Leviticus 22

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me: I amthe LORD.

3Say unto them, Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.

4What man soever of the seed of Aaron is a leper, or hath a running issue; he shall not eat of the holy things, until he be clean. And whoso toucheth any thing that is unclean by the dead, or a man whose seed goeth from him;

5Or whosoever toucheth any creeping thing, whereby he may be made unclean, or a man of whom he may take uncleanness, whatsoever uncleanness he hath;

6The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even, and shall not eat of the holy things, unless he wash his flesh with water.

7And when the sun is down, he shall be clean, and shall afterward eat of the holy things; because it is his food.

8That which dieth of itself, or is torn with beasts, he shall not eat to defile himself therewith: I am the LORD.

9They shall therefore keep mine ordinance, lest they bear sin for it, and die therefore, if they profane it: I the LORD do sanctify them.

10There shall no stranger eat of the holy thing: a sojourner of the priest, or an hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing.

11But if the priest buy any soul with his money, he shall eat of it, and he that is born in his house: they shall eat of his meat.

12If the priest's daughter also be married unto a stranger, she may not eat of an offering of the holy things.

13But if the priest's daughter be a widow, or divorced, and have no child, and is returned unto her father's house, as in her youth, she shall eat of her father's meat: but there shall no stranger eat thereof.

14And if a man eat of the holy thing unwittingly, then he shall put the fifth part thereof unto it, and shall give it unto the priest with the holy thing.

15And they shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, which they offer unto the LORD;

16Or suffer them to bear the iniquity of trespass, when they eat their holy things: for I the LORD do sanctify them.

17And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

18Speak unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them, Whatsoever he be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers in Israel, that will offer his oblation for all his vows, and for all his freewill offerings, which they will offer unto the LORD for a burnt offering;

19Ye shall offer at your own will a male without blemish, of the beeves, of the sheep, or of the goats.

20But whatsoever hath a blemish, that shall ye not offer: for it shall not be acceptable for you.

21And whosoever offereth a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD to accomplish his vow, or a freewill offering in beeves or sheep, it shall be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein.

22Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not offer these unto the LORD, nor make an offering by fire of them upon the altar unto the LORD.

23Either a bullock or a lamb that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a freewill offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted.

24Ye shall not offer unto the LORD that which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut; neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land.

25Neither from a stranger's hand shall ye offer the bread of your God of any of these; because their corruption is in them, and blemishes be in them: they shall not be accepted for you.

26And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

27When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat, is brought forth, then it shall be seven days under the dam; and from the eighth day and thenceforth it shall be accepted for an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

28And whether it be cow or ewe, ye shall not kill it and her young both in one day.

29And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving unto the LORD, offer it at your own will.

30On the same day it shall be eaten up; ye shall leave none of it until the morrow: I am the LORD.

31Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the LORD.

32Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am the LORD which hallow you,

33That brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.

21And whosoeuer offereth a sacrifice of peace offerings vnto the Lord, to accomplish his vow, or a free will offring in beeues or sheepe, it shalbe perfect, to be accepted: there shall be no blemish therein.

22Blind, or broken, or maimed, or hauing a wenne, or scuruie, or scabbed, ye shal not offer these vnto the Lord, nor make an offring by fire of them vpon the Altar vnto the Lord.

23Either a bullocke, or a lambe that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a free will offring: but for a vow it shal not be accepted.

26 And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,

27When a bullocke, or a sheepe, or a goat is brought forth, then it shall bee seuen dayes vnder the damme, and from the eight day and thencefoorth, it shal be accepted for an offering made by fire vnto the Lord.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 The LORD said to Moses,

2 "Tell Aaron and his sons to respect the sacred offerings which the Israelites consecrate to me; else they will profane my holy name. I am the LORD.

3 "Tell them: If any one of you, or of your descendants in any future generation, dares, while he is in a state of uncleanness, to draw near the sacred offerings which the Israelites consecrate to the LORD, such a one shall be cut off from my presence. I am the LORD.

