Deuteronomy 11

BLESSINGS OF OBEDIENCE
Like chapters 6 and 28 it an appeal for devotion to God's Word and Obedience to His commandments. A great chapter. Basis for National Prosperity with ominous warnings and wondrous Promises.
KING JAMES BIBLE

1 THEREFORE thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.
2 And know ye this day: for I speak not with your children which have not known, and which have not seen the chastisement of the Lord your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched out arm,
3 And his miracles, and his acts, which he did in the midst of Egypt unto Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and unto all his land;
4 And what he did unto the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to their chariots; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the Lord hath destroyed them unto this day;
5 And what he did unto you in the wilderness, until ye came into this place;
6 And what he did unto Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben: how the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession, in the midst of all Israel:
7 But your eyes have seen all the great acts of the Lord which he did.
8 Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go to possess it;
9 And that ye may prolong your days in the land, which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
10 For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs:
11 But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven:
12 A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.
13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.
15 And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.
16 Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;
17 And then the Lord’s wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the Lord giveth you.
18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.
19 And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
20 And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates:
21 That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
22 For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him;
23 Then will the Lord drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves.
24 Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be.
25 There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the Lord your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you.
26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;
27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day:
28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.
29 And it shall come to pass, when the Lord thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal.
30 Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?
31 For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein.
32 And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.

KING JAMES 1611

1 Therefore thou shalt loue the Lord thy God, and keepe his charge, and his Statutes, and his Iudgements, and his Commandements alway.

2 And know you this day: for I speake not with your children which haue not knowen, and which haue not seene the chastisement of the Lord your God, his greatnesse, his mighty hand, and his stretched out arme,

3 And his miracles, and his actes, which he did in the midst of Egypt, vnto Pharaoh the King of Egypt, and vnto all his land,

4 And what hee did vnto the army of Egypt, vnto their horses, and to their charets, how he made the water of the Red sea to ouerflow them as they pursued after you, and how the Lord hath destroyed them vnto this day,

5 And what hee did vnto you in the wildernesse, vntill yee came into this place,

6 And what he did vnto Dathan, and Abiram, the sonnes of Eliab the sonne of Reuben: how the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them vp, and their housholds, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession in the middest of all Israel.

7 But your eyes haue seene all the great acts of the Lord, which he did.

8 Therefore shall yee keepe all the Commandements which I command you this day, that ye may be strong and goe in, and possesse the land whither ye goe to possesse it:

9 And that yee may prolong your dayes in the lande which the Lord sware vnto your fathers to giue vnto them, and to their seed, a land that floweth with milke and hony.

10 For the land whither thou goest in to possesse it, is not as the lande of Egypt from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbes:

11 But the lande whither ye goe to possesse it, is a lande of hilles and valleys, and drinketh water of the raine of heauen:

12 A lande, which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are alwayes vpon it, from the beginning of the yeere, euen vnto the end of the yeere.

13 And it shall come to passe, if you shall hearken diligently vnto my Commandements which I command you this day, to loue the Lord your God, and to serue him with all your heart, and with all your soule;

14 That I will giue you the raine of your land in his due season, the first raine and the latter raine, that thou mayest gather in thy corne, and thy wine, and thine oyle.

15 And I will send grasse in thy fields for thy cattell, that thou mayest eate and be full.

16 Take heede to your selues, that your heart be not deceiued, and ye turne aside, and serue other gods, and worship them:

17 And then the Lords wrath be kindled against you, and hee shut vp the heauen, that there be no raine, and that the land yeeld not her fruit, and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the Lord giueth you.

18 Therefore shall ye lay vp these my words in your heart, and in your soule, and bind them for a signe vpon your hand, that they may bee as frontlets betweene your eyes.

19 And ye shal teach them your children, speaking of them, when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest downe, and when thou risest vp.

20 And thou shalt write them vpon the doore posts of thine house, and vpon thy gates:

21 That your dayes may bee multiplied, and the dayes of your children, in the land which the Lord sware vnto your fathers to giue them, as the dayes of heauen vpon the earth.

22 For if ye shall diligently keepe all these Commaundements which I command you, to doe them, to loue the Lord your God, to walke in all his wayes, and to cleaue vnto him:

23 Then will the Lord driue out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possesse greater nations, and mightier then your selues.

24 Euery place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread, shall be yours: from the wildernesse, and Lebanon, from the riuer, the riuer Euphrates, euen vnto the vttermost sea, shall your coast be.

25 There shall no man bee able to stand before you: for the Lord your God shall lay the feare of you, and the dread of you vpon all the land that yee shall tread vpon, as hee hath said vnto you.

26 Behold, I set before you this day, a blessing and a curse:

27 A blessing, if ye obey the Commandements of the Lord your God which I command you this day:

28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the Commandements of the Lord your God, but turne aside out of the way, which I command you this day, to goe after other gods which yee haue not knowen.

29 And it shall come to passe when the Lord thy God hath brought thee in, vnto the land whither thou goest to possesse it, that thou shalt put the blessing vpon mount Gerizim, and the curse vpon mount Ebal.

30 Are they not on the other side Iordan, by the way where the Sunne goeth downe, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champion ouer against Gilgal, beside the plaines of Moreh?

