1 NOW before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.
25 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.
28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.
30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.
37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

1Now before the feast of the Passeouer, when Iesus knew that his houre was come, that he should depart out of this world vnto the Father, hauing loued his owne which were in the world, he loued them vnto the end.

2And supper being ended (the deuill hauing now put into the heart of Iudas Iscariot Simons sonne to betray him.)

3Iesus knowing that the Father had giuen all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God:

4He riseth from supper, and layed aside his garments, and tooke a towell, and girded himselfe.

5After that, he powreth water into a bason, and beganne to wash the disciples feete, and to wipe them with the towell wherewith he was girded.

6Then commeth he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith vnto him, Lord, doest thou wash my feete?

7Iesus answered, and said vnto him, What I doe, thou knowest not now: but thou shalt know heereafter.

8Peter saith vnto him, Thou shalt neuer wash my feete. Iesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

9Simon Peter saith vnto him, Lord, not my feete only, but also my hands, and my head.

10Iesus saith to him, He that is washed, needeth not, saue to wash his feet, but is cleane euery whit: and ye are cleane, but not all.

11For he knew who should betray him, therefore said he, Ye are not all cleane.

12So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set downe againe, he said vnto them, Know ye what I haue done to you?

13Ye call me Master and Lord, and ye say well: for so I am.

14If I then your Lord and Master haue washed your feete, yee also ought to wash one anothers feete.

15For I haue giuen you an example, that yee should doe, as I haue done to you.

16Uerily, verily I say vnto you, the seruant is not greater then his lord, neither he that is sent, greater then hee that sent him.

17If yee know these things, happy are ye if ye doe them.

18 I speake not of you all, I know whom I haue chosen: but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with mee, hath lift vp his heele against me.

19Now I tell you before it come, that when it is come to passe, yee may beleeue that I am he.

20Uerily, verily I say vnto you, he that receiueth whomsoeuer I send, receiueth me: and he that receiueth me, receiueth him that sent me.

28Now no man at the table knew, for what intent he spake this vnto him.

29For some of them thought, because Iudas had the bagge, that Iesus had sayd vnto him, Buy those things that wee haue need of against the feast: or that he should giue some thing to the poore.

30He then hauing receiued the sop, went immediatly out: and it was night.

31 Therefore when hee was gone out, Iesus sayd, Now is the Sonne of man glorified: and God is glorified in him.

32If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorifie him in himselfe, and shall straightway glorifie him.

33Litle children, yet a litle while I am with you. Ye shall seeke mee, and as I said vnto the Iewes, whither I go, ye cannot come: so now I say to you.

34A new commandement I giue vnto you, That yee loue one another, as I haue loued you, that yee also loue one another.

35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if yee haue loue one to another.

36 Simon Peter sayd vnto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Iesus answered him, Whither I goe, thou canst not follow me now: but thou shalt follow me afterwards.

37Peter said vnto him, Lord, why can not I follow thee now? I will lay downe my life for thy sake.

38Iesus answered him, Wilt thou lay downe thy life for my sake? Uerily, verily I say vnto thee, the Cocke shall not crow, til thou hast denied me thrise.

So, during supper, 3 fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, 4 he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later." 8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me." 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well." 10 Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all." 11 For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, "Not all of you are clean." 12 So when he had washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you? 13 You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am. 14 If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. 15 I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. 16 Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it. 18 I am not speaking of all of you. So he dipped the morsel and (took it and) handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot. 27 After he took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly." 28 (Now) none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus had told him, "Buy what we need for the feast," or to give something to the poor. 30 So he took the morsel and left at once. And it was night. 31 When he had left, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 (If God is glorified in him,) God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once. 33 My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, 'Where I go you cannot come,' so now I say it to you. 34 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. 35 This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." 36 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, where are you going?" Jesus answered (him), "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later." 37 Peter said to him, "Master, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." 38 Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times." 

