Ezekiel 22

KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

MOREOVER the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations.
3 Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord God, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself.
4 Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries.
5 Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, which art infamous and much vexed.
6 Behold, the princes of Israel, every one were in thee to their power to shed blood.
7 In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow.
8 Thou hast despised mine holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths.
9 In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness.
10 In thee have they discovered their fathers’ nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was set apart for pollution.
11 And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.
12 In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord God.
13 Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee.
14 Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the Lord have spoken it, and will do it.
15 And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countries, and will consume thy filthiness out of thee.
16 And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thyself in the sight of the heathen, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.
17 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
18 Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver.
19 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem.
20 As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you.
21 Yea, I will gather you, and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof.
22 As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the Lord have poured out my fury upon you.
23 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
24 Son of man, say unto her, Thou art the land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation.
25 There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof.
26 Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
27 Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.
28 And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord God, when the Lord hath not spoken.
29 The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.
30 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.
31 Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord God.

1Moreouer the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying;

2Now thou sonne of man, wilt thou iudge, wilt thou iudge the bloodie citie? yea thou shalt shew her all her abominations.

3Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord God; The citie sheadeth blood in the middest of it, that her time may come, and maketh idoles against herselfe to defile herselfe.

4Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed, and hast defiled thy selfe in thine idoles, which thou hast made, and thou hast caused thy daies to draw neere, and art come euen vnto thy yeeres; therfore haue I made thee a reproch vnto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries.

5Those that be neere, and those that be farre from thee, shall mocke thee which art infamous, and much vexed.

6Behold the princes of Israel, euerie one were in thee to their power to shead blood.

7In thee haue they set light by father and mother: in the middest of thee haue they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee haue they vexed the fatherlesse and the widow:

8Thou hast despised mine holy things, & hast prophaned my sabbaths:

9In thee are men that carie tales to shead blood: and in thee they eate vpon the mountaines: in the middest of thee they commit lewdnesse.

10In thee haue they discouered their fathers nakednesse: in thee haue they humbled her that was set apart for pollution.

11And one hath committed abomination with his neighbours wife, and an other hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law, and an other in thee hath humbled his sister, his fathers daughter.

12In thee haue they taken gifts to shead blood: thou hast taken vsury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord God.

13 Behold therefore, I haue smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gaine which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath bene in the midst of thee.

14Can thine heart indure, or can thine hands be strong in the dayes that I shall deale with thee? I the Lord haue spoken it, and will doe it.

15And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countreys, and will consume thy filthinesse out of thee.

16And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thy selfe in the sight of the heathen, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.

17And the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying,

18Sonne of man, the house of Israel is to me become drosse: all they are brasse, and tinne, and yron, and lead in the midst of the furnace: they are euen the drosse of siluer.

19Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Because ye are all become drosse, behold therefore I will gather you into the midst of Ierusalem.

20As they gather siluer, and brasse, and yron, and lead, and tinne into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire vpon it, to melt it: so will I gather you in mine anger, and in my fury, and I will leaue you there, and melt you.

21Yea, I will gather you, and blow vpon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shalbe melted in the midst thereof.

22As siluer is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the middest thereof, and ye shall know that I the Lord haue powred out my furie vpon you.

23 And the word of the Lord came vnto me, saying,

24Son of man, say vnto her, Thou art the land that is not cleansed, nor rained vpon in the day of indignation.

25There is a conspiracie of her prophets in the middest thereof like a roaring lyon, rauening the praye: they haue deuoured soules: they haue taken the treasure and precious things: they haue made her many widowes in the midst thereof.

26Her priests haue violated my law, and haue prophaned mine holy things: they haue put no difference betweene the holy and prophane, neither haue they shewed difference between the vncleane and the cleane, and haue hid their eyes from my Sabbaths, and I am prophaned among them.

27Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolues rauening the praye, to shed blood, and to destroy soules, to get dishonest gaine.

28And her prophets haue dawbed them with vntempered morter, seeing vanity, and diuining lies vnto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord God, when the Lord hath not spoken.

29The people of the land haue vsed oppression, and exercised robbery, and haue vexed the poore and needie: yea, they haue oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

30And I sought for a man among them, that should make vp the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

31Therefore haue I powred out mine indignation vpon them, I haue consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their owne way haue I recompensed vpon their heads, saith the Lord God.

