Deuteronomy 18

KING JAMES BIBLE

THE priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and his inheritance.
2 Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the Lord is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.
3 And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.
4 The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.
5 For the Lord thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the Lord, him and his sons for ever.
6 And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the Lord shall choose;
7 Then he shall minister in the name of the Lord his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the Lord.
8 They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.
9 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
13 Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God.
14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
16 According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
17 And the Lord said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?
22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

KING JAMES 1611

1 The Priests, the Leuites, and all the tribe of Leui, shall haue no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eate the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and his inheritance.

6 And if a Leuite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he soiourned, and come with all the desire of his minde, vnto the place which the Lord shall choose;

8 They shall haue like portions to eate, beside that which commeth of the sale of his patrimonie.

9 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giueth thee, thou shalt not learne to doe after the abominations of those nations.

10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his sonne, or his daughter to passe thorow the fire, or that vseth diuination, or an obseruer of times, or an inchanter, or a witch,

11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wyzard, or a Necromancer.

12 For all that do these things, are an abomination vnto the Lord: and because of these abominations, the Lord thy God doth driue them out from before thee.

13 Thou shalt bee perfite with the Lord thy God.

14 For these nations which thou shalt possesse, hearkened vnto obseruers of times, and vnto diuiners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to doe.

15 The Lord thy God will raise vp vnto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like vnto me, vnto him ye shall hearken,

16 According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb, in the day of the assembly, saying, Let mee not heare again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let mee see this great fire any more, that I die not.

17 And the Lord said vnto mee, They haue well spoken that which they haue spoken.

18 I will raise them vp a Prophet from among their brethren, like vnto thee, and will put my wordes in his mouth, and hee shall speake vnto them all that I shall command him.

19 And it shall come to passe, that whosoeuer will not hearken vnto my words, which hee shall speake in my name, I will require it of him.

20 But the prophet which shall presume to speake a word in my name, which I haue not commanded him to speake, or that shall speake in the name of other gods, euen that prophet shall die.

21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall wee know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?

22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to passe, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not bee afraid of him.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 "The whole priestly tribe of Levi shall have no share in the heritage with Israel; they shall live on the oblations of the LORD and the portions due to him.

2 Levi shall have no heritage among his brothers; the LORD himself is his heritage, as he has told him.

3 The priests shall have a right to the following things from the people: from those who are offering a sacrifice, whether the victim is from the herd or from the flock, the priest shall receive the shoulder, the jowls and the stomach.

4 You shall also give him the first fruits of your grain and wine and oil, as well as the first fruits of the shearing of your flock;

5 for the LORD, your God, has chosen him and his sons out of all your tribes to be always in attendance to minister in the name of the LORD.

6 "When a Levite goes from one of your communities anywhere in Israel in which he ordinarily resides, to visit, as his heart may desire, the place which the LORD chooses,

7 he may minister there in the name of the LORD, his God, like all his fellow Levites who are in attendance there before the LORD.

8 He shall then receive the same portions to eat as the rest, along with his monetary offerings and heirlooms.

9 "When you come into the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you, you shall not learn to imitate the abominations of the peoples there.

10 Let there not be found among you anyone who immolates his son or daughter in the fire, nor a fortune-teller, soothsayer, charmer, diviner,

11 or caster of spells, nor one who consults ghosts and spirits or seeks oracles from the dead.

12 Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the LORD, and because of such abominations the LORD, your God, is driving these nations out of your way.

13 You, however, must be altogether sincere toward the LORD, your God.

14 Though these nations whom you are to dispossess listen to their soothsayers and fortune-tellers, the LORD, your God, will not permit you to do so.

15 "A prophet like me will the LORD, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsmen; to him you shall listen.

16 This is exactly what you requested of the LORD, your God, at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, 'Let us not again hear the voice of the LORD, our God, nor see this great fire any more, lest we die.'

17 And the LORD said to me, 'This was well said.

18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kinsmen, and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him.

19 If any man will not listen to my words which he speaks in my name, I myself will make him answer for it.

20 But if a prophet presumes to speak in my name an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, he shall die.'

21 "If you say to yourselves, 'How can we recognize an oracle which the LORD has spoken?',

22 know that, even though a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if his oracle is not fulfilled or verified, it is an oracle which the LORD did not speak. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously, and you shall have no fear of him.

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. The Levites were not to have an inheritance among the other tribes, but all Levites were to eat of the offerings.  (Their inheritance is discussed Numbers 18-) Aaron and his sons had specified portions which they were to have.

v 3-5. From the offering of ox or sheep the priests were to receive the shoulder, which we have determined to be the left hind quarter, (See notes EX 29:26-28 where the breast is also mentioned) the two cheeks and the stomach. The latter two seem a little strange to us, but the stomach was considered a delicacy to them. Mexicans today enjoy stomach soup, but our missionaries there do not. They were also to receive the first fruits of grain, wine, oil and sheep fleece.

v 6-8. If a Levite chose to come to the sanctuary to serve, not as a priest, but to assist them, he was also entitled to eat of the priest’s food. He was also allowed to retain the proceeds of property he had sold before oming.

v 9-14. Spiritism is forbidden in this section. Child sacrifice is forbidden, as the heathen caused their children to pass through the fire to Molech. Also all types of conjuring or astrology, use of omens, use of magic formulas and incantations, charmers, consulting mediums, or trying to interrogate the dead. Those were all practices of the heathen around them. Many Americans today consult the astrology chart the first thing they receive the morning paper. Witchcraft and Satanism is also on the increase.

v 15-19. Because of the Israelite fears at Horeb and their request that the Lord speak to Moses and not directly to them, they are assured the Lord will allow a succession of prophets following Moses. The ultimate Great Prophet referred to would be Christ, and they accepted this as a prophecy of the Messiah, Jn. 5:46. This was they passage they had in mind in Jn. 1:21 when they asked John the Baptist if he was that prophet. However they rejected Christ when He came, just as they rejected many of God’s prophets.

v 20- 22. Since the people should trust their prophets, any false prophet should be killed. There were two tests of a false prophet.  a. If he spoke in the name of other gods and refuted the revealed word of God.  b. If the things he prophesied in the name of the Lord did not come to pass. They need not fear those self proclaimed prophets.
