AND it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, |
1And it came to passe in the twelfth yeere, in the twelft moneth, in the first day of the moneth, that the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying; 2Sonne of man, take vp a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say vnto him; Thou art like a young lyon of the nations, & thou art as a whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy riuers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their riuers. 3Thus saith the Lord God; I will therefore spread out my net ouer thee, with a company of many people, and they shall bring thee vp in my net. 4Then will I leaue thee vpon the land, I will cast thee forth vpon the open field, and will cause all the foules of the heauen to remaine vpon thee, and I will fill the beasts of the whole earth with thee. 5And I will lay thy flesh vpon the mountaines, and fill the valleis with thy height. 6I will also water with thy blood the land wherein thou swimmest, euen to the mountaines, and the riuers shall be full of thee. 7And when I shall put thee out, I wil couer the heauen, and make the starres thereof darke: I will couer the sunne with a cloud, and the moone shall not giue her light. 8All the bright lights of heauen will I make darke ouer thee, and set darkenesse vpon thy land, saith the Lord God. 9I wil also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not knowen. 10Yea I will make many people amazed at thee, and their kings shall be horribly afraide for thee, when I shall brandish my sword before them, and they shall tremble at euery moment; euerie man for his owne life, in the day of thy fall. 11 For thus saith the Lord God, The sword of the king of Babylon shal come vpon thee. 12By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations all of them: and they shall spoile the pompe of Egypt, and all the multitude therof shall be destroyed. 13I will destroy also all the beasts thereof from besides the great waters, neither shall the foote of man trouble them any more, nor the hoofes of beasts trouble them. 14Then will I make their waters deepe, and cause their riuers to runne like oyle, saith the Lord God. 15When I shall make the land of Egypt desolate, and the countrey shall be destitute of that wherof it was full; when I shall smite all them that dwell therein, then shal they know that I am the Lord. 16This is the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her: the daughters of the nations shall lament her: they shall lament for her, euen for Egypt and for al her multitude, saith the Lord God. 17 It came to passe also in the twelfth yeere, in the fifteenth day of the moneth, that the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying; 18Sonne of man, waile for the multitude of Egypt, & cast them downe, euen her, and the daughters of the famous nations, vnto the nether parts of the earth, with them that goe downe into the pit. 19Whom doest thou passe in beautie? goe downe, and be thou layed with the vncircumcised. 20They shall fall in the middest of them that are slaine by the sword: she is deliuered to the sword; draw her and all her multitudes. 21The strong among the mighty shall speake to him out of the middest of hell with them that helpe him: they are gone downe, they lie vncircumcised, slaine by the sword. 22Ashur is there, and all her companie: his graues are about him: al of them slaine, fallen by the sword. 23Whose graues are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her graue: all of them slaine, fallen by the sword, which caused terrour in the land of the liuing. 24There is Elam and all her multitude round about her graue, all of them slaine, fallen by the sword, which are gone downe vncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terrour in the lande of the liuing, yet haue they borne their shame with them that goe downe to the pit. 25They haue set her a bed in the midst of the slaine with all her multitudes: her graues are round about him, all of them vncircumcised, slaine by the sword: though their terrour was caused in the land of the liuing, yet haue they borne their shame with them that goe downe to the pit: he is put in the midst of them that be slaine. 26There is Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude: her graues are round about him: all of them vncircumcised, slaine by the sword, though they caused their terrour in the land of the liuing. 27And they shall not lie with the mightie, that are fallen of the vncircumcised, which are gone downe to hell with their weapons of warre: and they haue laid their swords vnder their heads, but their iniquities shalbe vpon their bones, though they were the terrour of the mightie in the land of the liuing. 28Yea thou shalt be broken in the midst of the vncircumcised, and shalt lie with them that are slaine with þe sword. 29There is Edom, her kings and all her princes, which with their might are laid by them that were slaine by the sword: they shall lie with the vncircumcised, and with them that go downe to the pit. 30There be the princes of the North all of them, and all the Zidomans: which are gone downe with the slaine, with their terrour they are ashamed of their might, and they lie vncircumcised with them that be slaine by the sword, and beare their shame with them that goe downe to the pit. 31Pharaoh shall see them, and shall bee comforted ouer all his multitude, euen Pharaoh and all his armie slaine by the sword, saith the Lord God. 32For I haue caused my terrour in the land of the liuing: and he shall bee laid in the midst of the vncircumcised with them that are slaine with the sword, euen Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord God. |

