AGAIN in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, |
1Againe in the ninth yeere, in the tenth moneth, in the tenth day of the moneth, the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying; 2Sonne of man, Write thee the name of the day, euen of this same day: the king of Babylon set himselfe against Ierusalem this same day. 3And vtter a parable vnto the rebellious house, and say vnto them, Thus sayth the Lord God, Set on a pot, set it on, and also powre water into it. 4Gather the pieces thereof into it, euen euery good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones. 5Take the choice of the flocke, and burne also the bones vnder it, and make it boyle well, and let him seethe the bones of it therein. 6 Wherefore thus sayth the Lord God, Woe to the bloodie citie, to the pot whose scumme is therein, and whose scumme is not gone out of it; bring it out piece by piece, let no lot fall vpon it. 7For her blood is in the middest of her: she set it vpon the toppe of a rocke, she powred it vpon the ground to couer it with dust: 8That it might cause furie to come vp to take vengeance: I haue set her blood vpon the top of a rocke, that it should not be couered. 9Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Woe to the bloody citie, I will euen make the pile for fire, great. 10Heape on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burnt. 11Then set it empty vpon the coales thereof, that the brasse of it may be hot and may burne, and that the filthinesse of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed. 12She hath wearied herselfe with lies, and her great scumme went not forth out of her: her scumme shall be in the fire. 13In thy filthinesse is lewdnesse, because I haue purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthinesse any more, till I haue caused my fury to rest vpon thee. 14I the Lord haue spoken it, it shall come to passe, and I will doe it, I will not goe backe, neither will I spare, neither will I repent, according to thy wayes and according to thy doings, shall they iudge thee, saith the Lord God. 15 Also the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying; 16Sonne of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourne, nor weepe, neither shall thy teares runne downe. 17Forbeare to crie, make no mourning for the dead, bind the tire of thine head vpon thee, and put on thy shooes vpon thy feete, and couer not thy lips, and eate not the bread of men. 18So I spake vnto the people in the morning, and at euen my wife died, and I did in the morning as I was commanded. 19 And the people said vnto me; Wilt thou not tell vs what these things are to vs, that thou doest so? 20Then I answered them, The word of the Lord came vnto me, saying; 21Speake vnto the house of Israel; Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will prophane my sanctuarie, the excellencie of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soule pitieth; and your sonnes and your daughters, whom yee haue left, shall fall by the sword. 22And yee shall doe as I haue done: yee shall not couer your lips, nor eate the bread of men. 23And your tires shall be vpon your heads, and your shooes vpon your feet: yee shall not mourne nor weepe, but yee shall pine away for your iniquities, and mourne one towards an other. 24Thus Ezekiel is vnto you a signe: according to all that he hath done, shall yee doe: and when this commeth, yee shall know that I am the Lord God. 25Also thou sonne of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the ioy of their glorie, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sonnes and their daughters; 26That he that escapeth in that day, shall come vnto thee, to cause thee to heare it with thine eares? 27In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped, and thou shalt speake & be no more dumbe, and thou shalt be a signe vnto them, and they shall know that I am the Lord. |

1 On the tenth day of the tenth month, in the ninth year, the word of the LORD came to me: 2 Son of man, write down this date today, for this very day the king of Babylon has invested Jerusalem. 3 Propose this parable to the rebellious house: Thus says the Lord GOD: Set up the pot, set it up, then pour in some water. 4 Put in it pieces of meat, all good pieces: thigh and shoulder; Fill it with the choicest joints 5 taken from the pick of the flock. Then pile the wood beneath it; bring to a boil these pieces and the joints that are in it. 6 Take out its pieces, one by one, without casting lots for it. Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the bloody city, a pot containing rust, whose rust has not been removed. 7 For the blood she shed is in her midst; she poured it on the bare rock; she did not pour it out on the earth, to be covered with dust. 8 To work up my wrath, to excite my vengeance, she put her blood on the bare rock, not to be covered. 9 Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD: I, too, will heap up a great bonfire, 10 piling on wood and kindling the fire, Till the meat has been cooked, till the broth has boiled. 11 Then I will set the pot empty on the coals till its metal glows red hot, till the impurities in it melt, and its rust disappears. 12 Yet not even with fire will its great rust be removed. 13 Because you have sullied yourself with lewdness when I would have purified you, and you refused to be purified of your uncleanness, therefore you shall not be purified until I wreak my fury on you. 14 I, the LORD, have spoken; it is coming, for I will bring it about without fail. I will not have pity nor repent. By your conduct and your deeds you shall be judged, says the Lord GOD. 15 Thus the word of the LORD came to me: 16 Son of man, by a sudden blow I am taking away from you the delight of your eyes, but do not mourn or weep or shed any tears. 17 Groan in silence, make no lament for the dead, bind on your turban, put your sandals on your feet, do not cover your beard, and do not eat the customary bread. 18 That evening my wife died, and the next morning I did as I had been commanded. 19 Then the people asked me, "Will you not tell us what all these things that you are doing mean for us?" I therefore spoke to the people that morning, 20 saying to them: Thus the word of the LORD came to me: 21 Say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord GOD: I will now desecrate my sanctuary, the stronghold of your pride, the delight of your eyes, the desire of your soul. The sons and daughters you left behind shall fall by the sword. 24 Ezekiel shall be a sign for you: all that he did you shall do when it happens. Thus you shall know that I am the LORD. 22 You shall do as I have done, not covering your beards nor eating the customary bread. 23 Your turbans shall remain on your heads, your sandals on your feet. You shall not mourn or weep, but you shall rot away because of your sins and groan one to another. 25 As for you, son of man, truly, on the day I take away from them their bulwark, their glorious joy, the delight of their eyes, the desire of their soul, and the pride of their hearts, their sons and daughters, 26 that day the fugitive will come to you, that you may hear it for yourself; 27 that day your mouth shall be opened and you shall be dumb no longer. Thus you shall be a sign to them, and they shall know that I am the LORD. |
v 1,2. Ezekiel was to write this day, Jan. 15, 588 BC, as a day of national calamity for Judah. So significant it was also recorded 2 Ki. 25:1 and Jer. 39:1; 52:4. This is the day Ezekiel prophesied for four years, the day Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem. v 3-5. Contrary to false prophets of chapter 11, Jerusalem is the pot of destruction
v 6-14. The scum rising was like the blood of the innocent in Jerusalem calling out for vengeance. The people, meat in the pot, will be slaughtered and the pot, the city of Jerusalem, purged with fire because God had waited long enough.
v 15-18. Ezekiel’s wife would die, but he was only to grieve silently, as captives. In the morning he told the people about his vision and in the evening his wife died. (Apparently God allowed him temporary voice.)
v 19-24. Because of his many object lessons, the people knew this had national significance, so he explained. As his delight died, their delight, Jerusalem was dying. This was devastating after the encouraging words of the false prophets, but like him, they were to simply pine away in sorrow, with all their hopes dashed. As in v 17, The priests were not to remove priestly bonnets, tires, and the common people were not to put on black veils to cover their heads. They were not to cover the under part of the face, particularly mustache area, as a sign of mourning, or go barefoot, or eat food brought to those who mourn.
v 25-27. When an escapee reached them with the confirming news of the fall of Jerusalem, see 33:21-23 for that, Ezekiel’s part time dumbness that God had placed upon him since 3:25-27, would be removed. He had been silent 7 or 8 years, but once his prophecy was proven true, he could preach freely again.
