1 THE word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying, |
1The word which came vnto Ieremiah from the Lord, in the daies of Iehoiakim the sonne of Iosiah King of Iudah, saying, 2Goe vnto the house of the Rechabites, and speake vnto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and giue them wine to drinke. 3Then I tooke Iaazaniah the sonne of Ieremiah the sonne of Habazimah and his brethren, and all his sonnes, and the whole house of the Rechabites. 4And I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sonnes of Hanan, the sonne of Igdaliah a man of God, which was by the chamber of the Princes, which was aboue the chamber of Maaseiah, the sonne of Shallum, the keeper of the doore. 5And I set before the sonnes of the house of the Rechabites, pottes, full of wine, and cups, and I said vnto them, Drinke ye wine. 6But they said, We will drinke no wine: for Ionadab the sonne of Rechab our father, commanded vs, saying; Ye shall drinke no wine, neither ye, nor your sonnes for euer. 7Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant Uineyard, nor haue any: but all your dayes ye shall dwell in tents, that ye may liue many dayes in the land where ye be strangers. 8Thus haue we obeyed the voice of Ionadab the sonne of Rechab our father, in all that he hath charged vs, to drinke no wine all our dayes, we, our wiues, our sonnes, nor our daughters: 9Nor to build houses for vs to dwel in, neither haue we Uineyard, nor field, nor seed. 10But wee haue dwelt in tents, and haue obeyed, and done according to all that Ionadab our father commanded vs. 11But it came to passe when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came vp into the land, that we said, Come, and let vs goe to Ierusalem for feare of the armie of the Caldeans, and for feare of the armie of the Syrians: so we dwell at Ierusalem. 12 Then came the word of the Lord vnto Ieremiah, saying, 13Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Goe and tel the men of Iudah, and inhabitants of Ierusalem, Will yee not receiue instruction to hearken to my words, saith the Lord ? 14The wordes of Ionadab the sonne of Rechab, that hee commanded his sonnes, not to drinke wine, are performed; for vnto this day they drinke none, but obey their fathers commandement: notwithstanding I haue spoken vnto you, rising early, and speaking, but ye hearkened not vnto me. 15I haue sent also vnto you all my seruants the Prophets, rising vp early and sending them, saying, Returne ye now euery man from his euil way, and amend your doings, and goe not after other gods to serue them, and ye shall dwell in the land, which I haue giuen to you, and to your fathers: but yee haue not enclined your eare, nor hearkned vnto me. 16Because the sonnes of Ionadab, the sonne of Rechab, haue performed the commaundement of their father, which he commaunded them, but this people hath not hearkened vnto me; 17Therefore thus saith the Lord God of hostes, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring vpon Iudah, and vpon all the inhabitants of Ierusalem, all the euill that I haue pronounced against them: because I haue spoken vnto them, but they haue not heard, and I haue called vnto them, but they haue not answered. 18 And Ieremiah sayd vnto the house of the Rechabites, Thus sayth the Lord of hosts the God of Israel, Because ye haue obeyed the commandement of Ionadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according vnto all that he hath commanded you: 19Therefore thus sayth the Lord of hostes, the God of Israel, Ionadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for euer. |

1 This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah: 2 Approach the Rechabites and speak to them; bring them into the house of the LORD, to one of the rooms, and give them wine to drink. 3 So I went and brought Jaazaniah, son of Jeremiah, son of Habazziniah, his brothers and all his sons, the whole company of the Rechabites, 4 into the house of the LORD, to the room of the sons of Hanan, son of Igdaliah, the man of God, next to the princes' room, above the room of Maaseiah, son of Shallum, keeper of the doorway. 5 I set before these Rechabite men bowls full of wine and offered them cups to drink the wine. 6 "We do not drink wine," they said to me: "Jonadab, Rechab's son, our father, forbade us in these words: 'Neither you nor your children shall ever drink wine. 7 Build no house and sow no seed; neither plant nor own a vineyard. You shall dwell in tents all your life, so that you may live long on the earth where you are wayfarers.' 8 Now we have heeded Jonadab, Rechab's son, our father, in all his prohibitions. All our lives we have not drunk wine, neither we, nor our wives, nor our sons, nor our daughters. 9 We build no houses to live in; we own no vineyards or fields or crops, 10 and we live in tents; we obediently do everything our father Jonadab commanded us. 11 But when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, invaded this land, we decided to come into Jerusalem to escape the army of the Chaldeans and the army of Aram; that is why we are now living in Jerusalem." 12 Then this word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 13 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Go, say to the men of Judah and to the citizens of Jerusalem: Will you not take correction and obey my words? says the LORD. 14 The advice of Jonadab, Rechab's son, by which he forbade his children to drink wine, has been followed: to this day they have not drunk it; they obeyed their father's command. Me, however, you have not obeyed, although I spoke to you untiringly and insistently. 15 I kept sending you all my servants the prophets, telling you to turn back, all of you, from your evil way; to reform your conduct, and not follow strange gods or serve them, if you would remain on the land which I gave you and your fathers; but you did not heed me or obey me. 16 Yes, the children of Jonadab, Rechab's son, observed the command which their father laid on them; but this people does not obey me! 17 Now, therefore, says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel: I will bring upon Judah and all the citizens of Jerusalem every evil that I threatened; because when I spoke they did not obey, when I called they did not answer. 18 But to the company of the Rechabites Jeremiah said: Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Since you have obeyed the command of Jonadab, your father, kept all his commands and done everything he commanded you, 19 thus therefore says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Never shall there fail to be a descendant of Jonadab, Rechab's son, standing in my service. |
v 1-5. This portion is out of context, having occurred 11-20 years earlier, but is inserted here to show the consistency of the Rechabites compared to the other people. These rough nomads were brought into a prominent meeting room in the temple and offered, actually instructed to drink wine.
v 6-11. Their ancestor, Jonadab, a descendant of Moses father-in-law, 1 Chr, 2:54,55, and the one who helped Jehu exterminate Baal worship, 2 Ki. 10:15-27, lived set apart for God. He had told them to never drink wine, build houses or vineyards, but to be always nomads. They had obeyed him explicitly and refused the wine, and had only come to Jerusalem to get away from Nebuchadnezzar’s army.
v 12-16. This was a lesson and example to Judah. Rechabites had faithfully obeyed their forefather, but Judah consistently disobeyed God’s commands.
v 17. God would therefore punish Judah with everything Jeremiah predicted.
v 18,19. Because the Rechabites had faithfully obeyed everything commanded by Jonadab, God promised to reward them. They would always have someone in their line to serve, worship God. We don’t know where they are today, but while some families have no doubt become extinct, Rechabites will definitely be in the Millennium.