1 On the first day of the twelfth month in the twelfth year, the word of the LORD came to me: 2 Son of man, utter a lament over Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, saying to him: Lion of the nations, you are destroyed. You were like a monster in the sea, spouting in your streams, Stirring the water with your feet and churning its streams. 3 Thus says the Lord GOD: I will spread my net over you (with a host of many nations), and draw you up in my seine. 4 I will leave you on the land; on the open field I will cast you. I will have all the birds of the air alight on you, and all the beasts of the earth eat their fill of you. 5 I will leave your flesh on the mountains, and fill the valleys with your carcass. 6 I will water the land with what flows from you, and the river beds shall be filled with your blood. 7 When I snuff you out I will cover the heavens, and all their stars I will darken; The sun I will cover with clouds, and the moon shall not give its light. 8 All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken on your account, And I will spread darkness over your land, says the Lord GOD. 9 I will grieve the hearts of many peoples when I lead you captive among the nations, to lands which you do not know. 10 Many peoples shall be appalled at you, and their kings shall shudder over you in horror when they see me brandish my sword, and on the day of your downfall every one of them shall continuously tremble for his own life. 11 For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. 12 I will cut down your horde with the blades of warriors, all of them the most ruthless of the nations; They shall lay waste the glory of Egypt, and all her hordes shall be destroyed. 13 I will have all of her animals perish beside her abundant waters; The foot of man shall stir them no longer, nor shall the hoof of beast disturb them. 14 Then will I make their waters clear, and their streams flow like oil, says the Lord GOD. 15 When I turn Egypt into a waste, the land shall be devastated of all that is in it; when I strike all who live there, they shall know that I am the LORD. 16 This is a dirge, and it shall be sung: the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt and all its hordes shall they chant it, says the Lord GOD. 17 On the fifteenth day of the first month in the twelfth year, the word of the LORD came to me: 18 Son of man, lament over the throngs of Egypt, for the mighty nations have thrust them down to the bottom of the earth, with those who go down into the pit. 20 In the midst of those slain by the sword shall they fall, and place shall be made with them for all their hordes. Then from the midst of the nether world, the mighty warriors shall speak to Egypt: 19 "Whom do you excel in beauty? 21 Come down, you and your allies, lie with the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword." 22 There is Assyria with all her company, all of them slain, 23 whose graves have been made in the recesses of the pit; her company is around Egypt's grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living. 24 There is Elam with all her throng about Egypt's grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword: they have gone down uncircumcised to the bottom of the earth, who spread their terror in the land of the living, and they bear their disgrace with those who go down into the pit; 25 in the midst of the slain they are placed. 26 There are Meshech and Tubal and all their throng about her grave, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, for they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27 They do not lie with the mighty men fallen of old, who went down to the nether world with their weapons of war, whose swords were placed under their heads and whose shields were laid over their bones, though the mighty men caused terror in the land of the living. 28 But in the midst of the uncircumcised shall you lie, with those slain by the sword. 29 There are Edom, her kings, and all her princes, who despite their might have been placed with those slain by the sword; with the uncircumcised they lie, and with those who go down into the pit. 30 There are all the princes of the north and all the Sidonians, who have gone down with the slain, because of the terror their might inspired; they lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword and bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit. 31 When Pharaoh sees these, he shall be comforted for all his hordes slain by the sword - Pharaoh and all his army, says the Lord GOD. 32 Since he spread his terror in the land of the living, therefore is he laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword - Pharaoh and all his hordes, says the Lord GOD. |
v 1-10. March 3, 585 BC was two months after news of the fall of Jerusalem reached the captives in Babylon. The defeat of Egypt was certain, so Ezekiel was told to take up a lament against her. Pharaoh Hophra was like an alligator stirring up the water, as he stirred up the international situation. The blood and darkness are similar to the plagues of Moses, but were spoken symbolically of the light gone from Pharaoh.
v 11-16. Surrounding nations would fear, but the ruthless hordes of Babylonia would crush Pharaoh, and the waters he had stirred up would quiet down and flow as smooth as oil, and the surrounding nations would fear for their own vulnerability.
v 17-32. This is probably only two weeks after the preceding message. In poetic terms Ezekiel speaks of Egypt and surrounding nations going down to the pit, from which their could be no changing. In her pride she would be humbled to lie in death with those nations who had been defeated before her. Edom and Sidonians are pointed out for their past treatment of Israel. The only comfort Pharaoh can have is that those other nations are suffering the same humiliation he was.
