Deuteronomy 07

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 WHEN the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;
2 And when the Lord thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:
3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.
4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.
5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.
6 For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.
7 The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
8 But because the Lord loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
9 Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
10 And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.
11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the Lord thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:
13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.
14 Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.
15 And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.
16 And thou shalt consume all the people which the Lord thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.
17 If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?
18 Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;
19 The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out: so shall the Lord thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.
20 Moreover the Lord thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.
21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the Lord thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.
22 And the Lord thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.
23 But the Lord thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.
24 And he shall deliver their kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before thee, until thou have destroyed them.
25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.
26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

KING JAMES 1611

11Thou shalt therefore keepe the Commandements, and the Statutes, and the Iudgements, which I command thee this day, to doe them.
12 Wherefore it shal come to passe, if ye hearken to these iudgements, and keepe and do them: That the Lord thy God shall keepe vnto thee the Couenant and the Mercy which he sware vnto thy fathers.
13And hee will loue thee, and blesse thee, and multiply thee: Hee will also blesse the fruit of thy wombe, and the fruit of thy land, thy corne, and thy wine, and thine oile, the encrease of thy kine, and the flockes of thy sheepe, in the land which hee sware vnto thy fathers to giue thee.
14Thou shalt bee blessed aboue all people: there shall not bee male or female barren among you or among your cattell.
15And the Lord will take away from thee all sickenesse, and will put none of the euill diseases of Egypt (which thou knowest) vpon thee: but will lay them vpon all them that hate thee.
16And thou shalt consume all the people which the Lord thy God shall deliuer thee: thine eye shall haue no pitie vpon them, neither shalt thou serue their gods, for that will be a snare vnto thee.
17If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are moe then I, howe can I dispossesse them?
18Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember, what the Lord thy God did vnto Pharaoh, and vnto all Egypt,
19The great temptations which thine eyes sawe, and the signes and the wonders, and the mightie hand, and the stretched out arme, whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out: so shall the Lord thy God doe vnto all the people of whom thou art afraid.
20Moreouer, the Lord thy God will send the hornet among them, vntill they that are left and hide themselues from thee, be destroyed.
21Thou shalt not bee affrighted at them: for the Lord thy God is among you, a mightie God, and terrible.
22And the Lord thy God will put out those nations before thee by litle and litle: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beastes of the field increase vpon thee.
23But the Lord thy God shall deliuer them vnto thee, and shall destroy them with a mightie destruction, vntill they be destroyed.
24And he shall deliuer their kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from vnder heauen: There shal no man be able to stand before thee, vntil thou haue destroyed them.
25The grauen images of their gods shall yee burne with fire: thou shalt not desire the siluer or golde that is on them, nor take it vnto thee, lest thou bee snared therein: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.
26Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou bee a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt vtterly detest it, and thou shalt vtterly abhorre it, for it is a cursed thing.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 "When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which you are to enter and occupy, and dislodges great nations before you - the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites: seven nations more numerous and powerful than you -

2 and when the LORD, your God, delivers them up to you and you defeat them, you shall doom them. Make no covenant with them and show them no mercy.

3 You shall not intermarry with them, neither giving your daughters to their sons nor taking their daughters for your sons.

4 For they would turn your sons from following me to serving other gods, and then the wrath of the LORD would flare up against you and quickly destroy you.

5 "But this is how you must deal with them: Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, chop down their sacred poles, and destroy their idols by fire.

6 For you are a people sacred to the LORD, your God; he has chosen you from all the nations on the face of the earth to be a people peculiarly his own.

7 It was not because you are the largest of all nations that the LORD set his heart on you and chose you, for you are really the smallest of all nations.

8 It was because the LORD loved you and because of his fidelity to the oath he had sworn to your fathers, that he brought you out with his strong hand from the place of slavery, and ransomed you from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

9 Understand, then, that the LORD, your God, is God indeed, the faithful God who keeps his merciful covenant down to the thousandth generation toward those who love him and keep his commandments,

10 but who repays with destruction the person who hates him; he does not dally with such a one, but makes him personally pay for it.

