AFTERWARD he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: |
1Afterward he brought me to the gate, euen the gate that looketh toward the East. 2And behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the East: and his voice was like a noise of many waters, and the earth shined with his glory. 3And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, euen according to the vision that I saw, when I came to destroy the citie: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the riuer Chebar: and I fell vpon my face. 4And the glorie of the Lord came into the house by the way of the gate, whose prospect is toward the East. 5So the Spirit tooke me vp, and brought mee into the inner court, and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house. 6And I heard him speaking vnto me out of the house, & the man stood by me. 7 And he said vnto me, Sonne of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feete, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for euer, and my holy Name, shall the house of Israel no more defile, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredome, nor by the carkeises of their kings in their high places. 8In their setting of their threshold by my thresholds, and their post by my postes, and the wall betweene me and them, they haue euen defiled my holy Name by their abominations that they haue committed: wherefore I haue consumed them in mine anger. 9Now let them put away their whoredome, and the carkeises of their kings farre from me, and I wil dwell in the middest of them for euer. 10 Thou sonne of man, shew the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities, and let them measure the patterne. 11And if they be ashamed of all that they haue done; shew them the forme of the house, and the fashion thereof, and the goings out thereof, and the commings in thereof, and all the formes thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and all the formes thereof, and all the lawes thereof: & write it in their sight, that they may keepe the whole forme thereof, and all the Ordinances therof, and doe them. 12This is the law of the house; Upon the top of the mountaine, the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy: behold, this is the law of the house. 13 And these are the measures of the Altar after the cubites; the cubite is a cubite and an hand breadth, euen the bottom shalbe a cubite, and the breadth a cubite, and the border thereof by the edge therof round about shalbe a spanne, and this shalbe the higher place of the Altar. 14And from the bottom vpon the ground, euen to the lower settle, shalbe two cubits, and the breadth one cubite, and from the lesser settle euen to the greater settle shalbe foure cubites, and the breadth one cubite. 15So the Altar shalbe foure cubites, and from the altar and vpward shalbe foure hornes. 16And the altar shalbe twelue cubites long, twelue broad, square in the foure squares thereof. 17And the settle shall bee fourteene cubites long, and fourteene broad in the foure squares thereof, and the border about it shalbe halfe a cubite, and the bottome thereof shall be a cubite about, and his staires shall looke toward the East. 18 And he said vnto me, Sonne of man, thus saith the Lord God, These are the ordinances of the Altar in the day when they shall make it to offer burnt offrings thereon, and to sprinkle blood thereon. 19And thou shalt giue to the Priests the Leuites that be of the seede of Zadok, which approch vnto me, to minister vnto me, saith the Lord God, a yong bullocke for a sinne offering. 20And thou shalt take of the blood thereof, and put it on the foure hornes of it, and on the foure corners of the settle, and vpon the border round about: thus shalt thou cleanse and purge it. 21Thou shalt take the bullocke also of the sinne offering, and he shall burne it in the appointed place of the house without the Sanctuary. 22And on the second day thou shalt offer a kidde of the goats without blemish for a sinne offering, and they shall cleanse the Altar, as they did cleanse it with the bullocke. 23When thou hast made an ende of cleansing it, thou shalt offer a yong bullocke without blemish, and a ramme out of the flocke, without blemish. 24And thou shalt offer them before the Lord, and the Priests shall cast salt vpon them, and they shall offer them vp for a burnt offering vnto the Lord. 25Seuen dayes shalt thou prepare euery day a goate for a sinne offering: they shall also prepare a yong bullocke, and a ramme out of the flocke, without blemish. 26Seuen dayes shal they purge the Altar and purifie it, and they shall consecrate themselues. 27And when these dayes are expired, it shall be that vpon the eight day and so forward, the Priests shall make your burnt offerings vpon the Altar, and your peace offerings; and I will accept you, saith the Lord God. |