31 For ye shall passe ouer Iordan, to goe in to possesse the land which the Lord your God giueth you, and ye shall possesse it, and dwell therein.

32 And yee shall obserue to doe all the Statutes, and Iudgements, which I set before you this day.

Deut 11:29 = John 4:20

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 "Love the LORD, your God, therefore, and always heed his charge: his statutes, decrees and commandments.

2 It is not your children, who have not known it from experience, but you yourselves who must now understand the discipline of the LORD, your God; his majesty, his strong hand and outstretched arm;

3 the signs and deeds he wrought among the Egyptians, on Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and on all his land;

4 what he did to the Egyptian army and to their horses and chariots, engulfing them in the water of the Red Sea as they pursued you, and bringing ruin upon them even to this day;

5 what he did for you in the desert until you arrived in this place;

6 and what he did to the Reubenites Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, when the ground opened its mouth and swallowed them up out of the midst of Israel, with their families and tents and every living thing that belonged to them.

7 With your own eyes you have seen all these great deeds that the LORD has done.

8 Keep all the commandments, then, which I enjoin on you today, that you may be strong enough to enter in and take possession of the land into which you are crossing,

9 and that you may have long life on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers he would give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.

10 "For the land which you are to enter and occupy is not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you would sow your seed and then water it by hand, as in a vegetable garden.

11 No, the land into which you are crossing for conquest is a land of hills and valleys that drinks in rain from the heavens,

12 a land which the LORD, your God, looks after; his eyes are upon it continually from the beginning of the year to the end.

13 If, then, you truly heed my commandments which I enjoin on you today, loving and serving the LORD, your God, with all your heart and all your soul,

14 I will give the seasonal rain to your land, the early rain and the late rain, that you may have your grain, wine and oil to gather in;

15 and I will bring forth grass in your fields for your animals. Thus you may eat your fill.

16 But be careful lest your heart be so lured away that you serve other gods and worship them.

17 For then the wrath of the LORD will flare up against you and he will close up the heavens, so that no rain will fall, and the soil will not yield its crops, and you will soon perish from the good land he is giving you.

18 "Therefore, take these words of mine into your heart and soul. Bind them at your wrist as a sign, and let them be a pendant on your forehead.

19 Teach them to your children, speaking of them at home and abroad, whether you are busy or at rest.

20 And write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates,

21 so that, as long as the heavens are above the earth, you and your children may live on in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers he would give them.

22 "For if you are careful to observe all these commandments I enjoin on you, loving the LORD, your God, and following his ways exactly, and holding fast to him,

23 the LORD will drive all these nations out of your way, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves.

24 Every place where you set foot shall be yours: from the desert and from Lebanon, from the Euphrates River to the Western Sea, shall be your territory.

25 None shall stand up against you; the LORD, your God, will spread the fear and dread of you through any land where you set foot, as he promised you.

26 "I set before you here, this day, a blessing and a curse:

27 a blessing for obeying the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin on you today;

28 a curse if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD, your God, but turn aside from the way I ordain for you today, to follow other gods, whom you have not known.

29 When the LORD, your God, brings you into the land which you are to enter and occupy, then you shall pronounce the blessing on Mount Gerizim, the curse on Mount Ebal.

30 (Are they not beyond the Jordan, on the other side of the western road in the country of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite the Gilgal beside the terebinth of Moreh?)

31 For you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and occupy the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you. When, therefore, you take possession of it and settle there,

32 be careful to observe all the statutes and decrees that I set before you today.

COMMENTARIE

v 1. In view of how God had blessed and multiplied them in the previous verses, they should love Him and always be totally obedient.

v 2-9. Moses reminds these people, who had been under 20 years of age at the Exodus, that they had all seen God’s chastisements, miracles and great wonders from the things done in Egypt to the threshold of entering the land. This included the destruction of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea, and the death of Nadab and Abihu when the earth opened up and swallowed them and their households. They had seen them with their own eyes, not handed down, so it was the more urgent that they obey all the commandments of the Lord and have their days in the land prolonged.

v 10-12. This wasn’t the hard life in Egypt where they had to pump water from the Nile with treadmills to water their crops. In the new land they would have rain water.

v 13-17. If they obeyed the Lord, He would send timely rains for their crops, but if they served other gods, God would shut off the rains and they would perish.

v 18-21. This is another reminder of the importance of having the Word of God constantly on our minds and hearts and teaching it to our children likewise. (See my notes on Ex. 13:8-10 regarding phylacteries and mezuzoth.)

v 22--25. If the people would be obedient, the Lord the Lord would put fear of them into the hearts of their mightier enemies and  they would drive them out. In verse 23 the extent of their land is described, although they only controlled it all a short time.
Jews took it literally that any place in the world they trod upon will be theirs. Most consider that t o be in the promised land, Josh. 1:3, though in Solomon’s time, nations beyond that paid tribute to him. Of course in the Millennium Christ will rule over all.

v 26-32. The Lord gives them a clear cut choice between obedience and it’s effects, and disobedience and it’s effects. This blessing from Mount Gerazim and the curses from Mount Ebal is detailed in Deut. 27:12 to 13:14 and continuing on to 13:68.
