Deuteronomy 06

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 NOW these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:
2 That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:
5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.
9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
10 And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
11 And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
12 Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
13 Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.
14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;
15 (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
16 Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.
17 Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.
18 And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers,
19 To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the Lord hath spoken.
20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?
21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh’s bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:
22 And the Lord shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:
23 And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.
24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.
25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 "These then are the commandments, the statutes and decrees which the LORD, your God, has ordered that you be taught to observe in the land into which you are crossing for conquest,

2 so that you and your son and your grandson may fear the LORD, your God, and keep, throughout the days of your lives, all his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you, and thus have long life.

3 Hear then, Israel, and be careful to observe them, that you may grow and prosper the more, in keeping with the promise of the LORD, the God of your fathers, to give you a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone!

5 Therefore, you shall love the LORD, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.

6 Take to heart these words which I enjoin on you today.

7 Drill them into your children. Speak of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest.

8 Bind them at your wrist as a sign and let them be as a pendant on your forehead.

9 Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.

10 "When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that he would give you, a land with fine, large cities that you did not build,

11 with houses full of goods of all sorts that you did not garner, with cisterns that you did not dig, with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant; and when, therefore, you eat your fill,

12 take care not to forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.

13 The LORD, your God, shall you fear; him shall you serve, and by his name shall you swear.

14 You shall not follow other gods, such as those of the surrounding nations,

15 lest the wrath of the LORD, your God, flare up against you and he destroy you from the face of the land; for the LORD, your God, who is in your midst, is a jealous God.

16 "You shall not put the LORD, your God, to the test, as you did at Massah.

17 But keep the commandments of the LORD, your God, and the ordinances and statutes he has enjoined on you.

18 Do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, that you may, according to his word, prosper, and may enter in and possess the good land which the LORD promised on oath to your fathers,

19 thrusting all your enemies out of your way.

20 "Later on, when your son asks you what these ordinances, statutes and decrees mean which the LORD, our God, has enjoined on you,

21 you shall say to your son, 'We were once slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand

22 and wrought before our eyes signs and wonders, great and dire, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and his whole house.

23 He brought us from there to lead us into the land he promised on oath to our fathers, and to give it to us.

24 Therefore, the LORD commanded us to observe all these statutes in fear of the LORD, our God, that we may always have as prosperous and happy a life as we have today;

25 and our justice before the LORD, our God, is to consist in carefully observing all these commandments he has enjoined on us.'

COMMENTARIE

v 1-5. Moses continues to urge the people to keep all God’s commandments and they would have long life and multiply in the fruitful land. It was firmly fixed in Jewish minds that the Lord God is one Lord, so they reject the teaching of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We don’t understand it, but we know it is true and believe it. Verse 5 sums up the other commands, and was repeated by Jesus, Matt. 22:37, as the first and great commandment.

v 6-9. The people were to have the commands upon their hearts to the extent that they could teach them to their children at any waking moment as a natural part of conversation. Unfortunately, they eventually took the binding literally, instead of a symbol of their teaching and living. They made phylacteries to fasten on their hands and foreheads, along with precise rules as to how they were to be fastened.

v 10-15. Going into a place where the houses were already built, the vineyards in production and the wells dug, it would be easy for them to forget to rely on the Lord and teach his laws. Again they have the stern reminder to avoid idolatry.

v 16-They are reminded not to put the Lord to the test as they did when they demanded water at Horeb and God brought water out of the rock. In the future their children would ask the meaning of the commands and ordinances, and they were to tell them of the great deliverance from Egypt. They are to make their children know that  the Lord brought them into the land to serve Him, and if they do that, He will preserve them and it will be well with them.
