1 CONCERNING the Ammonites, thus saith the Lord; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities? |
1Concerning the Ammonites, thus sayth the Lord; hath Israel no sonnes? Hath he no heire? Why then doth their king inherit God, and his people dwell in his cities? 2Therfore behold, the dayes come, saith the Lord, that I will cause an alarme of warre to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites, and it shall be a desolate heape, and her daughters shall be burnt with fire: then shall Israel be heire vnto them that were his heires, saith the Lord. 3Howle, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry yee daughters of Rabbah, gird yee with sackcloth: lament and runne to and fro by the hedges: for their king shall goe into captiuitie: and his priests and his princes together. 4Wherfore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? That trusted in her treasures, saying; Who shall come vnto mee? 5Behold, I will bring a feare vpon thee, saith the Lord God of hostes, from all those that be about thee, and yee shall be driuen out euery man right forth, and none shal gather vp him that wandereth. 6And afterward I will bring againe the captiuitie of the children of Ammon, saith the Lord. 7 Concerning Edom thus saith the Lord of hosts, Is wisedome no more in Teman? is counsell perished from the prudent? is their wisedom vanished? 8Flee ye, turne backe, dwell deepe, O inhabitants of Dedan: for I will bring the calamitie of Esau vpon him, the time that I will visite him. 9If grape gatherers come to thee, would they not leaue some gleaning grapes? If theeues by night, they will destroy till they haue enough. 10But I haue made Esau bare, I haue vncouered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himselfe: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren and his neighbours, and he is not. 11Leaue thy fatherlesse children, I will preserue them aliue: and let thy widowes trust in me. 12For thus saith the Lord, Behold, they whose iudgement was not to drinke of the cup, haue assuredly drunken, and art thou he that shall altogether go vnpunished? thou shalt not go vnpunished, but thou shalt surely drinke of it. 13For I haue sworne by my selfe, saith the Lord, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproch, a waste, and a curse, and all the cities thereof shall be perpetuall wastes. 14I haue heard a rumor from the Lord, & an ambassadour is sent vnto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together & come against her, & rise vp to the battell. 15For lo, I wil make thee smal among the heathen, and despised among men. 16Thy terriblenesse hath deceiued thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rocke, that holdest the height of the hill: thogh thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee downe from thence, saith the Lord. 17Also Edom shalbe a desolation: euery one þt goeth by it shalbe astonished, and shall hisse at all the plagues thereof, 18As in the ouerthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord: no man shall abide there, neither shall a sonne of man dwell in it. 19Behold, he shal come vp like a lyon from the swelling of Iordane against the habitation of the strong: but I wil suddenly make him runne away from her, and who is a chosen man that I may appoynt ouer her? For who is like mee? And who will appoint me the time? Who is that shepheard that will stand before mee? 20Therfore heare the counsell of the Lord, that he hath taken against Edom, & his purposes that hee hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely the least of the flocke shall draw them out: surely hee shall make their habitations desolate with them. 21The earth is moued at the noise of their fall: at the crie, the noise thereof was heard in the red Sea. 22Behold, he shall come vp and flie as the eagle, and spread his wings ouer Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mightie men of Edom, be as the heart of a woman in her pangs. 23 Concerning Damascus, Hamath is confounded, & Arpad, for they haue heard euil tidings, they are faint hearted, there is sorrow on the sea, it can not be quiet. 24Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth her selfe to flee, and feare hath seised on her: anguish and sorrowes haue taken her as a woman in trauell. 25How is the citie of praise not left, the citie of my ioy? 26Therefore her yong men shal fall in her streets, and all the men of warre shall bee cut off in that day, saith the Lord of hosts. 27And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shal consume the palaces of Ben-hadad. 