KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel;

2And he said unto Aaron, Take thee a young calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer thembefore the LORD.

3And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying, Take ye a kid of the goats for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering;

4Also a bullock and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a meat offering mingled with oil: for to day the LORD will appear unto you.

5And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation: and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD.

6And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do: and the glory of the LORD shall appear unto you.

7And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sin offering, and thy burnt offering, and make an atonement for thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.

8Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself.

9And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar:

10But the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver of the sin offering, he burnt upon the altar; as the LORD commanded Moses.

11And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire without the camp.

12And he slew the burnt offering; and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled round about upon the altar.

13And they presented the burnt offering unto him, with the pieces thereof, and the head: and he burnt them upon the altar.

14And he did wash the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt offering on the altar.

15And he brought the people's offering, and took the goat, which wasthe sin offering for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first.

16And he brought the burnt offering, and offered it according to the manner.

17And he brought the meat offering, and took an handful thereof, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning.

18He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled upon the altar round about,

19And the fat of the bullock and of the ram, the rump, and that which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver:

20And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burnt the fat upon the altar:

21And the breasts and the right shoulder Aaron waved for a wave offering before the LORD; as Moses commanded.

22And Aaron lifted up his hand toward the people, and blessed them, and came down from offering of the sin offering, and the burnt offering, and peace offerings.

23And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people.

24And there came a fire out from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron and his sons, together with the elders of Israel,

2 and said to Aaron, "Take a calf for a sin offering and a ram for a holocaust, both without blemish, and offer them before the LORD.

3 Tell the elders of Israel, too: Take a he-goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb, both unblemished yearlings, for a holocaust,

4 and an ox and a ram for a peace offering, to sacrifice them before the LORD, along with a cereal offering mixed with oil; for today the LORD will reveal himself to you."

5 So they brought what Moses had ordered. When the whole community had come forward and stood before the LORD,

6 Moses said, "This is what the LORD orders you to do, that the glory of the LORD may be revealed to you.

7 Come up to the altar," Moses then told Aaron, "and offer your sin offering and your holocaust in atonement for yourself and for your family; then present the offering of the people in atonement for them, as the LORD has commanded."

8 Going up to the altar, Aaron first slaughtered the calf that was his own sin offering.

9 When his sons presented the blood to him, he dipped his finger in the blood and put it on the horns of the altar. The rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar.

10 He then burned on the altar the fat, the kidneys and the lobe of the liver that were taken from the sin offering, as the LORD had commanded Moses;

11 but the flesh and the hide he burned up in the fire outside the camp.

12 Then Aaron slaughtered his holocaust. When his sons brought him the blood, he splashed it on all sides of the altar.

13 They then brought him the pieces and the head of the holocaust, and he burned them on the altar.

14 Having washed the inner organs and the shanks, he burned these also with the holocaust on the altar.

15 Thereupon he had the people's offering brought up. Taking the goat that was for the people's sin offering, he slaughtered it and offered it up for sin as before.

16 Then he brought forward the holocaust, other than the morning holocaust, and offered it in the usual manner.

17 He then presented the cereal offering; taking a handful of it, he burned it on the altar.

18 Finally he slaughtered the ox and the ram, the peace offering of the people. When his sons brought him the blood, Aaron splashed it on all sides of the altar.

19 The portions of fat from the ox and from the ram, the fatty tail, the fatty membrane over the inner organs, the two kidneys, with the fat that is on them, and the lobe of the liver,

20 he placed on top of the breasts and burned them on the altar,

21 having first waved the breasts and the right legs as a wave offering before the LORD, in keeping with the LORD'S command to Moses.

22 Aaron then raised his hands over the people and blessed them. When he came down from offering the sin offering and holocaust and peace offering,

23 Moses and Aaron went into the meeting tent. On coming out they again blessed the people. Then the glory of the LORD was revealed to all the people.

24 Fire came forth from the LORD'S presence and consumed the holocaust and the remnants of the fat on the altar. Seeing this, all the people cried out and fell prostrate.

COMMENTARIE

v 1-4. The consecration has been completed and this is the big day in which Aaron is to begin his duties and the Lord will show his acceptance of all, v 24. Aaron and sons are already in the court, but Moses calls the elders of Israel to be present. Aaron was to immediately go to work. He had to procure the calf for his sin offering and a ram for his own burnt offering. This is the only place in Scripture where a young calf offering is mentioned, possibly a reminder of his golden calf. Now instead of Moses telling them, Aaron is to tell the elders who represented the people to bring a goat kid for a sin offering, a first year calf and lamb for a burnt offering, a ram, bullock for peace offerings and a meal offering mixed with oil. Aaron tells them that the Lord will appear to them.

v 5-7. As stated before, when it mentions all the congregation, surely only the elders represent them at the tabernacle, though thousands may wait outside nearby. Moses repeats to them that the glory of the Lord will appear. He tells Aaron to make his offerings for himself, then make the offerings for the people. Christ needed no offering for Himself, Hebrews

v 8-14. Aaron followed previous instructions including putting blood on the horns of the burnt altar, burning prescribed parts and burning skin and flesh outside camp.

v 15-22. Morning offerings had been made as usual, v 17 (burnt sacrifice and burnt offering are the same, see 1:3 and 4.), so these offerings would have been in the evening, perhaps 3 o’clock. The sin, burnt, and meal offerings are all placed on the altar to start them burning and the meal offering quickly burns. The bullock and ram for peace offerings for the congregation have the blood dashed around on the altar and the fat etc. put on the altar to burn. While they are getting started, Aaron blesses the people and leaves the altar.

v 23,24. Moses and Aaron then went into the tabernacle, perhaps to pray for the Lord to reveal Himself, came out and blessed the people, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all. At that moment, fire came out from the presence of the Lord, and snuffing out the slowly burning flames, became a consuming fire which ate up the sacrifices. The people gave a shout of joy, not fear, but fell before the Lord in awe and reverence.
