IN the tenth year, in the tenth month, in the twelfth day of the month, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, |
1In the tenth yeere, in the tenth moneth, in the twelft day of the moneth, the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying, 2Sonne of man, set thy face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophecie against him, and against all Egypt. 3Speake and say, Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the middest of his riuers, which hath saide, My riuer is mine owne, and I haue made it for my selfe. 4But I will put hookes in thy chawes, and I will cause the fish of thy riuers to sticke vnto thy scales, and I will bring thee vp out of the middest of thy riuers, and all the fish of thy riuers shall sticke vnto thy scales. 5And I will leaue thee throwen into the wildernes, thee and all the fish of thy riuers: thou shalt fall vpon the open fields, thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I haue giuen thee for meat to the beastes of the field, and to the foules of the heauen. 6And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the Lord, because they haue bene a staffe of reede to the house of Israel. 7When they tooke hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst breake, and rent all their shoulder: and when they leaned vpon thee, thou brakest, and madest all their loynes to be at a stand. 8 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will bring a sword vpon thee, and cut off man and beast out of thee. 9And the land of Egypt shalbe desolate and waste, and they shall knowe that I am the Lord: because he hath saide, The riuer is mine, and I haue made it. 10Beholde therefore, I am against thee, and against thy riuers, and I wil make the land of Egypt vtterly waste and desolate, from the towre of Syene euen vnto the border of Ethiopia. 11No foot of man shal passe through it, nor foote of beast shall passe through it, neither shall it bee inhabited fourtie yeeres. 12And I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countreys that are desolate, and her cities among the cities that are layed waste, shall be desolate fourtie yeeres: and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and wil disperse them through the countreys. 13 Yet thus saith the Lord God, At the end of fourtie yeeres will I gather the Egyptians from the people whither they were scattered. 14And I will bring againe the captiuitie of Egypt, and will cause them to returne into the land of Pathros, into the land of their habitation, and they shall be there a base kingdome. 15It shall be the basest of the kingdomes, neither shall it exalt it selfe any more aboue the nations: for I will diminish them, that they shall no more rule ouer the nations. 16And it shall be no more the confidence of the house of Israel, which bringeth their iniquity to remembrance, when they shall looke after them: but they shall know that I am the Lord God. 17 And it came to passe in the seuen and twentieth yeere, in the first moneth, in the first day of the moneth, the worde of the Lord came vnto me, saying, 18Sonne of man, Nebuchad-rezzar king of Babylon caused his armie to serue a great seruice against Tyrus: euery head was made balde, and euery shoulder was peeled: yet had he no wages, nor his armie for Tyrus, for the seruice that he had serued against it. 19Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I will giue the land of Egypt vnto Nebuchad-rezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take her multitude, and take her spoile, and take her praye, and it shall be the wages for his armie. 20I haue giuen him the land of Egypt for his labour wherewith he serued against it, because they wrought for me, saith the Lord God. 21 In that day will I cause the horne of the house of Israel to budde forth, and I will giue thee the opening of the mouth in the midst of them, and they shal know that I am the Lord. |

1 On the twelfth day of the tenth month in the tenth year, the word of the LORD came to me: 2 Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all Egypt. 3 Say this to him: Thus says the Lord GOD: See! I am coming at you, Pharaoh, king of Egypt, Great crouching monster amidst your Niles: Who say, "The Niles are mine; it is I who made them!" 4 I will put hooks in your jaws and make the fish of your Niles stick to your scales, then draw you up from the midst of your Niles along with all the fish of your Niles sticking to your scales. 5 I will cast you into the desert, you and all the fish of your Niles; You shall fall upon the open field, you shall not be taken up or buried; To the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air I give you as food, 6 That all who dwell in Egypt may know that I am the LORD. Because you have been a reed staff for the house of Israel: 7 When they held you in hand, you splintered, throwing every shoulder out of joint; When they leaned on you, you broke, bringing each one of them down headlong; 8 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: See! I will bring the sword against you, and cut off from you both man and beast. 9 The land of Egypt shall become a desolate waste; thus they shall know that I am the LORD. Because you said, "The Niles are mine; it is I who made them," 10 therefore see! I am coming at you and against your Niles; I will make the land of Egypt a waste and a desolation from Migdol to Syene, and even to the frontier of Ethiopia. 11 No foot of man or beast shall pass through it; they shall not pass through it, and it will be uninhabited for forty years. 12 I will make the land of Egypt the most desolate of lands, and its cities shall be the most deserted of cities for forty years; and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and strew them over foreign lands. 13 Yet thus says the Lord GOD: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples among whom they are scattered, 14 and I will restore Egypt's fortune, bringing them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin, where it will be the lowliest 15 of kingdoms, never more to set itself above the nations. I will make them few, that they may not dominate the nations. 16 No longer shall they be for the house of Israel to trust in, but the living reminder of its guilt for having turned to follow after them. Thus they shall know that I am the LORD. 17 On the first day of the first month in the twenty-seventh year, the word of the LORD came to me: 18 Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has led his army in an exhausting campaign against Tyre. Their heads became bald and their shoulders were galled; but neither he nor his army received any wages from Tyre for the campaign he led against it. 19 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: I am now giving the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. He shall carry off its riches, plundering and pillaging it for the wages of his soldiers, who did it for me; 20 as payment for his toil I have given him the land of Egypt, says the Lord GOD. 21 On that day I will make a horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will cause you to speak out in their midst; thus they shall know that I am the LORD. |
v 1-9. This prophecy against Egypt was given Jan. 5, 587 BC, almost a year after the siege of Jerusalem began, 24:1,2. Pharaoh Hophra promised Israel assistance so she would break from Babylon, so he and Egypt are condemned. He is compared to a mythical monster god in the river, but God would bring him out with fish sticking to his scales, and he would die out in the desert. All would know he was not a god. Egypt did make an attempt against Babylon like a weak reed when Jerusalem was besieged.
v 10-16. The time of this 40 year desolation of Egypt and deportation of people was probably when Nebuchadnezzar defeated them. There is no secular record, but he took many to Babylon as he did all other nations, 30:18. Cyrus might have begun their release 33 years later, restoration being completed in 40 years. Egypt was never again a major power in Bible days, nor yet today.
v 17-21. This prophecy, Apr. 26, 571 BC, confirms the last comments about Egypt. Nebuchadnezzar had spent 13 years in siege of Tyre, physically bruising the soldiers, but Tyre had shipped out their wealth. He was doing God’s service, so he does God’s service against Egypt and is richly repaid for the time spent at Tyre and was able to reward his soldiers. In the day Israel was restored, they would see that the words from Ezekiel’s mouth were true, even though he might have died by then.
