KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

1 Now these are the names of the tribes. From the north end to the coast of the way of Hethlon, as one goeth to Hamath, Hazarenan, the border of Damascus northward, to the coast of Hamath; for these are his sides east and west; a portion for Dan.

2 And by the border of Dan, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Asher.

3 And by the border of Asher, from the east side even unto the west side, a portion for Naphtali.

4 And by the border of Naphtali, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Manasseh.

5 And by the border of Manasseh, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Ephraim.

6 And by the border of Ephraim, from the east side even unto the west side, a portion for Reuben.

7 And by the border of Reuben, from the east side unto the west side, a portion for Judah.

8 And by the border of Judah, from the east side unto the west side, shall be the offering which ye shall offer of five and twenty thousand reeds in breadth, and in length as one of the other parts, from the east side unto the west side: and the sanctuary shall be in the midst of it.

9 The oblation that ye shall offer unto the Lord shall be of five and twenty thousand in length, and of ten thousand in breadth.

10 And for them, even for the priests, shall be this holy oblation; toward the north five and twenty thousand in length, and toward the west ten thousand in breadth, and toward the east ten thousand in breadth, and toward the south five and twenty thousand in length: and the sanctuary of the Lord shall be in the midst thereof.

11 It shall be for the priests that are sanctified of the sons of Zadok; which have kept my charge, which went not astray when the children of Israel went astray, as the Levites went astray.

12 And this oblation of the land that is offered shall be unto them a thing most holy by the border of the Levites.

13 And over against the border of the priests the Levites shall have five and twenty thousand in length, and ten thousand in breadth: all the length shall be five and twenty thousand, and the breadth ten thousand.

14 And they shall not sell of it, neither exchange, nor alienate the firstfruits of the land: for it is holy unto the Lord.

15 And the five thousand, that are left in the breadth over against the five and twenty thousand, shall be a profane place for the city, for dwelling, and for suburbs: and the city shall be in the midst thereof.

16 And these shall be the measures thereof; the north side four thousand and five hundred, and the south side four thousand and five hundred, and on the east side four thousand and five hundred, and the west side four thousand and five hundred.

17 And the suburbs of the city shall be toward the north two hundred and fifty, and toward the south two hundred and fifty, and toward the east two hundred and fifty, and toward the west two hundred and fifty.

18 And the residue in length over against the oblation of the holy portion shall be ten thousand eastward, and ten thousand westward: and it shall be over against the oblation of the holy portion; and the increase thereof shall be for food unto them that serve the city.

19 And they that serve the city shall serve it out of all the tribes of Israel.

20 All the oblation shall be five and twenty thousand by five and twenty thousand: ye shall offer the holy oblation foursquare, with the possession of the city.

21 And the residue shall be for the prince, on the one side and on the other of the holy oblation, and of the possession of the city, over against the five and twenty thousand of the oblation toward the east border, and westward over against the five and twenty thousand toward the west border, over against the portions for the prince: and it shall be the holy oblation; and the sanctuary of the house shall be in the midst thereof.

22 Moreover from the possession of the Levites, and from the possession of the city, being in the midst of that which is the prince's, between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin, shall be for the prince.

23 As for the rest of the tribes, from the east side unto the west side, Benjamin shall have a portion.

24 And by the border of Benjamin, from the east side unto the west side, Simeon shall have a portion.

25 And by the border of Simeon, from the east side unto the west side, Issachar a portion.

26 And by the border of Issachar, from the east side unto the west side, Zebulun a portion.

27 And by the border of Zebulun, from the east side unto the west side, Gad a portion.

28 And by the border of Gad, at the south side southward, the border shall be even from Tamar unto the waters of strife in Kadesh, and to the river toward the great sea.

29 This is the land which ye shall divide by lot unto the tribes of Israel for inheritance, and these are their portions, saith the Lord God.

30 And these are the goings out of the city on the north side, four thousand and five hundred measures.

31 And the gates of the city shall be after the names of the tribes of Israel: three gates northward; one gate of Reuben, one gate of Judah, one gate of Levi.

32 And at the east side four thousand and five hundred: and three gates; and one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan.

33 And at the south side four thousand and five hundred measures: and three gates; one gate of Simeon, one gate of Issachar, one gate of Zebulun.

34 At the west side four thousand and five hundred, with their three gates; one gate of Gad, one gate of Asher, one gate of Naphtali.

35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The Lord is there.

1 This is the list of the tribes. Dan: at the northern extremity, adjoining Hamath, all along from the approaches to Hethlon through Labo of Hamath to Hazar-enon, on the northerly border with Damascus, with his possession reaching from the eastern to the western boundary.

2 Asher: on the frontier of Dan, from the eastern to the western boundary.

3 Naphtali: on the frontier of Asher, from the eastern to the western boundary.

4 Manasseh: on the frontier of Naphtali, from the eastern to the western boundary.

5 Ephraim: on the frontier of Manasseh, from the eastern to the western boundary.

6 Reuben: on the frontier of Ephraim, from the eastern to the western boundary.

7 Judah: on the frontier of Reuben, from the eastern to the western boundary.

8 On the frontier of Judah, from the eastern to the western boundary there shall be the tract which you shall set apart, twenty-five thousand cubits from north to south, and as wide as one of the tribal portions from the eastern to the western boundary. In the center of the tract shall be the sanctuary.

9 The tract that you set aside for the LORD shall be twenty-five thousand cubits across by twenty thousand north and south.