1 Thus the word of the LORD came to me:

2 You, son of man, would you judge, would you judge the bloody city? Then make known all her abominations,

3 and say: Thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the city which sheds blood within herself so that her time has come, and which has made idols for her own defilement.

4 By the blood which you shed you have been made guilty, and with the idols you made you have become defiled; you have brought on your day, so that the end of your years has come. Therefore I make you an object of scorn to the nations and a laughingstock to all foreign lands.

5 Those near you and those far off shall deride you because of your foul reputation and your great perversity.

6 See! the princes of Israel, family by family, are in you only for bloodshed.

7 Within you, father and mother are despised; in your midst, they extort from the resident alien; within you, they oppress orphans and widows.

8 What is holy to me you have spurned, and my sabbaths you have desecrated.

9 There are those in you who slander to cause bloodshed; within you are those who feast on the mountains; in your midst are those who do lewd things.

10 In you are those who uncover the nakedness of their fathers, and in you those who coerce women in their menstrual period.

11 There are those in you who do abominable things with the wives of their neighbors, men who defile their daughters-in-law by incest, men who coerce their sisters, the daughters of their own fathers.

12 There are those in you who take bribes to shed blood. You exact interest and usury; you despoil your neighbors violently; and me you have forgotten, says the Lord GOD.

13 See, I am brushing one hand against the other because of the unjust profits you have made and because of the blood shed in your midst.

14 Can your heart remain firm, will your hands be strong, in the days when I deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will act.

15 I will disperse you among the nations and scatter you over foreign lands, so that I may purge your uncleanness.

16 In you I will allow myself to be profaned in the eyes of the nations; thus you shall know that I am the LORD.

17 Thus the word of the LORD came to me:

18 Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross for me. All of them are bronze and tin, iron and lead (in the midst of a furnace): dross from silver have they become.

19 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because all of you have become dross, therefore I must gather you together within Jerusalem.

20 Just as silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin are gathered into a furnace and smelted in the roaring flames, so I will gather you together in my furious wrath, put you in, and smelt you.

21 When I have assembled you, I will blast you with the fire of my anger and smelt you with it.

22 You shall be smelted by it just as silver is smelted in a furnace. Thus you shall know that I, the LORD, have poured out my fury on you.

23 Thus the word of the LORD came to me:

24 Son of man, say to her: You are a land unrained on (that is, not rained on) at the time of my fury.

25 Her princes are like roaring lions that tear prey; they devour people, seizing their wealth and precious things, and make widows of many within her.

26 Her priests violate my law and profane what is holy to me; they do not distinguish between the sacred and the profane, nor teach the difference between the unclean and the clean; they pay no attention to my sabbaths, so that I have been profaned in their midst.

27 Her nobles within her are like wolves that tear prey, shedding blood and destroying lives to get unjust gain.

28 Her prophets cover them with whitewash, pretending to visions that are false and performing lying divinations, saying, "Thus says the Lord GOD," although the LORD has not spoken.

29 The people of the land practice extortion and commit robbery; they afflict the poor and the needy, and oppress the resident alien without justice.

30 Thus I have searched among them for someone who could build a wall or stand in the breach before me to keep me from destroying the land; but I found no one.

31 Therefore I have poured out my fury upon them; with my fiery wrath I have consumed them; I have brought down their conduct upon their heads, says the Lord GOD.

v 1-6. Ezekiel is to act as a judge over Israel and point out two big sins of making idols and shedding blood, and her time had come for judgment.

v 7-12. Now he mentions not honoring parents, oppressing strangers, widows and orphan, violating the Sabbath, slander, all kinds of immorality and greed, and worst of all, they had forgotten God.

v 13-16. God would disperse and shame them to teach them among nations.

v 17-22. People gathered at Jerusalem to flee Nebuchadnezzar, but they felt the fiery blast of God’s wrath and were like the waste skimming off precious metals.

v 23-29. All sinned, priests violated the law, princes even shed blood to get gain dishonestly, prophets prophesied lies and people robbed and oppressed others.

v 30,31. No one in authority tried to stop the wickedness. Jeremiah was there, preaching, but they wouldn’t listen to him, so God poured out His wrath upon them.