4 "No descendant of Aaron who is stricken with leprosy, or who suffers from a flow, may eat of these sacred offerings, unless he again becomes clean. Moreover, if anyone touches a person who has become unclean by contact with a corpse, or if anyone has had an emission of seed,

5 or if anyone touches any swarming creature or any man whose uncleanness, of whatever kind it may be, is contagious,

6 the one who touches such as these shall be unclean until evening and may not eat of the sacred portions until he has first bathed his body in water,

7 then, when the sun sets, he again becomes clean. Only then may he eat of the sacred offerings, which are his food.

8 He shall not make himself unclean by eating of any animal that has died of itself or has been killed by wild beasts. I am the LORD.

9 "They shall keep my charge and not do wrong in this matter; else they will die for their profanation. I am the LORD who have consecrated them.

10 "Neither a lay person nor a priest's tenant or hired servant may eat of any sacred offering.

11 But a slave whom a priest acquires by purchase or who is born in his house may eat of his food.

12 A priest's daughter who is married to a layman may not eat of the sacred contributions.

13 But if a priest's daughter is widowed or divorced and, having no children, returns to her father's house, she may then eat of her father's food as in her youth. No layman, however, may eat of it.

14 If such a one eats of a sacred offering through inadvertence, he shall make restitution to the priest for the sacred offering, with an increment of one fifth of the amount.

15 The sacred offerings which the Israelites contribute to the LORD the priests shall not allow to be profaned

16 nor in the eating of the sacred offering shall they bring down guilt that must be punished; it is I, the LORD, who make them sacred."

17 The LORD said to Moses,

18 "Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites, and tell them: When anyone of the house of Israel, or any alien residing in Israel, who wishes to offer a sacrifice, brings a holocaust as a votive offering or as a free-will offering to the LORD,

19 if it is to be acceptable, the ox or sheep or goat that he offers must be an unblemished male.

20 You shall not offer one that has any defect, for such a one would not be acceptable for you.

21 When anyone presents a peace offering to the LORD from the herd or the flock in fulfillment of a vow, or as a free-will offering, if it is to find acceptance, it must be unblemished; it shall not have any defect.

22 One that is blind or crippled or maimed, or one that has a running sore or mange or ringworm, you shall not offer to the LORD; do not put such an animal on the altar as an oblation to the LORD.

23 An ox or a sheep that is in any way ill-proportioned or stunted you may indeed present as a free-will offering, but it will not be acceptable as a votive offering.

24 One that has its testicles bruised or crushed or torn out or cut off you shall not offer to the LORD. You shall neither do this in your own land

25 nor receive from a foreigner any such animals to offer up as the food of your God; since they are deformed or defective, they will not be acceptable for you."

26 The LORD said to Moses,

27 "When an ox or a lamb or a goat is born, it shall remain with its mother for seven days; only from the eighth day onward will it be acceptable, to be offered as an oblation to the LORD.

28 You shall not slaughter an ox or a sheep on one and the same day with its young.

29 Whenever you offer a thanksgiving sacrifice to the LORD, so offer it that it may be acceptable for you;

30 it must, therefore, be eaten on the same day; none of it shall be left over until the next day. I am the LORD.

31 "Be careful to observe the commandments which I, the LORD, give you,

32 and do not profane my holy name; in the midst of the Israelites I, the LORD, must be held as sacred. It is I who made you sacred

33 and led you out of the land of Egypt, that I, the LORD, might be your God."

COMMENTARIE

V 1-9. This is another self explanatory portion defining separation of the priests, with the specific warning in v 3, that any of them approaching the holy things in their uncleanness would be cut off from God’s presence, death.

v 10-13 defines who can eat of the holy things and who can not.

v 14-16. Others eating a holy thing unwittingly must replace it plus 20%.

v 15,16. It was the priests responsibility to see that such a violation did not occur.

v 17-25. Anyone offering a vow or freewill offering must bring a perfect male without blemish, whether their own or obtained from a foreigner. The only exception being, a bullock or lamb for a free will offering could have certain defects, v 23 & 7:16.

v 26-33. Sacrificial animals could not be offered until they were at least 8 days old, and could not be killed on the same day as their mothers. Thanksgiving offerings were totally voluntary, but must be eaten that same day, v 30 and 7:16. They were to heartily obey these commands so they might by holy as He is holy, 20:7.