10 In this sacred tract the priests shall have twenty-five thousand cubits on the north, ten thousand on the west, ten thousand on the east, and twenty-five thousand on the south; and the sanctuary of the LORD shall be in its center.

11 The consecrated priests, the Zadokites, who fulfilled my service and did not stray along with the Israelites as the Levites did,

12 shall have within this tract of land their own most sacred domain, next to the territory of the Levites.

13 The Levites shall have a territory corresponding to that of the priests, twenty-five thousand cubits by ten thousand. The whole tract shall be twenty-five thousand cubits across and twenty thousand north and south.

14 They may not sell or exchange or alienate this, the best part of the land, for it is sacred to the LORD.

15 The remaining five thousand cubits along the twenty-five-thousand-cubit line are profane land, assigned to the City for dwellings and pasture; the City shall be at their center.

16 These are the dimensions of the City: the north side, forty-five hundred cubits; the south side, forty-five hundred cubits; the east side, forty-five hundred cubits; and the west side, forty-five hundred cubits.

17 The pasture lands of the City shall extend north two hundred and fifty cubits, south two hundred and fifty cubits, east two hundred and fifty cubits, and west two hundred and fifty cubits.

18 There shall remain an area along the sacred tract, ten thousand cubits to the east and ten thousand to the west, whose produce shall provide food for the workers of the City.

19 The workers in the City shall be taken from all the tribes of Israel.

20 The entire tract shall be twenty-five thousand by twenty-five thousand cubits; as a perfect square you shall set apart the sacred tract together with the City property.

21 The remainder shall belong to the prince: the land on both sides of the sacred tract and the City property, extending along the twenty-five-thousand-cubit line eastward to the eastern boundary, and westward along the twenty-five-thousand-cubit line to the western boundary, a territory parallel with the tribal portions for the prince. The sacred tract and the sanctuary of the temple shall be in the middle.

22 Thus, except for the property of the Levites and the City property, which lie in the midst of the prince's property, the territory between the portions of Judah and of Benjamin shall belong to the prince.

23 These are the remaining tribes. Benjamin: from the eastern to the western boundary.

24 Simeon: on the frontier of Benjamin, from the eastern to the western boundary.

25 Issachar: on the frontier of Simeon, from the eastern to the western boundary.

26 Zebulun: on the frontier of Issachar, from the eastern to the western boundary.

27 Gad: on the frontier of Zebulun, from the eastern to the western boundary.

28 Along the frontier of Gad shall be the southern boundary, which shall extend from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, and from there to the Wadi of Egypt, and on to the Great Sea.

29 Such is the land which you shall apportion as inheritances among the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, says the Lord GOD.

30 These are the exits of the City, the gates of which are named after the tribes of Israel. On the north side, measuring forty-five hundred cubits,

31 there shall be three gates: the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi.

32 On the east side, measuring forty-five hundred cubits, there shall be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan.

33 On the south side, measuring forty-five hundred cubits, there shall be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun.

34 On the west side, measuring forty-five hundred cubits, there shall be three gates: the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali.

35 The perimeter of the City is eighteen thousand cubits. The name of the City shall henceforth be "The LORD is here."

v 1-7. In Joshua 13:1-19:51, Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh had their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan, and boundaries of all were uneven and of various sizes. In the future, the portion of land given each tribe is in parallel strips from the Mediterranean Sea, to the Jordan River, except in the north where it extends a little farther east. However it is assumed that where the land is short from east to west, the strips will be wider than where it is long from east to west. Starting from the north, the portions go to Dan, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, Reuben and Judah.

v 8-20.  South of Judah is the Holy Oblation, a square 25,000 cubits on each side. The north 10,000 is for the Levites. The 10,000 under it is for the priests. The temple will be in the priests’ portion. The 5000 remaining south of that is for the city. It is square, 4,500 cubits on a side, surrounded on all sides by a band 250 cubits wide. This will provide pasture land for people in the city.  On the east and west sides of the city will be portions 5,000 cubits wide and 10,000 cubits long. This will be farmland to provide food for the people in the city.

v 21,22. The land on either side of the above oblation will be for the prince, and as already stated, the temple will be in the midst of that, in the priests portion.

v 23-29. Starting south of the holy oblation and prince’s portion are the tribes of Benjamin, Simeon, Issachar, Zebulun and Gad.
Remember, Joseph was given a double portion, so his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh each have a portion. There are still twelve tribal portions, because the Levites have their portion in the holy oblation, but note the gates, v 31,32.

v 30-35. There are three gates on each side of the city, and the arrangement is significant. On the north are Reuben, Judah and Levi. These were sons of Leah and their portions are in the northern part. On the east are Joseph Benjamin and Dan. Levi was given a gate so Joseph gets one instead of Ephraim and Manasseh. Joseph and Benjamin were sons of Rachel and Dan was the first son by her concubine. The gates on the south side were for Simeon, Issachar and Zebulun. They were also sons of Leah, and the gate faced their inheritance. The west gates were for Gad, Asher and Naphtali. These were from Leah’s concubines, Zilpah and Bilhah.
In the first verse of Ezekiel he said he saw the visions of God. God is central throughout, and nearly 100 times he uses an expression, “they shall know that I am the Lord”.  Then in the last verse of the book he says, “The Lord is there”. That is in the Millennial Jerusalem, but also in heaven, that is more important than streets of gold.
