1 NOW Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things.
2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.
3 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, The Lord hath not called thy name Pashur, but Magor-missabib.
4 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends: and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it: and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword.
5 Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this city, and all the labours thereof, and all the precious things thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.
6 And thou, Pashur, and all that dwell in thine house shall go into captivity: and thou shalt come to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and shalt be buried there, thou, and all thy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied lies.
7 O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me.
8 For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the Lord was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily.
9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
10 For I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.
11 But the Lord is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten.
12 But, O Lord of hosts, that triest the righteous, and seest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause.
13 Sing unto the Lord, praise ye the Lord: for he hath delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.
14 Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.
15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad.
16 And let that man be as the cities which the Lord overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide;
17 Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me.

15Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying: A man child is borne vnto thee, making him very glad.

16And let that man be as the cities which the Lord ouerthrew and repented not: and let him heare the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noonetide,

17Because he slew me not from the wombe: or that my mother might haue beene my graue, and her wombe to be alwaies great with me.

18Wherefore came I forth out of the wombe to see labour and sorrow, that my daies should be consumed with shame?

1 Jeremiah was heard prophesying these things by the priest Pashhur, son of Immer, chief officer in the house of the LORD.

2 So he had the prophet scourged and placed in the stocks at the upper Gate of Benjamin in the house of the LORD.

3 The next morning, after Pashhur had released Jeremiah from the stocks, the prophet said to him: Instead of Pashhur, the LORD will name you "Terror on every side."

4 For thus says the LORD: Indeed, I will deliver you to terror, you and all your friends. Your own eyes shall see them fall by the sword of their enemies. All Judah I will deliver to the king of Babylon, who shall take them captive to Babylon or slay them with the sword.

5 All the wealth of this city, all it has toiled for and holds dear, all the treasures of the kings of Judah, I will give as plunder into the hands of their foes, who shall seize it and carry it away to Babylon.

6 You Pashhur, and all the members of your household shall go into exile. To Babylon you shall go, you and all your friends; there you shall die and be buried, because you have prophesied lies to them.

7 You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed. All the day I am an object of laughter; everyone mocks me.

8 Whenever I speak, I must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; The word of the LORD has brought me derision and reproach all the day.

9 I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it.

10 Yes, I hear the whisperings of many: "Terror on every side! Denounce! let us denounce him!" All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine. "Perhaps he will be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him."

11 But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph. In their failure they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion.

12 O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, Let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you I have entrusted my cause.

13 Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, For he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!

14 Cursed be the day on which I was born! May the day my mother gave me birth never be blessed!

15 Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, saying, "A child, a son, has been born to you!" filling him with great joy.

16 Let that man be like the cities which the LORD relentlessly overthrew; Let him hear war cries in the morning, battle alarms at noonday,

17 because he did not dispatch me in the womb! Then my mother would have been my grave, her womb confining me forever.

18 Why did I come forth from the womb, to see sorrow and pain, to end my days in shame?

v 1,2. Pashur, son of Immer the priest, (not same Pashur in 21:1) was also the chief officer maintaining order in the temple. He smote Jeremiah, (not the word to slap) probably with forty lashes, Deut. 25:2.3, then put him in stocks overnight, both painful experiences.

v 3-6. When he was released next day, the Lord had him change Pashur’s name to Magor-Missabib, meaning terror on every side. He would watch in terror as Babylon killed, captured, and plundered Jerusalem. Pashur and his family would specifically be taken to Babylon because he rejected God’s message and instead, prophesied lies.

v 7-9. In emotional outburst, Jeremiah felt deceived because he had faithfully given God’s message, but was mocked and derided daily. His impulse was to quit the ministry and say no more about God and coming judgment, but God’s word was in him like a burning fire and he just could not keep still. (We need that fire today.)

v 10-13. His message was being thrown back in his face and even his former friends sought for a slip up from him so they could take revenge on him. But then he had the assurance that the Lord was on his side and the masses would fall before Him. After he called to God for vengeance, his assurance led him to praise and sing.

v 14-18. As Jeremiah thought upon the coming destruction, he plummeted from the height of confidence to the depth of despair. It is common to let down after crisis when adrenaline was flowing and faith strong. He cursed the day he was born and even the man who brought tidings of his birth. He wished he had not been born, or that he had been killed at birth, or that he had died in the womb. His regrets seem severe, but he is actually voicing God’s regret for what He must do to chasten His people.
