1 THUS saith the Lord, Go and get a potter’s earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests; |
1Thus saith the Lord, Goe and get a potters earthen bottell, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the Priestes. 2And goe forth vnto the valley of the sonne of Hinnom, which is by the entrie of the Eastgate, and proclaime there the words that I shall tell thee: 3And say, Heare ye the word of the Lord, O kings of Iudah, and inhabitants of Ierusalem; Thus saith the Lord of hostes, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring euill vpon this place, the which whosoeuer heareth, his eares shall tingle. 4Because they haue forsaken mee, and haue estranged this place, and haue burnt incense in it vnto other gods, whom neither they, nor their fathers haue knowen, nor the kings of Iudah, and haue filled this place with the blood of innocents. 5They haue built also the high places of Baal, to burne their sonnes with fire for burnt offerings vnto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my minde. 6Therefore behold, the daies come, saith the Lord, that this place shall no more bee called Tophet, nor the valley of the sonne of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter. 7And I will make void the counsell of Iudah and Ierusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their liues: and their carkeises will I giue to be meat for the foules of the heauen, and for the beasts of the earth. 8And I will make this citie desolate and an hissing: euery one that passeth thereby shalbe astonished and hisse, because of all the plagues thereof. 9And I will cause them to eate the flesh of their sonnes and the flesh of their daughters, and they shal eate euery one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitnesse, wherewith their enemies, and they that seeke their liues, shall straiten them. 10Then shalt thou breake þe bottle in the sight of the men that goe with thee, 11And shalt say vnto them; Thus saith the Lord of hostes, Euen so will I breake this people and this citie as one breaketh a potters vessell that cannot bee made whole againe, and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place else to bury. 12Thus will I doe vnto this place, sayth the Lord, and to the inhabitants thereof, and euen make their citie as Tophet. 13And the houses of Ierusalem, and the houses of the kings of Iudah shall bee defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses vpon whose roofes they haue burnt incense vnto all the hoste of heauen, & haue powred out drinke offrings vnto other gods. 14Then came Ieremiah from Tophet, whither the Lord had sent him to prophecie, and hee stood in the court of the Lords house, and said to all the people, 15Thus saith the Lord of hostes the God of Israel, Behold, I wil bring vpon this city, and vpon all her townes all the euill that I haue pronounced against it, because they haue hardened their neckes, that they might not heare my wordes. |

1 Thus said the LORD: Go, buy a potter's earthen flask. Take along some of the elders of the people and of the priests, 2 and go out toward the Valley of Ben-hinnom, at the entrance of the Potsherd Gate; there proclaim the words which I will speak to you: 3 Listen to the word of the LORD, kings of Judah and citizens of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I am going to bring such evil upon this place that all who hear of it will feel their ears tingle. 4 This is because they have forsaken me and alienated this place by burning in it incense to strange gods which neither they nor their fathers knew; and the kings of Judah have filled this place with the blood of the innocent. 5 They have built high places for Baal to immolate their sons in fire as holocausts to Baal: such a thing as I neither commanded nor spoke of, nor did it ever enter my mind. 6 Therefore, days will come, says the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth, or the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but rather, the Valley of Slaughter. 7 In this place I will foil the plan of Judah and Jerusalem; I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, by the hand of those that seek their lives. Their corpses I will give as food to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field. 8 I will make this city an object of amazement and derision. Because of all its wounds, every passer-by will be amazed and will catch his breath. 9 I will have them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters; they shall eat one another's flesh during the strict siege by which their enemies and those who seek their lives will confine them. 10 And you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who went with you, 11 and say to them: Thus says the LORD of hosts: Thus will I smash this people and this city, as one smashes a clay pot so that it cannot be repaired. And Topheth shall be a burial place, for lack of place to bury elsewhere. 12 Thus I will do to this place and to its inhabitants, says the LORD; I will make this city like Topheth. 13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the palaces of the kings of Judah shall be defiled like the place of Topheth, all the houses upon whose roofs they burnt incense to the whole host of heaven and poured out libations to strange gods. 14 When Jeremiah returned from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy, he stood in the court of the house of God and said to all the people: 15 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I will surely bring upon this city all the evil with which I threatened it, because they have stiffened their necks and have not obeyed my words. |
v 1-6. This Chapter is on the broken, narrow neck pottery vessel. At the command of God, Jeremiah took it and a group of elders and priests to the east (Potsherd Gate or Dung Gate) where broken pottery and other refuse was thrown in the Hinnom Valley. The evil God would bring upon Jerusalem because of their idolatry was enough to make their ears tingle. They had offered innocent children there, and enough people would die there that the name would be changed to Valley of Slaughter.
v 7-9. People would even eat their children in the famine, and so many people would die unburied, the carcasses would be consumed by beasts and birds.
v 10-13. Jeremiah broke the pot to demonstrate how Jerusalem and the nation would be broken and there would be mass burial there because of the sins of Judah, when Babylon came. This ties in with Zech. 11: 12,13, which foretells Judas casting the tainted 30 pieces of silver before the Sanhedrin and they bought the potters field for burying the poor. God permitted Rome to come in and destroy them by thousands, and this further fulfilled the prophecy of v 11, that there would be no place left to bury.
v 14,15. Jeremiah returned to the temple court and repeated that message to all the people. God would bring this evil on them because they would not listen to Him.
