1 AGAINST Moab thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed. |
1Against Moab thus sayth the Lord of hostes, the God of Israel, Woe vnto Nebo, for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken. Misgab is confounded and dismayed. 2There shall bee no more prayse of Moab: in Heshbon they haue deuised euill against it; come and let vs cut it off from being a nation; also thou shalt bee cut downe, O Madmen, the sword shall pursue thee. 3A voice of crying shall be from Horonaim; Spoiling & great destruction. 4Moab is destroyed, her little ones haue caused a crie to be heard. 5For in the going vp of Luhith continuall weeping shall go vp; for in the going downe of Horonaim the enemies haue heard a crie of destruction. 6Flee, saue your liues, and be like the heath in the wildernesse. 7 For because thou hast trusted in thy workes, and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken, and Chemosh shall goe foorth into captiuitie with his priests and his princes together. 8And the spoyler shall come vpon euery citie, and no citie shall escape: the valley also shal perish, & the plaine shall be destroyed, as þe Lord hath spoken. 9Giue wings vnto Moab, that it may flee and get away: for the cities thereof shalbe desolate, without any to dwell therein. 10Cursed be he that doeth the worke of the Lord deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth backe his sword from blood. 11 Moab hath bene at ease from his youth, and hee hath setled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessell to vessell, neither hath he gone into captiuitie: therefore his taste remained in him, and his sent is not changed. 12Therfore behold, the dayes come, sayth the Lord, that I will send vnto him wanderers that shall cause him to wander, and shall emptie his vessels, and breake their bottles. 13And Moab shall bee ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence. 14 How say yee, We are mightie and strong men for the warre? 15Moab is spoiled and gone vp out of her cities, and his chosen yong men are gone downe to the slaughter, sayth the King, whose Name is the Lord of hostes. 16The calamitie of Moab is neere to come, and his affliction hasteth fast. 17All yee that are about him bemoane him, and all yee that know his Name, say, How is the strong staffe broken, and the beautifull rod! 18Thou daughter that doest inhabit Dibon, come downe from thy glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab shall come vpon thee, and he shall destroy thy strong holdes. 19O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way and espie, aske him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, and say, What is done? 20Moab is confounded, for it is broken downe: howle and cry, tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled, 21And iudgement is come vpon the plaine countrey, vpon Holon, and vpon Iahazah, and vpon Mephaath, 22And vpon Dibon, and vpon Nebo, and vpon Beth-diblathaim, 23And vpon Kiriathaim, and vpon Beth-Gamul, and vpon Beth-meon, 24And vpon Kerioth, and vpon Bozrah, and vpon all the cities of the land of Moab farre or neere. 25The horne of Moab is cut off, & his arme is broken, saith the Lord. 26 Make ye him drunken: for hee magnified himselfe against the Lord: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shalbe in derision. 27For was not Israel a derision vnto thee? was hee found among theeues? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for ioy. 28O yee that dwell in Moab, leaue the cities and dwell in the rocke, and be like the doue that maketh her nest in the sides of the holes mouth. 29We haue heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftinesse and his arrogancie, and his pride, and the hautinesse of his heart. 30I knowe his wrath, sayeth the Lord, but it shall not be so, his lyes shall not so effect it. 31Therefore will I howle for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab, mine heart shall mourne for the men of Kir-heres. 32O vine of Sibmah, I wil weepe for thee, with the weeping of Iazer; thy plants are gone ouer the sea, they reach euen to the sea of Iazer, the spoiler is fallen vpon thy summer fruits, and vpon thy vintage. 33And ioy and gladnesse is taken from the plentifull field, and from the land of Moab, and I haue caused wine to faile from the winepresses, none shall tread with shouting, their showting shall be no showting. 34From the cry of Heshbon euen vnto Elealeh, and euen vnto Iahaz haue they vttered their voyce, from Zoar euen vnto Horonaim as an heifer of three yeeres old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate. 35Moreouer, I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the Lord, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his Gods. 36Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir-heres: because the riches that hee hath gotten is perished. 37For euery head shall be bald, and euery beard clipt: vpon all the hands shall be cuttings, and vpon the loines sackcloth. 38There shall be lamentation generally vpon all the house toppes of Moab, and in the streetes thereof: for I haue broken Moab like a vessell, wherin is no pleasure, saith the Lord. 39They shall howle, saying; How is it broken downe? how hath Moab turned the backe with shame? so shall Moab be a derision, and a dismaying to all them about him. 40For thus saith the Lord, Behold, hee shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings ouer Maob. 41Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, & the mighty mens hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs. 42And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himselfe against the Lord. 43Feare, and the pit, and the snare shall be vpon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the Lord. 44Hee that fleeth from the feare shall fall into the pit, and he that getteth vp out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring vpon it, euen vpon Moab, the yeere of their visitation, saith the Lord. 45They that fled, stood vnder the shadow of Heshbon, because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the middest of Sihon, and shall deuoure the corner of Moab, and the crowne of the head of the tumultuous ones. 46Woe be vnto thee, O Moab, the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sonnes are taken captiues, and thy daughters captiues. 47 Yet will I bring againe the captiuitie of Moab in the later dayes, saith the Lord. Thus farre is the iudgement of Moab. |

