Ezekiel 39

KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

THEREFORE, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the Lord.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord God; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
9 And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:
10 So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord God.
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamon-gog.
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord God.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamon-gog.
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord God.
21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward.
23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27 When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28 Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God.

1Therefore thou sonne of man, prophecie against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee O Gog, the chiefe prince of Meshech & Tubal.

2And I will turne thee backe, and leaue but the sixt part of thee, and will cause thee to come vp from the North parts, and will bring thee vpon the mountaines of Israel:

3And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrowes to fall out of thy right hand.

4Thou shalt fall vpon the mountaines of Israel, thou & all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will giue thee vnto the rauenous birds of euery sort, and to the beasts of the field to be deuoured.

5Thou shalt fall vpon the open field, for I haue spoken it, saith the Lord God.

6And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelesly in the yles, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

7So will I make my holy Name knowen in the midst of my people Israel, and I will not let them pollute my holy Name any more, and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the holy One in Israel.

8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord God, this is the day whereof I haue spoken.

9And they that dwell in the cities of Israel, shall goe forth, and shall set on fire, and burne the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bowes and the arrowes, and the handstaues and the speares, and they shall burne them with fire seuen yeeres.

10So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut downe any out of the forrests: for they shall burne the weapons with fire, and they shall spoile those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord God.

11 And it shal come to passe at that day, that I will giue vnto Gog a place there of graues in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the East of the Sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers, and there shall they burie Gog, and all his multitude, and they shal call it, the valley of Hamon-gog.

12And seuen moneths shall the house of Israel bee burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.

13Yea all the people of the land shall burie them, and it shall be to them a renowne the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord God.

14And they shall seuer out men of continual emploiment, passing through the land, to burie with the passengers those that remaine vpon the face of the earth to clense it: after the end of seuen moneths shall they search.

15And the passengers that passe through the lande, when any seeth a mans bone, then shall he set vp a signe by it, till the buriers haue buried it in the valley of Hamon-gog.

16And also the name of the citie shall be Hamonah: thus shal they clense the land.

17 And thou sonne of man, Thus saith the Lord God, Speake vnto euery feathered foule, and to euery beast of the field, Assemble your selues, and come, gather your selues on euery side to my sacrifice that I doe sacrifice for you, euen a great sacrifice vpon the mountaines of Israel, that ye may eat flesh and drinke blood.

18Ye shall eate the flesh of the mightie, and drinke the blood of the princes of the earth, of rammes, of lambes and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.

19And yee shall eate fat till yee be full, and drinke blood till yee be drunken, of my sacrifice which I haue sacrificed for you.

20Thus yee shall be filled at my table with horses and charets, with mightie men, and with all men of warre, saith the Lord God.

21And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shal see my iudgement that I haue executed, and my hande that I haue laid vpon them.

22So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward.

23 And the heathen shall knowe that the house of Israel went into captiuitie for their iniquitie: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gaue them into the hand of their enemies; so fell they all by the sword.

24According to their vncleannesse, and according to their transgressions haue I done vnto them, and hid my face from them.

25Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Now will I bring againe the captiuitie of Iacob, and haue mercie vpon the whole house of Israel, and will be ielous for my holy Name:

26After that they haue borne their shame, and all their trespasses, wherby they haue trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their lande, and none made them afraid.

27When I haue brought them againe from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;

28Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captiuitie among the heathen: but I haue gathered them vnto their owne land, and haue left none of them any more there.

29Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I haue powred out my Spirit vpon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God.

1 Now, son of man, prophesy against Gog in these words: Thus says the Lord GOD: See! I am coming at you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.

2 I will turn you about, I will urge you on, and I will make you come up from the recesses of the north; I will lead you against the mountains of Israel.

3 Then I will strike the bow from your left hand, and make the arrows drop from your right.

4 Upon the mountains of Israel you shall fall, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you. To birds of prey of every kind and to the wild beasts I am giving you to be eaten.

5 On the open field you shall fall, for I have decreed it, says the Lord GOD.

6 I will send fire upon Magog and upon those who live securely in the coastlands; thus they shall know that I am the LORD.

