1 THE sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars; |
1The sinne of Iudah is written with a pen of yron, and with the point of a diamond; it is grauen vpon the table of their heart, and vpon the hornes of your altars: 2Whilest their children remember their altars and their groues by the greene trees vpon the high hilles. 3O my mountaine, in the field I will giue thy substance, and all thy treasures to the spoile, and thy high places for sinne, throughout all thy borders. 4And thou, euen thy selfe shalt discontinue from thine heritage that I gaue thee, and I will cause thee to serue thine enemies in the land which thou knowest not: for yee haue kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burne for euer. 5 Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arme, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. 6For hee shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good commeth, but shall inhabite the parched places in the wildernesse, in a salt land and not inhabited. 7Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. 8For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her rootes by the riuer, and shall not see when heate commeth, but her leafe shall be greene, and shall not be carefull in the yeere of drought, neither shall cease from yeelding fruit. 9 The heart is deceitfull aboue all things, and desperately wicked, who can know it? 10I the Lord search the heart, I try the reines, euen to giue euery man according to his waies, and according to the fruit of his doings. 11As the partrich sitteth on egges, and hatcheth them not: so he that getteth riches and not by right, shall leaue them in the midst of his dayes, and at his end shall be a foole. 12 A glorious high throne from the beginning, is the place of our Sanctuarie. 13O Lord, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall bee written in the earth, because they haue forsaken the Lord the fountaine of liuing waters. 14Heale me, O Lord, and I shall be healed: saue me, and I shalbe saued: for thou art my praise. 15 Behold, they say vnto mee, Where is the word of the Lord ? let it come now. 16As for me, I haue not hastened from being a pastour to follow thee, neither haue I desired the wofull day, thou knowest: that which came out of my lips, was right before thee. 17Be not a terrour vnto me, thou art my hope in the day of euill. 18Let them bee confounded that persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring vpon them the day of euill, and destroy them with double destruction. 19 Thus sayd the Lord vnto me, Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Iudah come in, and by the which they goe out, and in all the gates of Ierusalem. 20And say vnto them, Heare ye the word of the Lord, ye kings of Iudah, and all Iudah, and all the inhabitants of Ierusalem, that enter in by these gates. 21Thus saith the Lord, Take heed to your selues, and beare no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Ierusalem. 22Neither carie forth a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day, neither doe ye any worke, but hallowe ye the Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers. 23But they obeyed not, neither inclined their eare, but made their necke stiffe, that they might not heare nor receiue instruction. 24And it shall come to passe, if yee diligently hearken vnto me, saith the Lord, to bring in no burden through the gates of this citie on the Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to doe no worke therein: 25Then shall there enter into the gates of this citie kings and princes sitting vpon the throne of Dauid, riding in charets and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Iudah and the inhabitants of Ierusalem: and this citie shall remaine for euer. 26And they shall come from the cities of Iudah, and from the places about Ierusalem, and from the lande of Beniamin, and from the plaine and from the mountaines, and from the South, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meate offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise vnto the house of the Lord. 27But if you will not hearken vnto me to hallow the Sabbath day, and not to beare a burden, euen entring in at the gates of Ierusalem on the Sabbath day: then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall deuoure the palaces of Ierusalem, and it shall not be quenched. |

1 The sin of Judah is written with an iron stylus, Engraved with a diamond point upon the tablets of their hearts.(And the horns of their altars, 2 when their sons remember their altars and their sacred poles, beside the green trees, on the high hills, 3 the peaks in the highland.) Your wealth and all your treasures I will give as spoil. In recompense for all your sins throughout your borders, 4 You will relinquish your hold on your heritage which I have given you. I will enslave you to your enemies in a land that you know not: For a fire has been kindled by my wrath that will burn forever. 5 Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in human beings, who seeks his strength in flesh, whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 He is like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season, But stands in a lava waste, a salt and empty earth. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD. 8 He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; In the year of drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit. 9 More tortuous than all else is the human heart, beyond remedy; who can understand it? 10 I, the LORD, alone probe the mind and test the heart, To reward everyone according to his ways, according to the merit of his deeds. 11 A partridge that mothers a brood not her own is the man who acquires wealth unjustly: In midlife it will desert him; in the end he is only a fool. 12 A throne of glory, exalted from the beginning, such is our holy place. 13 O hope of Israel, O LORD! all who forsake you shall be in disgrace; The rebels in the land shall be put to shame; they have forsaken the source of living waters (the LORD). 14 Heal me, LORD, that I may be healed; save me, that I may be saved, for it is you whom I praise. 15 See how they say to me, "Where is the word of the LORD? Let it come to pass!" 16 Yet I did not press you to send calamity; the day without remedy I have not desired. You know what passed my lips; it is present before you. 17 Do not be my ruin, you, my refuge in the day of misfortune. 18 Let my persecutors, not me, be confounded; let them, not me, be broken. Bring upon them the day of misfortune, crush them with repeated destruction. 19 Thus said the LORD to me: Go, stand at the Gate of Benjamin, where the kings of Judah enter and leave, and at the other gates of Jerusalem. 20 There say to them: Hear the word of the LORD, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all you citizens of Jerusalem who enter these gates! 21 Thus says the LORD: As you love your lives, take care not to carry burdens on the sabbath day, to bring them in through the gates of Jerusalem. 22 Bring no burden from your homes on the sabbath. Do no work whatever, but keep holy the sabbath, as I commanded your fathers, 23 though they did not listen or give ear, but stiffened their necks so as not to hear or take correction. 24 If you obey me wholeheartedly, says the LORD, and carry no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath, keeping the sabbath holy and abstaining from all work on it, 25 then, through the gates of this city, kings who sit upon the throne of David will continue to enter, riding in their chariots or upon their horses, along with their princes, and the men of Judah, and the citizens of Jerusalem. This city will remain inhabited forever. 26 To it people will come from the cities of Judah and the neighborhood of Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin and from the foothills, from the hill country and the Negeb, to bring holocausts and sacrifices, cereal offerings and incense and thank offerings to the house of the LORD. 27 But if you do not obey me and keep holy the sabbath, if you carry burdens and come through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath, I will set unquenchable fire to its gates, which will consume the palaces of Jerusalem. |
v 1-4. Sin was so ingrained in the people that it was if it were carved in stone with a hard diamond, not like worn away engravings in soft old tombstones. Even children participated in idolatry, so Babylon would plunder the country and people would be removed from the inheritance God gave them.
v 5-8. Those who trusted in man’s power and alliances would be like a scrawny desert bush, but those trusting the Lord like a flourishing tree planted by water.
v 9-11. People could not understand the comparison because of their deceitful hearts, but God knew their hearts and would judge accordingly. Riches gained by unjust means would be lost, just as a partridge sitting on other birds eggs lost the birds.
v 12-14. God is majestic, but those who reject him will be like rejecting a fountain of living water for a place of dust.
v 15-18. The people scoffed at Jeremiah and challenged him to bring fulfillment instantly. He protests he had been faithful to God, so he asks God to shame them and bring on them the full measure of destruction which had been proclaimed.
v 19-23. Jeremiah was to give his message at the gate used by kings, probably the Eastern Gate, as well as all the other gates so every one could hear. Unlike their fathers, they were to keep the Sabbath day holy as evidence of their faithfulness.
v 24-27. If they would keep the Law faithfully, Jerusalem would be inhabited and with leaders forever, and people would come from all over the land bringing offerings and sacrifices to the temple. If they dishonored the Sabbath, God would bring a fire of judgment which would destroy Jerusalem’s palaces and defenses.