28 Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchad-rezzar king of Babylon shall smite, Thus saith the Lord: Arise ye, goe vp to Kedar, and spoile the men of the East. 29Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shal take to themselues their curtaines and all their vessels, and their camels, and they shal crie vnto them, Feare is on euery side. 30 Flee, get you farre off, dwell deepe, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith the Lord: for Nebuchad-rezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceiued a purpose against you. 31Arise, get you vp vnto the wealthy nation that dwelleth without care, saith the Lord, which haue neither gates nor barres, which dwell alone. 32And their camels shall be a bootie, and the multitude of their cattell a spoile, and I will scatter into all winds them that are in the vtmost corners, and I will bring their calamitie from all sides thereof, saith the Lord. 33And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for euer; there shall no man abide there, nor any sonne of man dwell in it. 34 The word of the Lord that came to Ieremiah the Prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reigne of Zedekiah king of Iudah, saying, 35Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, I will breake the bow of Elam, the chiefe of their might. 36And vpon Elam will I bring the foure windes from the foure quarters of heauen, and will scatter them towards all those windes, and there shall be no nation, whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come. 37For I will cause Elam to bee dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seeke their life: and I will bring euill vpon them, euen my fierce anger, saith the Lord, and I will send the sword after them, till I haue consumed them. 38And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the Lord. 39 But it shall come to passe in the later daies, that I wil bring againe the captiuitie of Elam, saith the Lord. |

1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus says the LORD: Has Israel no sons? has he no heir? Why then has Milcom disinherited Gad, why have his people settled in Gad's cities? 2 But the days are coming, says the LORD, when against Rabbah of the Ammonites I will sound the battle alarm; She shall become a mound of ruins, and her daughter cities shall be destroyed by fire. Israel shall inherit those who disinherited her, says the LORD. 3 Howl, Heshbon, for the ravager approaches, shriek, daughters of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth and mourn, run to and fro, gashing yourselves; For Milcom goes into exile along with his priests and captains. 4 Why do you glory in your strength, your ebbing strength, rebellious daughter? You who trust in your treasures, saying, "Who can come against me?" 5 I am bringing terror upon you, says the Lord GOD of hosts, from all round about you; You shall be scattered, each man in headlong flight, with no one to rally the fugitives. 6 But afterward I will change the lot of the Ammonites, says the LORD. 7 Concerning Edom, thus says the LORD of hosts: Is there no more wisdom in Teman, has counsel perished from the prudent, has their wisdom become corrupt? 8 Flee, retreat, hide in deep holes, you who live in Dedan: For I will bring destruction upon Esau when I come to punish him. 9 If vintagers came upon you, they would leave no gleanings; If thieves by night, they would destroy as they pleased. 10 So I myself will strip Esau; I will uncover his retreats so that he cannot hide. He is ruined: sons, and brothers, and neighbors, so that he is no more. 11 Leave your orphans behind, I will keep them alive; your widows, let them trust in me. 12 For thus says the LORD: Even those not sentenced to drink the cup must drink it! Shall you then go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished; you shall surely drink it. 13 By my own self I have sworn, says the LORD: Bozrah shall become an object of horror and a disgrace, a desolation and a curse; she and all her cities shall become ruins forever. 14 I have heard a report from the LORD, a herald has been sent among the nations: Gather together, move against her, rise up for battle. 15 Small will I make you among the nations, despised among men! 16 The terror you spread beguiled you, and your presumption of heart; You that live in rocky crags, that hold the heights of the hill: Though you build your nest high as the eagle, from there I will drag you down, says the LORD. 17 Edom shall become an object of horror. Every passer-by shall be appalled and catch his breath at all her wounds. 18 As when Sodom, Gomorrah, and their neighbors were overthrown, says the LORD, not a man shall dwell there: no one shall visit there. 