraham.

40But now yee seeke to kill me, a man that hath tolde you the trueth, which I haue heard of God: this did not Abraham.

41Ye doe the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not borne of fornication, wee haue one Father, euen God.

42Iesus said vnto them, If God were your Father, yee would loue me, for I proceeded foorth, and came from God: neither came I of my selfe, but he sent me.

43Why doe yee not vnderstand my speech? euen because yee cannot heare my word.

44Ye are of your father the deuill, and the lusts of your father ye will doe: hee was a murtherer from the beginning, and abode not in the trueth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his owne: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45And because I tell you the truth, ye beleeue me not.

46Which of you conuinceth mee of sinne? And if I say the trueth, why doe ye not beleeue me?

47He that is of God, heareth Gods words: ye therefore heare them not, because ye are not of God.

48Then answered the Iewes, and said vnto him, Say wee not well that thou art a Samaritane, & hast a deuill?

49Iesus answered, I haue not a deuill: but I honour my Father, and ye doe dishonour me.

50And I seeke not mine owne glory, there is one that seeketh & iudgeth.

51Uerely, verely I say vnto you, If a man keepe my saying, hee shall neuer see death.

52Then said the Iewes vnto him, Now we know that thou hast a deuill. Abraham is dead, and the Prophets: and thou sayest, If a man keepe my saying, he shall neuer taste of death.

53Art thou greater then our father Abraham, which is dead? and the Prophets are dead: whom makest thou thy selfe?

54Iesus answered, If I honour myselfe, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me, of whom ye say, that he is your God:

55Yet ye haue not knowen him, but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shalbe a lyar like vnto you: but I know him, and keepe his saying.

56Your father Abraham reioyced to see my day: and he saw it, & was glad.

57Then said the Iewes vnto him, Thou art not yet fiftie yeeres olde, and hast thou seene Abraham?

58Iesus said vnto them, Uerely, verely I say vnto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59Then tooke they vp stones to cast at him: but Iesus hidde himselfe, and went out of the Temple, going thorow the midst of them, and so passed by.

So what do you say?" 6 They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. 7 But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." 8 Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9 And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. 10 Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11 She replied, "No one, sir." Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, (and) from now on do not sin any more." 12 Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." 13 So the Pharisees said to him, "You testify on your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified." 14 Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony can be verified, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge by appearances, but I do not judge anyone. 16 And even if I should judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Father who sent me. 17 Even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men can be verified. 18 I testify on my behalf and so does the Father who sent me." 19 So they said to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." 20 He spoke these words while teaching in the treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. 21 He said to them again, "I am going away and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come." 22 So the Jews said, "He is not going to kill himself, is he, because he said, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?" 23 He said to them, "You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world. 24 That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins." 25 So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world." 27 They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father. 28 So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him." 30 Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him. 31 Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33 They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?" 34 Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. 36 So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free. 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me, because my word has no room among you. 38 I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence; then do what you have heard from the Father." 39 They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. 40 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this. 41 You are doing the works of your father!" (So) they said to him, "We are not illegitimate. We have one Father, God." 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I am saying? Because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Can any of you charge me with sin? If I am telling the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not listen, because you do not belong to God." 48 The Jews answered and said to him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed?" 49 Jesus answered, "I am not possessed; I honor my Father, but you dishonor me. 50 I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and he is the one who judges. 51 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death." 52 (So) the Jews said to him, "Now we are sure that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, 'Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.' 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? Or the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?" 54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.' 55 You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word. 56 Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad. 57 So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?" 58 Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM." 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area

