1 THUS saith the Lord; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word, |
1Thus saith the Lord, Goe downe to the house of the king of Iudah, and speake there this word, 2And say, Heare the word of the Lord, O king of Iudah, that sittest vpon the throne of Dauid, thou, and thy seruants, and thy people that enter in by these gates. 3Thus saith the Lord, Execute ye iudgement and righteousnesse, and deliuer the spoiler out of the hand of the oppressour: and doe no wrong, doe no violence to the stranger, the fatherlesse, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place. 4For if ye doe this thing indeede, then shall there enter in by the gates of this house, Kings sitting vpon the throne of Dauid, riding in charets and on horses, he, and his seruants, and his people. 5But if yee will not heare these words, I sweare by my selfe, saith the Lord, that this house shall become a desolation. 6For thus saith the Lord vnto the kings house of Iudah, Thou art Gilead vnto me, and the head of Lebanon: yet surely I will make thee a wildernesse, and cities which are not inhabited. 7And I will prepare destroyers against thee, euery one with his weapons, and they shall cut downe thy choise cedars, and cast them into the fire. 8And many nations shall passe by this citie, and they shall say euery man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus vnto this great citie? 9Then they shall answere, Because they haue forsaken the couenant of the Lord their God, and worshipped other gods, and serued them. 10 Weepe ye not for the dead, neither bemoane him, but weepe sore for him that goeth away: for he shall returne no more, nor see his natiue countrey. 11For thus saith the Lord touching Shallum, the sonne of Iosiah king of Iudah which reigned in stead of Iosiah his father, which went forth out of this place, He shall not returne thither any more. 12But he shall die in the place whither they haue led him captiue, and shal see this land no more. 13 Woe vnto him that buildeth his house by vnrighteousnesse, and his chambers by wrong: that vseth his neighbours seruice without wages, and giueth him not for his worke: 14That saith, I will build mee a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windowes, and it is sieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion. 15Shalt thou reigne because thou closest thy selfe in cedar? did not thy father eate and drinke, and doe iudgment and iustice, and then it was wel with him? 16He iudged the cause of the poore and needy, then it was well with him: was not this to know me, saith the Lord ? 17But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy couetousnesse, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence to doe it. 18Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Iehoiakim the sonne of Iosiah king of Iudah, They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother, or ah sister: they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah Lord, or ah his glory. 19He shall be buried with the buriall of an asse, drawen and cast forth beyond the gates of Ierusalem. 20 Goe vp to Lebanon, and crie, and lift vp thy voice in Bashan, and crie from the passages: for all thy louers are destroyed. 21I spake vnto thee in thy prosperitie, but thou saidest, I will not heare: this hath bin thy maner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice. 22The winde shall eate vp all thy pastors, and thy louers shall goe into captiuitie, surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickednesse. 23O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the Cedars, how gracious shalt thou bee when pangs come vpon thee, the paine as of a woman in trauell? 24As I liue, saith the Lord, though Coniah the sonne of Iehoiakim king of Iudah were the signet vpon my right hand, yet would I plucke thee thence. 25And I will giue thee into the hand of them that seeke thy life, and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest, euen into the hand of Nebuchad-rezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of the Caldeans. 26And I will cast thee out, and thy mother that bare thee, into another countrey where ye were not borne, and there shall ye die. 27But to the land whereunto they desire to returne, thither shall they not returne. 28Is this man Coniah a despised broken idole? is hee a vessell wherein is no pleasure? wherefore are they cast out, he and his seed, and are cast into a land which they know not? 29O earth, earth, earth, heare the word of the Lord: 30Thus saith the Lord, Write ye this man childlesse, a man that shall not prosper in his dayes: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting vpon the throne of Dauid, and ruling any more in Iudah. |

