Ezekiel 02

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 AND he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
2 And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.
3 And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
4 For they are impudent children and stiffhearted. I do send thee unto them; and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God.
5 And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.
6 And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.
7 And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: for they are most rebellious.
8 But thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious like that rebellious house: open thy mouth, and eat that I give thee.
9 And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein;
10 And he spread it before me; and it was written within and without: and there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 Son of man, stand up! I wish to speak with you.

2 As he spoke to me, spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking

3 say to me: Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their fathers have revolted against me to this very day.

4 Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you. But you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD!

5 And whether they heed or resist - for they are a rebellious house - they shall know that a prophet has been among them.

6 But as for you, son of man, fear neither them nor their words when they contradict you and reject you, and when you sit on scorpions. Neither fear their words nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.

7 (But speak my words to them, whether they heed or resist, for they are rebellious.)

8 As for you, son of man, obey me when I speak to you: be not rebellious like this house of rebellion, but open your mouth and eat what I shall give you.

9 It was then I saw a hand stretched out to me, in which was a written scroll

10 which he unrolled before me. It was covered with writing front and back, and written on it was: Lamentation and wailing and woe!

COMMENTARIE

v 1,2. “Son of man” indicates an actual individual man. The Lord calls Ezekiel that 93 times. Chris, the Son of God, referred to Himself also by that human term about 80 times in the Gospels. When God told Ezekiel to stand, He enabled him to stand.

v 3-5. Ezekiel is assigned a difficult task because the people are rebellious, but whether they respond or not, they will know they heard it from a prophet of the Lord God. Ezekiel uses that term 217 times. It is used only 103 more times in the OT.

v 6,7. God warned Ezekiel this was going to be dangerous but not to be afraid.

v 8-10. God had given him the visions of His glory to motivate him to speak, now He is going to give him the message to speak. The hand of the One who spoke, the Lord, spread out a scroll with so much sadness to tell it was written on both sides.