COMMENTARIE

In chapters 13-17 John details more of Jesus instructions to His disciples than in any of the other Gospels. These instructions take place in the night He is arrested.
v 1. Before they sat down to eat the Passover, Jesus knew everything that would take place in the next 24 hours and showed His love for His special disciples.
v .2-4. “During” or “this phase of the supper being ended”, Judas is resolved what he will do, but Satan did not enter him until v 27. In the meantime, Jesus prepared to wash Judas’ feet right along with the others.
v 5. Foot washing needed by wearing sandals on dusty streets. Children washed parents, wives for husbands, servants for guests. There was no servant at this meeting, or he would have washed the disciples feet as the entered. Jesus takes the position of a slave, and the disciples no doubt sat in stunned silence till Jesus got to Peter.
v 6-8. Peter could not accept this reversed role, but Jesus as much as said, “After my resurrection you will understand that unless I wash your sins away by my atoning death, you can have no part with me.” (Jesus was not referring to baptism.)
v 9,10. The idea that if you have had a bath you only need your feet washed is an illustration that after salvation, we only need confession of sin as in 1 Jn. 1:9. Peter had missed the point and others miss the point when they say after infant baptism you only need penance. Jesus meant Judas, when he says not all of them are clean.
v 11. Judas accepted having his feet washed, but still had a dirty heart.
v 12-14. Disciples had been arguing over who was greatest, so Jesus asks if they understood. This was an object lesson to show how they should respect each other.
v 15-17. The example was for humility, not for a church ordinance. A widow did help others in this and other ways, 1 Tim. 5:8, but it was never  practiced by the early church as a part of the Lord’s Table or any other worship service. Happiness in church is when each treats others with humility, but I am not condemning foot washing groups.
v 18,19. Judas would not be one of the happy ones, which Jesus knew before He ever called him, but he had to be called to fulfill Scripture. For those who insist only the “elect” can be saved, it should be pointed out that Judas had every opportunity to call upon Jesus that the others had, and repeatedly, but it was he who refused the call. No one, not even Judas, was elected to be lost. Acts 10:34,35.
v 20. We, like the disciples, are commissioned by God, and whoever accepts the Word from us is accepting Christ. In accepting Christ, they are accepting the Father
v 21. Being Divine, Jesus knew what Judas would do and his spiritual hardness, but being human, He was still deeply agitated that His friendly overtures were ignored. Judas must have shuddered when Jesus said about this time in Mk. 14:21 that it would be good if that man had never been born. It was only minutes after this that Jesus told Judas to leave, and do his task quickly. Even here, Judas had a choice, but he was hardened against the right choice and Satan had entered into him. See also v 10,18.
v 22. No one suspected Judas, nor could they imagine this of one of themselves. We know from Luke 22:38, 49,50 that the disciples had two swords, so there might have been an impulse to deal with the traitor on the spot. However, Lk 22:24-30 inserts that right after the question arose over who would betray Jesus, the disciples again revert to arguing over who would be greatest. Apparently Luke did not give this in chronological order, or else they had soon forgotten the foot washing. Jesus reminded them that the chief would serve, and that he was not among them as one that dined but as one that served. Jesus then promises them reward of eating at His table in the kingdom and sitting on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Judas excepted)
v 23,24. Judas was probably on Jesus’ left and John on his right, where he could lean against Jesus as they reclined on couches with feet behind them. Peter was far enough away that he motioned to John to find out who was the betrayer.
v 25,26. In answer to John’s request, he was told it would be the one to whom Jesus gave the sop. Unnoticed by others, Jesus gave the sop to Judas. Giving the sop was only done as an act of friendship, so when Jesus dipped a piece of bread in the juices and gave it to Judas, He possibly offered another last opportunity to repent.
v 27. What Jesus did in friendship, Judas accepted with hostility for being found out. In Jn. 6:70  Jesus said one of them (Judas) was a devil. After Mary had anointed Jesus, Judas was was angry, not just over losing the money he hoped to steal, but for the rebuke Jesus had given him. Satan entered him to a degree at that time, Lk. 22:3 , and he went directly to the priests to make a deal to turn Jesus over to them. Judas was being Satanically influenced throughout this time, v 2, but here, Satan took final control of him. In telling  Judas to do quickly what he was going to do, Jesus was giving him opportunity to repent quickly or proceed evil. Jesus had to be betrayed to fulfill Scripture, but Judas doing so was own choice.
v 28-30. Judas had so deceived the other disciples that John did not even notice the sop given to him. They just assumed he was fulfilling a task Jesus had given him. He was actually going out into the darkness of sin, darker than the darkest night.
v 31,32. Freed from the tension over Judas, things are now set in motion for the final hours before His death, so Jesus could say He and the Father were glorified. He is looking beyond death to the resurrection and ascension.
v 33. The tender term, little children, is only used once here, but seven times in First John. Jesus again speaks of His departure, both in death and in ascension.
v 34,35. Vital need of love between believers as the love Jesus has for us is a new concept here, but John repeats it numerous times in 1 John. This was not new in the matter of no precedence, but new as representing Christ’s sacrificial love.
v 36-38. As soon as Jesus stopped speaking, Peter questioned where He was going, much as Thomas soon did, 14:5. Peter could not think of a situation where he could not be with Jesus, and being one of those with a sword, he thought he was ready to lay down his life for Jesus. He did not realize the Satanic power which would be against him, Lk. 22:31,32. He was no doubt hurt and stunned by the prediction of denial, and others may even have thought he would be the betrayer. Peter protested that he would deny Christ, and so did the others, Mk. 14:31. Good intentions may fail.
This phase of the supper being ended, other Gospels tell how Jesus changed the order of the feast by instituting what we know as the Lord’s Supper. This was no doubt soon after Judas left. 
The discourses in chapters 14-17 took place after the Lord’s Supper and the singing of the last hymn, as they relaxed before leaving, while Jesus quieted their hearts, Jn. 14:1. Some of it may have been as they walked toward the garden, with Jesus stopping now and then to turn so they could all hear.