11 You shall therefore carefully observe the commandments, the statutes and the decrees which I enjoin on you today.

12 "As your reward for heeding these decrees and observing them carefully, the LORD, your God, will keep with you the merciful covenant which he promised on oath to your fathers.

13 He will love and bless and multiply you; he will bless the fruit of your womb and the produce of your soil, your grain and wine and oil, the issue of your herds and the young of your flocks, in the land which he swore to your fathers he would give you.

14 You will be blessed above all peoples; no man or woman among you shall be childless nor shall your livestock be barren.

15 The LORD will remove all sickness from you; he will not afflict you with any of the malignant diseases that you know from Egypt, but will leave them with all your enemies.

16 "You shall consume all the nations which the LORD, your God, will deliver up to you. You are not to look on them with pity, lest you be ensnared into serving their gods.

17 Perhaps you will say to yourselves, 'These nations are greater than we. How can we dispossess them?'

18 But do not be afraid of them. Rather, call to mind what the LORD, your God, did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt:

19 the great testings which your own eyes have seen, the signs and wonders, his strong hand and outstretched arm with which the LORD, your God, brought you out. The same also will he do to all the nations of whom you are now afraid.

20 Moreover, the LORD, your God, will send hornets among them, until the survivors who have hidden from you are destroyed.

21 Therefore, do not be terrified by them, for the LORD, your God, who is in your midst, is a great and awesome God.

22 He will dislodge these nations before you little by little. You cannot exterminate them all at once, lest the wild beasts become too numerous for you.

23 The LORD, your God, will deliver them up to you and will rout them utterly until they are annihilated.

24 He will deliver their kings into your hand, that you may make their names perish from under the heavens. No man will be able to stand up against you, till you have put an end to them.

25 The images of their gods you shall destroy by fire. Do not covet the silver or gold on them, nor take it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared by it; for it is an abomination to the LORD, your God.

26 You shall not bring any abominable thing into your house, lest you be doomed with it; loathe and abhor it utterly as a thing that is doomed.

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. The seven nations were descendants of Canaan and were larger and more powerful than Israel, but God would defeat them. The command to destroy men women and children sounds cruel, but God was justified in doing so.
a. They deserved to die because they were the most morally depraved on earth.
b. They had no desire to and refused to repent, as Ninevah did for a while. c. Even a child left alive had the potential to pass on their idolatry and immorality along with it’s sexually transmitted diseases.
d. It was actually a blessing for the little children to be killed before they reached the age of accountability for the wickedness.
We should not kill people, but we should be eager to stamp out sin in our lives.

v 3-6. If Israel intermarried with them, they would be pulled down to the same level of degradation as the Canaanites. Believers run that same risk in marrying unbelievers today. All things having to do with the heathen worship was to be destroyed to preserve Israel as a special people unto God.

v 7-11. It was not anything the Israelites had done to be chosen of God, but only that He loved them. We can say the same thing in being chosen for salvation. Since God loved them and kept covenant with them, they should obey Him.

v 12- 19. Again they are promised blessing for obedience to the Lord, fertility, health and freedom from fear. They need only remember the deliverance from Egypt.

v 20-22. Even the enemies who tried to hide from Israel, God would pursue with hornets. (There is a little song, God didn’t drive them out, He just sent hornets among them and made them willing to go.) It was also in God’s wisdom not to drive them out all at once, otherwise wild beasts would have taken over before they became settled.

v 23-26. God promised He would deliver the enemies into their hands until they were destroyed, but they had to be sure they destroyed all idols and any thing of abomination that might draw them away from God. Many of their idols had to do with sexual perversion that would be a snare to Israel. Apparently the silver and gold they were warned about was also on the idols and needed to be destroyed with them.