19 As when a lion comes up from the thicket of Jordan to the permanent feeding grounds, So I, in an instant, will drive men off; and whom I choose I will establish there! For who is like me? who can call me to account? What shepherd can stand against me? 20 Therefore, hear the counsel of the LORD, which he has taken against Edom; Hear the plans he has made against those that live in Teman: They shall be dragged away, even the smallest sheep, their own pasture shall be aghast because of them. 21 At the noise of their fall the earth quakes, to the Red Sea the outcry is heard! 22 See! like an eagle he soars aloft, and spreads his wings over Bozrah; On that day the hearts of Edom's heroes shall be like the heart of a woman in travail.Concerning Damascus: 23 Hamath and Arpad are covered with shame, they have heard bad news; Worried, they toss like the sea which cannot rest. 24 Damascus is weakened, she turns to flee, panic has seized her. Distress and pangs take hold of her, like those of a woman in travail. 25 How can the city of glory be forsaken, the town of delight! 26 But now her young men shall fall in her streets, and all her warriors shall be stilled. On that day, says the LORD of hosts, 27 I will set fire to the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad. 28 Of Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, defeated by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, thus says the LORD: Rise up, attack Kedar, ravage the Easterners. 29 Their tents and herds shall be taken away, their tent curtains and all their goods; Their camels they shall carry off for themselves, and shout from upon them, "Terror on every side!" 30 Flee! leave your homes, hide in deep holes, you that live in Hazor, says the LORD; For counsel has been taken against you, a plan has been formed against you (Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon). 31 Rise up! set out against a nation that is at peace, that lives secure, says the LORD, That has no gates or bars, and dwells alone. 32 Their camels shall be your booty, their many herds your spoil; I will scatter to the winds those who shave their temples, from all sides I will bring ruin upon them, says the LORD. 33 Hazor shall become a haunt of jackals, a desert forever, Where no man lives, no human being stays. 34 The following word of the LORD against Elam came to the prophet Jeremiah at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah: 35 Thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the mainstay of their might. 36 I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four ends of the heavens: I will scatter them to all these winds, till there is no nation to which the outcasts of Elam shall not come. 37 I will break Elam before their foes, before those who seek their life; I will bring evil upon them, my burning wrath, says the LORD. I will send the sword to pursue them until I have completely made an end of them; 38 My throne I will set up in Elam and destroy from there king and princes, says the LORD. 39 But in the days to come I will change the lot of Elam, says the LORD. |
v 1-3. Ammonites, east of Jordan and north of Moab and Israel’s perpetual enemy was allied briefly against Babylon, but was traitorous, 40:14. They had possessed land of Israel, but they and their god Molech would be destroyed. (Ai not the one in Israel)
4-6. Ammon’s sin was pride in her productivity and self strength. They too would be killed or driven from their land, but the Lord will restore them in the Millennium.
v 7--13. Edom was south and east of the Dead Sea. Teman, in central Edom was noted for wisdom, Job 2:11. Dedanites to the south who lived in Edom were warned to flee. Edom, related to Israel, had treated them cruelly, so would be stripped bare. Verses 7-17 are very similar to Obadiah 8 and 9. Debated which was written first.
v 14-18. Edom had natural defenses and proud of strength, but the Lord would make her despised of her neighbors, and her destruction like Sodom and Gomorrah.
v 19-22. Like a lion, v 19, or an eagle, v 22, God would send armies to swoop in on Edom and drive her from her land, and no shepherd (king) of Edom could stand. Nabateans drove Edomites into southern Judah where they eventually became Idumeans and lost their national identity. They were not promised restoration.
v 23--27. The dynasty of Ben-hadad was cruel to Judah, and God sent Babylon in with destructive vengeance upon Damascus and Syria.
v 28,29. Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the tents and flocks of the nomads of Kedar.
v 30-33. The Arabians of Hazor were so confident in the desert that they had no gates or bars, so Nebuchadnezzar would plunder and scatter them.
v 34-39. Elam’s first war, Gen. 14 (modern Iran). Her archers caused trouble for Babylon, and later became part of the Persian empire that conquered Babylon, but they were later defeated by Alexander and scattered to all nations. Elamites heard the gospel, Acts. 2:9, so were saved, but full restoration may await the Millennium.
