Jeremiah 47

KING JAMES BIBLE

THE word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.
2 Thus saith the Lord; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.
3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the rushing of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands;
4 Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the Lord will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.
5 Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?
6 O thou sword of the Lord, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.
7 How can it be quiet, seeing the Lord hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 This is the word that came from the LORD to the prophet Jeremiah concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh attacked Gaza:

2 Thus says the LORD: Behold: waters are rising from the north, a torrent in flood; It shall flood the land and all that is in it, the cities and their people. All the people of the land set up a wailing cry.

3 They hear the stamping hooves of his steeds, the rattling chariots, the rumbling wheels. Fathers turn not to save their children; their hands fall helpless

4 Because of the day which has come to ruin all the Philistines, And cut off from Tyre and Sidon the last of their allies. Yes, the LORD is destroying the Philistines, the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor.

5 Gaza is shaved bald, Ashkelon is reduced to silence; Ashdod, the remnant of their strength, how long will you gash yourself?

6 Alas, sword of the LORD! how long till you find rest? Return into your scabbard; stop, be still!

7 How can it find rest when the LORD has commanded it? Against Ashkelon and the seashore he has appointed it.

COMMENTARIE

v 1. Next Jeremiah pronounces judgment on the Philistines. They had been a menace to Israel from the time they entered the Promised Land. Balance of power had swung back and forth. This was prophesied before Pharaoh attacked Gaza on one of his thrusts north against Babylon, probably 609 BC.

v 2-7. Babylon’s armies would come in like an overflowing torrent to sweep away the Philistines. Egypt had taken Gaza and Nebuchadnezzar later took the coastal city of Askelon. Philistines were caught between the two armies and would be destroyed. The Babylonian army with their fast moving horses and chariots were so terrorizing that fathers would run for their lives without even trying to protect their children. They cut themselves and shaved bald as signs of deep mourning. The sword of the Lord would not rest until this was accomplished.