1 The LORD told me this: Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and there deliver this message: 2 You shall say: Listen to the word of the LORD, king of Judah, who sit on the throne of David, you, your ministers, and your people that enter by these gates! 3 Thus says the LORD: Do what is right and just. Rescue the victim from the hand of his oppressor. Do not wrong or oppress the resident alien, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place. 4 If you carry out these commands, kings who succeed to the throne of David will continue to enter the gates of this palace, riding in chariots or mounted on horses, with their ministers, and their people. 5 But if you do not obey these commands, I swear by myself, says the LORD: this palace shall become rubble. 6 For thus says the LORD concerning the palace of the king of Judah: Though you be to me like Gilead, like the peak of Lebanon, I will turn you into a waste, a city uninhabited. 7 Against you I will send destroyers, each with his axe: They shall cut down your choice cedars, and cast them into the fire. 8 Many people will pass by this city and ask one another: "Why has the LORD done this to so great a city?" 9 And the answer will be given: "Because they have deserted their covenant with the LORD, their God, by worshiping and serving strange gods." 10 Weep not for him who is dead, mourn not for him! Weep rather for him who is going away; never again will he see the land of his birth. 11 Thus says the LORD concerning Shallum, son of Josiah, king of Judah, who succeeded his father as king. He has left this place never to return. 12 Rather, he shall die in the place where they exiled him; this land he shall not see again. 13 Woe to him who builds his house on wrong, his terraces on injustice; Who works his neighbor without pay, and gives him no wages. 14 Who says, "I will build myself a spacious house, with airy rooms," Who cuts out windows for it, panels it with cedar, and paints it with vermillion. 15 Must you prove your rank among kings by competing with them in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink? He did what was right and just, and it went well with him. 16 Because he dispensed justice to the weak and the poor, it went well with him. Is this not true knowledge of me? says the LORD. 17 But your eyes and heart are set on nothing except on your own gain, On shedding innocent blood, on practicing oppression and extortion. 18 Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah: They shall not lament him, "Alas! my brother"; "Alas! sister." They shall not lament him, "Alas, Lord! alas, Majesty!" 19 The burial of an ass shall he be given, dragged forth and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem. 20 Scale Lebanon and cry out, in Bashan lift up your voice; Cry out from Abarim, for all your lovers are crushed. 21 I spoke to you when you were secure, but you answered, "I will not listen." This has been your way from your youth, not to listen to my voice. 22 The wind shall shepherd all your shepherds, your lovers shall go into exile. Surely then you shall be ashamed and confounded because of all your wickedness. 23 You who dwell on Lebanon, who nest in the cedars, How you shall groan when pains come upon you, like the pangs of a woman in travail! 24 As I live, says the LORD, if you, Coniah, son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, are a signet ring on my right hand, I will snatch you from it. 25 I will deliver you into the hands of those who seek your life; the hands of those whom you fear; the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and the Chaldeans. 26 I will cast you out, you and the mother who bore you, into a different land from the one you were born in; and there you shall die. 27 Neither of them shall come back to the land for which they yearn. 28 Is this man Coniah a vessel despised, to be broken up, an instrument that no one wants? Why are he and his descendants cast out? why thrown into a land they know not? 29 O land, land, land, hear the word of the LORD - 30 Thus says the LORD: Write this man down as one childless, who will never thrive in his lifetime! No descendant of his shall achieve a seat on the throne of David as ruler again over Judah. |
v 1-5. Chapter 23 was by way of messengers, but now God sent Jeremiah to the king personally with promise of blessing for justice or destruction for disobedience.
v 6-9. Other nations would wonder why God allowed this palace of cedar to be destroyed, then understand it was because Judah turned from God to worship idols.
v 10-12. Shallum or Jehoahaz succeeded Josiah but only reigned three months before before being taken captive to Egypt. See 2 Ki. 23:29-34. He would die there.
v 13,14. His brother Jehoiakim, enslaved people to build him a beautiful house.
v 15-17. His father, Josiah, did justly, but he oppressed and shed innocent blood.
v 18,19. People didn’t mourn this cruel king but drug him out of the city to bury. He may have been assassinated to appease Nebuchadnezzar to spare the city.
v 20-23. So much cedar had been imported that Jerusalem is called Lebanon. It should lament her kings are being taken away and her allies crushed by Babylon.
v 24-27. Jehoiakim’s son, Coniah (Jeconiah or Jehoiachin ). Because of it’s legal character, a signet ring was a mans most prized possession. This is the significance where the Lord expresses extreme repudiation of Judah and king Coniah for their sins when He says, “Though Coniah were the signet on my right hand, yet would I pluck thee hence.” He, his mother and others would be taken to Babylon and not return. False prophets wrongly predicted he would return, 28:1-4.
v 29,30. This is a very important prophetic verse. He was not childless, 1 Chron. 3:17,18, but he would not have a descendent who would be king. His uncle, Zedekiah, was the last king. Long term is especially important to us. If Jesus had been born of Joseph in the line of Jeconiah, Mt.1:12,16, He could not have fulfilled prophecy to sit on the throne of David, Lk. 1:32,33. His legal right to the throne was through His foster father, Joseph, but His physical descent by Mary from David was through Nathan, not Solomon. See Lk. 3:31 and Matt. 1:17. Thus Christ was not under the curse of Coniah.