1 Then he led me to the gate which faces the east, 2 and there I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. I heard a sound like the roaring of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory. 3 The vision was like that which I had seen when he came to destroy the city, and like that which I had seen by the river Chebar. I fell prone 4 as the glory of the LORD entered the temple by way of the gate which faces the east, 5 but spirit lifted me up and brought me to the inner court. And I saw that the temple was filled with the glory of the LORD. 6 Then I heard someone speaking to me from the temple, while the man stood beside me. 7 The voice said to me: Son of man, this is where my throne shall be, this is where I will set the soles of my feet; here I will dwell among the Israelites forever. Never again shall they and their kings profane my holy name with their harlotries and with the corpses of their kings (their high places). 8 When they placed their threshold against my threshold and their doorpost next to mine, so that only a wall was between us, they profaned my holy name by their abominable deeds; therefore I consumed them in my wrath. 9 From now on they shall put far from me their harlotry and the corpses of their kings, and I will dwell in their midst forever. 10 As for you, son of man, describe the temple to the house of Israel (that they may be ashamed of their sins), both its measurements and its design; 11 (and if they are ashamed of all that they have done,) make known to them the form and design of the temple, its exits and entrances, all its statutes and laws; write these down for them to see, that they may carefully observe all its laws and statutes. 12 This is the law of the temple: its whole surrounding area on the mountain top shall be most sacred. 13 These were the measurements of the altar in cubits of one cubit plus a handbreadth. Its base was one cubit high and one cubit deep, with a rim around its edges of one span. The height of the altar itself was as follows: 14 from its base at the bottom up to the lower edge it was two cubits high, and this ledge was one cubit deep; from the lower to the upper ledge it was four cubits high, and this ledge also was one cubit deep; 15 the hearth of the altar was four cubits high, and extending from the top of the hearth were the four horns of the altar. 16 The hearth was a square: twelve cubits long and twelve cubits wide. 17 The upper ledge was also a square: fourteen cubits long and fourteen cubits wide. The lower ledge, likewise a square, was sixteen cubits long and sixteen cubits wide, with a half-cubit rim surrounding it. And there was a base of one cubit all around. The steps of the altar face the east. 18 Then he said to me: Son of man, thus says the Lord GOD: These are the statutes for the altar when it is set up for the offering of holocausts upon it and for the sprinkling of blood against it. 19 Give a young bull as a sin offering to the priests, the Levites who are of the line of Zadok, who draw near me to minister to me, says the Lord GOD. 20 Take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar, and on the four corners of the ledge, and on the rim all around. Thus you shall purify it and make atonement for it. 21 Then take the bull of the sin offering, which is to be burnt in a designated part of the temple, outside the sanctuary. 22 On the second day present an unblemished he-goat as a sin offering, to purify the altar as was done with the bull. 23 When you have finished the purification, bring an unblemished young bull and an unblemished ram from the flock, 24 and present them before the LORD; the priests shall strew salt on them and offer them to the LORD as holocausts. 25 Daily for seven days you shall offer a he-goat as a sin offering, and a young bull and a ram from the flock, all unblemished, shall be offered 26 for seven days. Thus atonement shall be made for the altar, and it shall be purified and dedicated. 27 And when these days are over, from the eighth day on, the priests shall offer your holocausts and peace offerings on the altar. Then I will accept you, says the Lord GOD. |
v 1-5. In a dramatic reversal of the vision of the glory of the Lord leaving the city before the Lord destroyed it, now Ezekiel sees the glory of the Lord returning by the east gate, the gate from which it left. He apparently saw the same cherubim of wheels and fire that he saw earlier. This will also resemble the return of Christ in glory, Rev. 1:15. The glory of the Lord has been absent during the whole time of the Gentiles.
v 6-9. God had left the temple because of the wickedness, but this would be His permanent dwelling place among men.
v 10-12. Ezekiel to describe it to the people so they would be ashamed of sins.
v 13-17. The portion of the altar above ground was 17.5 feet, and 25 feet square. Men had faced east to the sun god, but the steps are to the east so they will face west.
v 18-27. Some think the offerings are not to be taken literally, but if the rest is, so should this be. After the seven day consecration of the altar, they will be memorial of Christ’s death. Fellowship offerings will express their fellowship with God.
