2Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

3Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

4Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

5And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

6And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

7And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.

8Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

9These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.

10And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:

11They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

12Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

13And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,

14And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;

15Every raven after his kind;

16And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,

17And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,

18And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,

19And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

20All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

21Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;

22Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.

23But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.

24And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even.

25And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

26The carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.

27And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.

32And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed.

33And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.

34Of all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every suchvessel shall be unclean.

35And every thing whereupon any part of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether it be oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you.

36Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.

37And if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.

38But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.

39And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even.

40And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

41And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.

42Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon allfour, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.

43Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

44For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

45For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

46This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:.

47To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.

24And for these ye shalbe vncleane: whosoeuer toucheth the carkasse of them, shall be vncleane vntill the euen.

32And vpon whatsoeuer any of them, when they are dead, doeth fall, it shalbe vncleane, whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skinne, or sacke, whatsoeuer vessell it be, wherein any worke is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be vncleane vntill the Euen; so it shalbe cleansed.

44For I am the Lord your God: yee shall therefore sanctifie your selues, and ye shall be holy, for I am holy: neither shall ye defile your selues with any maner of creeping thing that creepeth vpon the earth.

45For I am the Lord that bringeth you vp out of the land of Egypt to be your God: ye shal therefore be holy, for I am holy.

46This is the law of the beasts, and of the foule, and of euery liuing creature that moueth in the waters, and of euerie creature that creepeth vpon the earth:

47To make a difference betweene the vncleane and the cleane, & betweene the beast that may be eaten, and the beast that may not be eaten.

4 But you shall not eat any of the following that only chew the cud or only have hoofs: the camel, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you;

21 But of the various winged insects that walk on all fours you may eat those that have jointed legs for leaping on the ground;

22 hence of these you may eat the following: the various kinds of locusts, the various kinds of grasshoppers, the various kinds of katydids, and the various kinds of crickets.

23 All other winged insects that have four legs are loathsome for you.

24 "Such is the uncleanness that you contract, that everyone who touches their dead bodies shall be unclean until evening,

25 and everyone who picks up any part of their dead bodies shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening.

26 All hoofed animals that are not cloven-footed or do not chew the cud are unclean for you; everyone who touches them becomes unclean.

27 Of the various quadrupeds, all those that walk on paws are unclean for you; everyone who touches their dead bodies shall be unclean until evening,

28 and everyone who picks up their dead bodies shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening. Such is their uncleanness for you.

29 "Of the creatures that swarm on the ground, the following are unclean for you: the rat, the mouse, the various kinds of lizards,

30 the gecko, the chameleon, the agama, the skink, and the mole.

31 Among the various swarming creatures, these are unclean for you. Everyone who touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening.

32 Everything on which one of them falls when dead becomes unclean. Any such article that men use, whether it be an article of wood, cloth, leather or goat hair, must be put in water and remain unclean until evening, when it again becomes clean.

33 Should any of these creatures fall into a clay vessel, everything in it becomes unclean, and the vessel itself you must break.

34 Any solid food that was in contact with water, and any liquid that men drink, in any such vessel become unclean.

35 Any object on which one of their dead bodies falls, becomes unclean; if it is an oven or a jar-stand, this must be broken to pieces; they are unclean and shall be treated as unclean by you.

36 However, a spring or a cistern for collecting water remains clean; but whoever touches the dead body becomes unclean.

37 Any sort of cultivated grain remains clean even though one of their dead bodies falls on it;

38 but if the grain has become moistened, it becomes unclean when one of these falls on it.

39 "When one of the animals that you could otherwise eat, dies of itself, anyone who touches its dead body shall be unclean until evening;

40 and anyone who eats of its dead body shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening; so also, anyone who removes its dead body shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening.

41 "All the creatures that swarm on the ground are loathsome and shall not be eaten.

42 Whether it crawls on its belly, goes on all fours, or has many legs, you shall eat no swarming creature: they are loathsome.

43 Do not make yourselves loathsome or unclean with any swarming creature through being contaminated by them.

44 For I, the LORD, am your God; and you shall make and keep yourselves holy, because I am holy. You shall not make yourselves unclean, then, by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground.

45 Since I, the LORD, brought you up from the land of Egypt that I might be your God, you shall be holy, because I am holy.

46 "This is the law for animals and birds and for all the creatures that move about in the water or swarm on the ground,

47 that you may distinguish between the clean and the unclean, between creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten."

These chapters contain laws of cleanliness and holiness between a holy God and a holy people. The specific laws are void to today’s believers, Acts 10:15 “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.” They are superseded by the underlying spiritual principal which relates to every area of our living and is just as binding. 1 Cor. 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
Chapter 11 has to do with ceremonial clean and unclean foods. The basic rule is that whatever parts the hoof and chews the cud is clean. If it only did one or the other it was not. In the water they could eat that which had fins and scales, if it did not it was an abomination, unfit. Among birds, winged insects and creeping things those which are clean or unclean are specifically named. Basically, that which feasted on refuse and carrion were labeled unclean, and from a diet standpoint of that day, probably were somewhat of a health risk. v 27. One would be unclean if they even petted a dog or cat, which may have some bearing on Jews revulsion of Gentiles and calling them “dogs”.

v 36. Ranges can mean ranks of soldiers or buildings and dwellings, but the original here means the hearth, stove or furnace over which pots cook.

The insects allowed jumped as well as flew. Rules are also given regarding contact with that which is unclean. This is summarized in verses 46 and 47, but the key words and intent is, “ye shall be holy for I am holy”.