1 Concerning Moab, thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Woe to Nebo, it is laid waste; Kiriathaim is disgraced and captured, Disgraced and overthrown is the stronghold: 2 Moab's glory is no more. Evil they plan against Heshbon: "Come, let us put an end to her as a people." You, too, Madmen, shall be reduced to silence; behind you stalks the sword. 3 Listen! a cry from Horonaim of ruin and great destruction! 4 Moab is crushed, their outcry is heard in Zoar. 5 The ascent of Luhith they climb weeping; On the descent to Horonaim the cry of destruction is heard. 6 "Flee, save your lives, to survive like the wild ass in the desert!" 7 Because you trusted in your works and your treasures, you also shall be captured. Chemosh shall go into exile, his priests and princes with him. 8 The destroyer comes upon every city, not a city escapes; Ruined is the valley, wasted the plain, as the LORD has said. 9 Set up a memorial for Moab, for it is an utter wasteland; Its cities are turned into ruins where no one dwells. 10 (Cursed be he who does the LORD'S work remissly, cursed he who holds back his sword from blood.) 11 Moab has been tranquil from his youth, has rested upon his lees; He was not poured from one flask to another, he went not into exile. Thus he kept his taste, and his scent was not lost. 12 Hence, the days shall come, says the LORD, when I will send him coopers to turn him over; they shall empty his flasks and break his jars. 13 Chemosh shall disappoint Moab, as Israel was disappointed by Bethel in which they trusted. 14 How can you say, "We are heroes, men valiant in war"? 15 The ravager of Moab and his cities advances, the flower of his youth goes down to be slaughtered, says the King, the LORD of hosts by name. 16 Near at hand is Moab's ruin, his disaster hastens apace. 17 Mourn for him, all you his neighbors, all you who knew him well! Say: How the strong staff is broken, the glorious rod! 18 Come down from glory, sit on the ground, you that dwell in Dibon; Moab's ravager has come up against you, he has ruined your strongholds. 19 Stand by the wayside, watch closely, you that dwell in Aroer; Ask the man who flees, the woman who tries to escape: say to them, "What has happened?" 20 Moab is disgraced, yes, destroyed, howl and cry out; Publish it at the Arnon, Moab is ruined! 21 For judgment has come on the land of the plateau: on Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath, 22 on Dibon, Nebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23 on Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul, and Beth-meon, 24 on Kerioth and on Bozrah: on all the cities of Moab, far and near. 25 Moab's strength is broken, his might is shattered, says the LORD. 26 Because he boasted against the LORD, make Moab drunk so that he retches and vomits, and he too becomes a laughingstock. 27 Is Israel a laughingstock to you? Was she caught among thieves, that you shake your head whenever you speak of her? 28 Leave the cities, dwell in the crags, you that dwell in Moab. Be like a dove that nests out of reach on the edge of a chasm. 29 We have heard of the pride of Moab, pride beyond bounds: His loftiness, his pride, his scorn, his insolence of heart. 30 I know, says the LORD, his arrogance; liar in boast, liar in deed. 31 And so I wail over Moab, over all Moab I cry, over the men of Kir-heres I moan. 32 More than for Jazer I weep over you, vineyard of Sibmah. Your tendrils trailed down to the sea, as far as Jazer they stretched. Upon your harvest, upon your vintage, the ravager has fallen. 33 Joy and jubilation are at an end in the fruit gardens of the land of Moab. I drain the wine from the wine vats, the treader treads no more, the vintage shout is stilled. 34 The cry of Heshbon and Elealeh is heard as far as Jahaz; they call from Zoar to Horonaim, and to Eglath-shelishiyah, for even the waters of Nimrim turn into a desert. 35 I will leave no one in Moab, says the LORD, to offer a holocaust on the high place, or to burn incense to his gods. 36 Hence the wail of flutes for Moab is in my heart; for the men of Kir-heres the wail of flutes is in my heart: the wealth they acquired has perished. 37 Every head has been made bald, every beard shaved; every hand is gashed, and the loins of all are clothed in sackcloth. 38 On every roof of Moab and in all his squares there is mourning; I have shattered Moab like a pot that no one wants, says the LORD. 39 How terror seizes Moab, and wailing! How he turns his back in shame! Moab has become a laughingstock and a horror to all his neighbors! 40 For thus says the LORD: Behold, like an eagle he soars, spreads his wings over Moab. 41 Cities are taken, strongholds seized: On that day the hearts of Moab's heroes are like the heart of a woman in travail. 42 Moab shall be destroyed, no more a people, because he boasted against the LORD. 43 Terror, pit, and trap be upon you, people of Moab, says the LORD. 44 He who flees from the terror falls into the pit; He who climbs from the pit is caught in the trap; For I will bring these things upon Moab in the year of their punishment, says the LORD. 45 In Heshbon's shadow stop short the exhausted refugees; For fire breaks forth from Heshbon, and a blaze from the house of Sihon: It consumes the brow of Moab, the skull of the noisemakers. 46 Woe to you, O Moab, you are ruined, O people of Chemosh! Your sons are taken into exile, your daughters into captivity. 47 But I will change the lot of Moab in the days to come, says the LORD. Thus far the judgment on Moab. |
v 1-5. Nebo town, not mountain. Several of these towns of Moab are mentioned in other Bible studies and have changed hands, but they are doomed to destruction.
v 6-10. Moab would be destroyed from the Jordan valley to the mountains east, because she trusted in her own strength and her god, Chemosh. Nomadic tribes from the East would have been cursed if they had neglected to destroy Moab.
v 11-13. Moab had lived relatively peaceful, like wine waiting for 40 days of fermenting before being poured off the dregs in the bottom. Chemosh could not help.
v 14-17. Neighboring nations could mourn the slaughter of her warriors.
v 18-25. Jeremiah listed 11 cities, basically from north to south, to show that all of Moab would be destroyed. Moab’s horn and arm, symbols of strength will be broken.
v 26-28. She would move as a drunk in his vomit and be forced to hide in shame.
v 29-39. Her main problem was pride, and God would grieve over her sorrow. There would be mourning throughout the land, but idol worship would cease.
v 40-44. The Lord would swoop in like an eagle and none would be spared.
v 45-47. Moabites would die or be captured, but Moab restored in the Millennium.