7 I will make my holy name known among my people Israel; I will no longer allow my holy name to be profaned. Thus the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.

8 Yes, it is coming and shall be fulfilled, says the Lord GOD. This is the day I have decreed.

9 Then shall those who live in the cities of Israel go out and burn weapons: (shields and bucklers,) bows and arrows, clubs and lances; for seven years they shall make fires with them.

10 They shall not have to bring in wood from the fields or cut it down in the forests, for they shall make fires with the weapons. Thus they shall plunder those who plundered them and pillage those who pillaged them, says the Lord GOD.

11 On that day I will give Gog for his tomb a well-known place in Israel, the Valley of Abarim east of the sea (it is blocked to travelers). Gog shall be buried there with all his horde, and it shall be named "Valley of Hamon-gog."

12 To purify the land, the house of Israel shall need seven months to bury them.

13 All the people of the land shall bury them and gain renown for it, when I reveal my glory, says the Lord GOD.

14 Men shall be permanently employed to pass through the land burying those who lie unburied, so as to purify the land. For seven months they shall keep searching.

15 When they pass through, should they see a human bone, let them put up a marker beside it, until others have buried it in the Valley of Hamon-gog.

16 (Also the name of the city shall be Hamonah.) Thus the land shall be purified.

17 As for you, son of man, says the Lord GOD, say to birds of every kind and to all the wild beasts: Come together, from all sides gather for the slaughter I am about to provide for you, a great slaughter on the mountains of Israel: you shall have flesh to eat and blood to drink.

18 You shall eat the flesh of warriors and drink the blood of the princes of the land (rams, lambs, and goats, bullocks, fatlings of Bashan, all of them).

19 From the slaughter which I will provide for you, you shall eat fat until you are filled and drink blood until you are drunk.

20 You shall be filled at my table with horses and riders, with warriors and soldiers of every kind, says the Lord GOD.

21 Thus I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations shall see the judgment I have executed and the hand I have laid upon them.

22 From that day forward the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD, their God.

23 The nations shall know that because of its sins the house of Israel went into exile; for they transgressed against me, and I hid my face from them and handed them over to their foes, so that all of them fell by the sword.

24 According to their uncleanness and their transgressions I dealt with them, hiding my face from them.

25 Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have pity on the whole house of Israel, and I will be jealous for my holy name.

26 They shall forget their disgrace and all the times they broke faith with me, when they live in security on their land with no one to frighten them.

27 When I bring them back from among the peoples, I will gather them from the lands of their enemies, and will prove my holiness through them in the sight of many nations.

28 Thus they shall know that I, the LORD, am their God, since I who exiled them among the nations, will gather them back on their land, not leaving any of them behind.

29 No longer will I hide my face from them, for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord GOD.

v 1-7. There’s such a loss of life that only a sixth of the army will survive. Weapons will lie useless and bodies will lie wherever they fell in all the mountains and areas on all sides of Jerusalem. God will also send destruction into the invading homelands.

v 8-10. If this is literal, Israel will burn weapons for seven years. If it is figurative, they will be burning the fuels attackers brought in for their vehicles, tanks etc.

v 11-16. There will be millions of dead, not from the armies, but from the works of God. The valley east of the Jordan near the Dead Sea will be blocked with bodies and Israel will be seven months getting them all buried. It will be called Hamongog, the multitude of Gog, the graveyard, Hamanoah, or hordes. After the end of seven months, men will be appointed to go throughout the land, searching and burying, and anyone passing through will set up a marker by the bones, so the buriers can find them.

v 17-20. Birds and beasts will flock to the area to feed on the carcasses as though God had prepared a sacrificial meal for them. Death will claim even the mightiest men.

v 21-24. The effect will be that all nations including Israel will recognize that God is the Lord. They will all realize that the reason Israel had been punished by God was that they had rebelled against God, and Israel will turn back to God.

v 25-29. Further result of this will be speeding up the return of Jews to their homeland. The persecutions they will yet have in the Tribulation will serve to draw them nearer to God, and He will pour out His Spirit upon them before the terrible day of His wrath, Joel 2:28-32. God will never turn from them again, and all those who have placed their trust in Him will enter the Millennium for full restoration.
