KING JAMES BIBLE KING JAMES 1611 VERSES TO VERSES THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE COMMENTARIE

AND the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.
10 Thus saith the Lord God; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil, and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
13 Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?
14 Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord God; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15 And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:
16 And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.
17 Thus saith the Lord God; Art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?
18 And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord God, that my fury shall come up in my face.
19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
21 And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

1And the word of þe Lord came vnto me, saying;

2Sonne of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog the chiefe prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophecie against him,

3And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chiefe prince of Meshech and Tubal.

4And I will turne thee backe, and put hookes into thy chawes, and I will bring thee foorth, and all thine armie, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, euen a great company with bucklers & shields, all of them handling swordes.

5Persia, Ethiopia and Libya with them; all of them with shield & helmet:

6Gomer and all his bandes, the house of Togarmah of the North quarters, and all his bands, and many people with thee.

7Be thou prepared, and prepare for thy selfe, thou and all thy company, that are assembled vnto thee, and be thou a guard vnto them.

8 After many daies thou shalt be visited: in the latter yeeres thou shalt come into the land, that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people against the mountaines of Israel, which haue beene alwayes waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

9Thou shalt ascend and come like a storme, thou shalt be like a cloud to couer the land, thou and all thy bands, and many people with thee.

10Thus saith the Lord God; It shall also come to passe, that at the same time shall things come into thy minde, and thou shalt thinke an euill thought.

11And thou shalt say: I will goe vp to the land of vnwalled villages; I will goe to them that are at rest, that dwell safely all of them dwelling without walles, and hauing neither barres nor gates;

12To take a spoile, and to take a praye, to turne thine hand vpon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and vpon the people that are gathered out of the nations which haue gotten cattel and goods, that dwell in the middest of the land.

13Sheba, and Dedan, and the marchants of Tarshish, with all the young lyons thereof, shall say vnto thee, Art thou come to take a spoile? hast thou gathered thy company to take a praye? to carie away siluer and gold, to take away cattell and goods, to take a great spoile?

14 Therefore, sonne of man, prophecie and say vnto Gog, Thus saith the Lord God; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?

15And thou shalt come from thy place out of the North parts, thou and many people with thee, all of them riding vpon horses, a great company, and a mighty armie.

16And thou shalt come vp against my people of Israel, as a cloud to couer the land; it shall be in the latter dayes, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.

17Thus saith the Lord God; Art thou hee, of whom I haue spoken in old time by my seruants the prophets of Israel, which prophecied in those dayes many yeeres, that I would bring thee against them?

18And it shall come to passe at the same time, when Gog shal come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord God, that my furie shall come vp in my face.

19For in my iealousie, and in the fire of my wrath haue I spoken: surely in that day, there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel.

20So that the fishes of the sea, and the foules of the heauen, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creepe vpon the earth, and all the men that are vpon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountaines shall be throwen downe, and the steepe places shall fall, and euery wall shall fall to the ground.

21And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountaines, saith the Lord God: euery mans sword shalbe against his brother.

22And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood, and I will raine vpon him and vpon his bands, and vpon the many people that are with him, an ouerflowing raine, and great hailestones, fire, and brimstone.

23Thus will I magnifie my selfe, and sanctifie my selfe, and I will be knowen in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord.

1Thus the word of the LORD came to me:

2 Son of man, turn toward Gog (the land of Magog), the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him:

3 Thus says the Lord GOD: See! I am coming at you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.

4 I will lead you forth with all your army, horses and riders all handsomely outfitted, a great horde with bucklers and shields, all of them carrying swords:

5 Persia, Cush, and Put with them (all with shields and helmets),

6 Gomer with all its troops, Beth-togarmah from the recesses of the north with all its troops, many peoples with you.

7 Prepare yourself, be ready, you and all your horde assembled about you, and be at my disposal.

8 After many days you will be mustered (in the last years you will come) against a nation which has survived the sword, which has been assembled from many peoples (on the mountains of Israel which were long a ruin), which has been brought forth from among the peoples and all of whom now dwell in security.

9 You shall come up like a sudden storm, advancing like a cloud to cover the earth, you and all your troops and the many peoples with you.

10 Thus says the Lord GOD: At that time thoughts shall arise in your mind, and you shall devise an evil scheme:

11 "I will go up against a land of open villages and attack the peaceful people who are living in security, all of them living without walls, having neither bars nor gates,

12 to plunder and pillage, turning my hand against the ruins that were repeopled and against a people gathered from the nations, a people concerned with cattle and goods, who dwell at the navel of the earth."

13 Sheba and Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish and all her young lions shall ask you: "Is it for plunder that you have come? Is it for pillage that you have summoned your horde, to carry off silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to seize much plunder?"

17 Thus says the Lord GOD: It is of you that I spoke in ancient times through my servants, the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days that I would bring you against them.

18 But on that day, the day when Gog invades the land of Israel, says the Lord GOD, my fury shall be aroused. In my anger

19 and in my jealousy, in my fiery wrath, I swear: On that day there shall be a great shaking upon the land of Israel.

20 Before me shall tremble the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, the beasts of the field and all the reptiles that crawl upon the ground, and all men who are on the land. Mountains shall be overturned, and cliffs shall tumble, and every wall shall fall to the ground.

21 Against him I will summon every terror, says the Lord GOD, every man's sword against his brother. I will hold judgment with him in pestilence and bloodshed;

22 flooding rain and hailstones, fire and brimstone, I will rain upon him, upon his troops, and upon the many peoples with him.

23 I will prove my greatness and holiness and make myself known in the sight of many nations; thus they shall know that I am the LORD.

14 Therefore prophesy, son of man, and say to Gog: Thus says the Lord GOD: When my people Israel are dwelling in security, will you not bestir yourself

15 and come from your home in the recesses of the north, you and many peoples with you, all mounted on horses, a great horde and a mighty army?

16 You shall come up against my people Israel like a cloud covering the land. In the last days I will bring you against my land, that the nations may know of me, when in their sight I prove my holiness through you, O Gog.

 v 1-7. Gog is the prince and Magog the land that will attack Israel. This must be understood to be Russia and nations under her influence, from Iran through Turkey,  northwest Asia and northern Africa.
When will the battle of Gog and Magog actually be held? Definitely not during or after the Millennium. Definitely not before the Rapture. Many Scriptures point out differences between it and the final battle of Armageddon, so it is not at the close of the Tribulation. Tim LaHaye and others think there is a period of time between the Rapture and start of Tribulation and present strong arguments. Since it comes when Israel is at peace and safety, v 14, it would more likely be at the beginning of the first three and one half years, when there is false peace under Antichrist. Pentecost, in Things to Come, page 354, gives a very good chronology of events, but he seems to place it at the middle of the Tribulation. It may be better if it is considered right after the start of Tribulation. For one thing, Cleansing the land for burial seven years would be done during the seven years of Tribulation. This does not address the issue of cleansing after the final battle of Armageddon. A simple chronology of the whole campaign of Armageddon would be: 1. The armies of the South are defeated in campaign. 2. The armies of the North are smitten by the Lord.  3. The armies of the Beast and the East are slain by the Lord at second advent.
It is difficult to know whether the horses and weapons are literal, or if it was just being expressed in terms people of pre-modern days would understand. This is also true of the descriptions John gives in the book of Revelation.

v 8-16. See comments above. The attack to plunder Israel will be overwhelming and from all sides.

v 17-23. God Himself will crush these vast armies. Earthquakes will upset their plans and communications so that in fear, the countries will be fighting each other. There will be torrential rains and flooding with hail, and fire from lightning or volcano.