It is well established that verses 7:53-8:11 were not in the original text, but they can be considered part of true oral tradition which a copyist added later. This account led to the conversation developed in verse 12 and is appropriately listed here, and should be accepted as a genuine part of the gospel. Perhaps it is one of the things John considered too numerous to mention, 21:25. Mary probably told him many more.
v 1-5. After spending the night at the Mt of Olives, Jesus returned early and sat, as custom, to continue teaching. This was an obvious set up, to catch the woman in the act but not bring in the man also. If Jesus did not pass judgment, He would violate the law of Moses. If he did, He would be accused of not practicing compassion.
Espoused virgins were usually stoned as in case of Mary and Joseph.
v 6-9. It is improper to suggest Jesus wrote a particular portion of Scripture or that he listed sins or names. Whether or not he was “doodling”, he was showing aversion to being involved in this farce. Challenged about their hypocrisy, not any particular sin, the older ones were first to be conscience stricken and left, then the others did. (Not that they had to be sinless to cast stones, but their hypocrisy here was a great sin.)
v 10,11. With no accusers, charges are dropped. Jesus did not condone the sin of the woman, but cautioned her to discontinue sinful living.
v 12. Jesus continues teaching the others. This is apparently day after the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, 7:37, or the eighth day which is added. People are still camping in booths and candelabra are still lighted in the court of the women. Tents to remind of tents when they left Egypt, candelabra reminds of the glory of the Lord which led them. Jesus used this setting to proclaim Himself as the light of the world, the True Light. Following Him meant salvation and to walk in darkness was to remain in sin.
Light casts out darkness. Show, a flashlight brightens dark corner but blinds eyes. Light increased the blindness of Pharisees. Unbelievers who reject the light grow darker. Moon reflects sun light to earth, and we should reflect Christ’s light to others.
v 13-16.  At another feast, 5:1, after healing the man at the pool of Bethesda, Jesus had given four other witnesses to His authority. This may be a year or more later, so He states His witness is true. They improperly judge Him because of limited knowledge, but at this point He is not to judge but save men. However His witness is true,  because He knows He came from the Father who sent Him. Will judge in future.
v 17-19. To satisfy the demand for two witnesses, Jesus presents the Father. They lacked spiritual understanding that He was speaking about the Father in heaven. We can only know the Father through Christ.  “....but by me.” Jn. 14:6.
v 20. Treasury is in the Court of the women where the widow cast her mites, Mk. 12:41. Deity was implied, but they couldn’t seize Him because it wasn’t yet time.
v 21. When Jesus returned to the Father, they would die in sin of rejecting Him.
v 22. In 7:35 they thought he would go far away, but here think He will kill himself.
v 23,24. Without calling Himself Messiah, they will die if they do not believe Him.
v 25-27. Angry at charge of their sins, they protest who Jesus is. He has told them all along, but they refuse to believe He came from the Father. They did not understand He came from the Father, and to tell them more only increased their condemnation.
v 28. This is the closest to a public announcement of His crucifixion. Then some would believe His claims, and recognize Him as the Son of God, Mt. 27:54.
v 29,30 Some finally did believe He was the Son doing the will of the Father. The only time the Father turned from Jesus was when He was bearing our sin on the cross.
v 31,32. Continuing to follow Jesus would prove heart belief and freed from sin.
v 33. They were not personal slaves and ignored present bondage to Rome and previous captivities. They felt being descendants of Abraham was sufficient for their acceptance before God.
v 34-36. Practicing sin makes us servants of sin, but as Ishmael was cast out and Isaac remained, Christ is God’s Son and we can have true freedom in Him.
v 37. Not being spiritual seed of Abraham was shown by seeking to kill Christ.
v 38. Jesus spoke of the Father, but they obeyed their father, Identified in v. 44.
v 39,40. John had warned them not to rely on relationship to Abraham, Lk. 3:8. Jesus says they are not spiritual seed of Abraham or they would not seek to kill Him.
v 41. The Jews may have cast a slur at Jesus birth when they claimed they were not illegitimate. Being descended from Abraham was sufficient in their minds.
v 42,43. Simply, if God was their father they would love Jesus. They cannot understand Him because these things are spiritually discerned, 1 Cor. 2:14.
v 44. Jesus plainly states their father is the devil, as also unbelievers today, 1 Jn. 3:8-10. Satan’s entire contact with man has been as a murderer, liar and deceiver.
v 45-47. In contrast, Jesus speaks truth and no sin can be found in Him. Not to heed His word is proof they are not of God.
v 48. Whom they could not refute, they libeled as an evil Samaritan and demonic.
v 49-51. Jesus was not demonic, but was dishonored as was the Father whom Jesus sought to glorify. Belief that brings obedience to Christ gives eternal life.
v 52, 53. They took Him to mean physical death and He was demonic to think Abraham didn’t die. Had they only known, of course He was greater than Abraham.
v 54,55. In contrast to them, Jesus did know and obeyed God. God honored Him.
v 56. Abraham did rejoice to see Jesus in theophanies, (the·oph·a·nies: an appearance of a god to a human; a divine manifestation)

Gen. 18. He may have seen Him symbolically when he was preparing to offer Isaac. Abraham also looked for eternal blessings, a city whose builder and maker is God, Heb. 11:10.
v 57. Unbelievers with no spiritual understanding, could see no possibility of Abraham and Jesus ever being in contact.
v 58. Twenty five times in the book of John and three in this chapter, Jesus used the words “verily verily”, meaning “truly”. He affirms He is the I Am of Ex. 3:14. This can literally mean in original, “before Abraham was brought into being, I exist”.
59. The Jews well knew that by that statement Jesus made himself equal to God. Rather than accept His word and all the witnesses to this in 5:33-39, they again took up stones to kill Him for blasphemy. The wording here does not necessarily mean Jesus made Himself invisible by supernatural means. It can simply mean that He slipped away from them. Amplified, “by mixing with the crowd concealed Himself” It can not be known for sure which.
