KING JAMES BIBLE

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.

3Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

4Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I amthe LORD your God.

5And if ye offer a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD, ye shall offer it at your own will.

6It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if ought remain until the third day, it shall be burnt in the fire.

7And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is abominable; it shall not be accepted.

8Therefore every one that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the hallowed thing of the LORD: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

9And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.

10And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God.

11Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.

12And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

13Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

14Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD.

15Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.

16Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I amthe LORD.

17Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.

18Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

19Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

20And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.

21And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, even a ram for a trespass offering.

22And the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath done: and the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him.

23And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you: it shall not be eaten of.

24But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy to praise the LORD withal.

25And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the LORD your God.

26Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.

27Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

28Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

29Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.

30Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.

31Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

32Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.

33And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him.

34But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

35Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure.

36Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt.

37Therefore shall ye observe all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: I am the LORD.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 The LORD said to Moses,

2 "Speak to the whole Israelite community and tell them: Be holy, for I, the LORD your God, am holy.

3 Revere your mother and father, and keep my sabbaths. I, the LORD, am your God.

4 "Do not turn aside to idols, nor make molten gods for yourselves. I, the LORD, am your God.

5 "When you sacrifice your peace offering to the LORD, if you wish it to be acceptable,

6 it must be eaten on the very day of your sacrifice or on the following day. Whatever is left over until the third day shall be burned up in the fire.

7 If any of it is eaten on the third day, the sacrifice will be unacceptable as refuse;

8 whoever eats of it then shall pay the penalty for having profaned what is sacred to the LORD. Such a one shall be cut off from his people.

9 "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not be so thorough that you reap the field to its very edge, nor shall you glean the stray ears of grain.

10 Likewise, you shall not pick your vineyard bare, nor gather up the grapes that have fallen. These things you shall leave for the poor and the alien. I, the LORD, am your God.

11 "You shall not steal. You shall not lie or speak falsely to one another.

12 You shall not swear falsely by my name, thus profaning the name of your God. I am the LORD.

13 "You shall not defraud or rob your neighbor. You shall not withhold overnight the wages of your day laborer.

14 You shall not curse the deaf, or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but you shall fear your God. I am the LORD.

15 "You shall not act dishonestly in rendering judgment. Show neither partiality to the weak nor deference to the mighty, but judge your fellow men justly.

16 You shall not go about spreading slander among your kinsmen; nor shall you stand by idly when your neighbor's life is at stake. I am the LORD.

17 "You shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your fellow man, do not incur sin because of him.

18 Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

19 "Keep my statutes: do not breed any of your domestic animals with others of a different species; do not sow a field of yours with two different kinds of seed; and do not put on a garment woven with two different kinds of thread.

20 "If a man has carnal relations with a female slave who has already been living with another man but has not yet been redeemed or given her freedom, they shall be punished but not put to death, because she is not free.

21 The man, moreover, shall bring to the entrance of the meeting tent a ram as his guilt offering to the LORD.

22 With this ram the priest shall make atonement before the LORD for the sin he has committed, and it will be forgiven him.

23 "When you come into the land and plant any fruit tree there, first look upon its fruit as if it were uncircumcised. For three years, while its fruit remains uncircumcised, it may not be eaten.

24 In the fourth year, however, all of its fruit shall be sacred to the LORD as a thanksgiving feast to him.

25 Not until the fifth year may you eat its fruit. Thus it will continue its yield for you. I, the LORD, am your God.

26 "Do not eat meat with the blood still in it. Do not practice divination or soothsaying.

27 Do not clip your hair at the temples, nor trim the edges of your beard.

28 Do not lacerate your bodies for the dead, and do not tattoo yourselves. I am the LORD.

29 "You shall not degrade your daughter by making a prostitute of her; else the land will become corrupt and full of lewdness.

30 Keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary. I am the LORD.

31 "Do not go to mediums or consult fortune-tellers, for you will be defiled by them. I, the LORD, am your God.

32 "Stand up in the presence of the aged, and show respect for the old; thus shall you fear your God. I am the LORD.

33 "When an alien resides with you in your land, do not molest him.

34 You shall treat the alien who resides with you no differently than the natives born among you; have the same love for him as for yourself; for you too were once aliens in the land of Egypt. I, the LORD, am your God.

35 "Do not act dishonestly in using measures of length or weight or capacity.

36 You shall have a true scale and true weights, an honest ephah and an honest hin. I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

37 Be careful, then, to observe all my statutes and decrees. I am the LORD."

COMMENTARIE

V 1,2. The purpose of these regulations is a call to holiness.

v 3,4. Holiness begins in the home, honoring parents, Ex. 20:12; keeping the sabbath, Ex. 20:8, and avoiding idolatry, Ex. 20:3-5.

v 5-8. See more on peace offering in Lev. 3 and 7. To violate this is to be cut off.

v 9,10. Leaving some for gleaning provided for the poor. See book of Ruth.

v 11. Stealing, slick deals and lying prohibited generally and in business practice.

v 12. False swearing and oaths are the important issue. Matt. 5:34 says swear not at all, but an oath of confirmation is acceptable in God’s sight, Ex. 22:11 and Heb. 6:16. Also Paul said in 1 Thess. 2:5 “God is my witness”. In Deut. 6:23 God swore to give land to Israel, and in Deut. they were commanded to swear by His name.

v 13. This was important for day laborers; today's wages are to be paid when due.

v 14. Some people actually do such sadistic things as well as make fun of them.

v 15-18. Each of these is important but self explanatory.

v 18 The highlights of the Mosaic law. To the poor great consideration was shown. Wages were paid day to day. Loans and gifts were to be made to the needy. Gleaning were left in the fields for the poor after harvest. Unceasing emphasis is place on kindness to strangers, widows, and orphans.

v 19. Several of the things here are special for a pure Israel, but not for us. Cross breeding, hybridization and blending materials are good and proper for our society.

v 20-22. Immorality with a slave girl not freed is punishable to both, but not death.

V 20 Concubinage, Polygamy, Divorce, Slavery were allowed, but greatly restricted Deut 21:15 ; 24:1-4 ; Exodus 21:2-11 ; Exod 21:2-11 What existed in surrounding nations Moses' law lifted Marriage to a far higher level. Never existing on a large scale among the Jews Slavery was hedged around with humane considerations, nor with such cruelties as prevalent in Egypt, Assyria, Greece, Rome, and other nations.

v 23-25. The first years fruits would be insignificant and uneaten, but the fourth year would be suitable for a first fruits offering unto the Lord as other first fruits are.

v 26-31. These all set the people of God away from the heathen of the land they were entering. Recall Saul’s violation concerning familiar spirits, 1 Sam. 28:7,8.

v 32-36. Respect for aged, compassion for resident aliens and honest dealings.

v 37. This sums up need of obedience regarding all things in this chapter.
