Psalms 109 PERSON FALSELY ACCUSED PRAYER

KING JAMES BIBLE

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.
HOLD not thy peace, O God of my praise;
2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.
4 For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.
5 And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
6 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand.
7 When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin.
8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.
12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.
13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the Lord; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
15 Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.
16 Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.
17 As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.
18 As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.
19 Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.
20 Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the Lord, and of them that speak evil against my soul.
21 But do thou for me, O God the Lord, for thy name’s sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me.
22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
23 I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.
24 My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness.
25 I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads.
26 Help me, O Lord my God: O save me according to thy mercy:
27 That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, Lord, hast done it.
28 Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice.
29 Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.
30 I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude.
31 For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.

9Let his children bee fatherlesse: and his wife a widow.

10Let his children bee continually vagabonds, & begge: let them seeke their bread also out of their desolate places.

11Let the extortioner catch all that he hath: and let the strangers spoile his labour.

12Let there be none to extend mercy vnto him: neither let there be any to fauour his fatherlesse children.

13Let his posteritie be cut off: and in the generation folowing let their name be blotted out.

14Let the iniquitie of his fathers be remembred with the Lord: and let not the sinne of his mother be blotted out.

15Let them be before the Lord continually: that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

16Because that he remembred not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poore and needy man: that he might euen slay the broken in heart.

17As he loued cursing, so let it come vnto him: as hee delighted not in blessing, so let it be farre from him.

18As he clothed himselfe with cursing like as with his garment: so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oyle into his bones.

19Let it be vnto him as the garment which couereth him: and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

20Let this be the reward of mine aduersaries from the Lord: and of them that speake euill against my soule.

21But do thou for me, O God the Lord, for thy Names sake: because thy mercie is good: deliuer thou me.

22For I am poore and needie: and my heart is wounded within me.

23I am gone like the shadow, when it declineth: I am tossed vp and downe as the locust.

24My knees are weake through fasting: and my flesh faileth of fatnesse.

25I became also a reproch vnto them: when they looked vpon me, they shaked their heads.

26Helpe me, O Lord my God: O saue me according to thy mercie.

27That they may know, that this is thy hand: that thou, Lord, hast done it.

28Let them curse, but blesse thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed, but let thy seruant reioyce.

29Let mine aduersaries be clothed with shame: and let them couer them selues with their owne confusion, as with a mantle.

30I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth: yea I will praise him among the multitude.

31For he shal stand at the right hand of the poore: to saue him from those that condemne his soule.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 For the leader. A psalm of David.

2 O God, whom I praise, do not be silent, for wicked and treacherous mouths attack me.They speak against me with lying tongues;

3 with hateful words they surround me, attacking me without cause.

4 In return for my love they slander me, even though I prayed for them.

5 They repay me evil for good, hatred for my love.

6 Appoint an evil one over him,an accuser to stand at his right hand,

7 That he may be judged and found guilty, that his plea may be in vain.

8 May his days be few; may another take his office.

9 May his children be fatherless, his wife, a widow.

10 May his children wander and beg, driven from their hovels.

11 May the usurer snare all he owns, strangers plunder all he earns.

12 May no one treat him with mercyor pity his fatherless children.

13 May his posterity be destroyed, their name rooted out in the next generation.

14 May his fathers’ guilt be mentioned to the LORD; his mother’s sin not rooted out.

15 May their guilt be always before the LORD, till their memory is banished from the earth,

16 For he did not remember to show mercy, but hounded the wretched poorand brought death to the brokenhearted.

17 He loved cursing; may it come upon him; he hated blessing; may none come to him.

18 May cursing clothe him like a robe; may it enter his belly like water, his bones like oil.

19 May it be near as the clothes he wears, as the belt always around him.

20 May this be the reward for my accusers from the LORD,for those speaking evil against me.

21 But you, LORD, are my Lord, deal kindly with me for your name’s sake; in your great mercy rescue me.

22 For I am poor and needy; my heart is pierced within me.

23 Like a lengthening shadow I am gone, I am shaken off like the locust.

24 My knees totter from fasting; my flesh has wasted away.

25 I have become a mockery to them; when they see me, they shake their heads.

26 Help me, LORD, my God; save me in your mercy.

27 Make them know this is your hand, that you, LORD, have done this.

28 Though they curse, may you bless; arise, shame them, that your servant may rejoice.

29 Clothe my accusers with disgrace; make them wear their shame like a mantle.

30 I will give fervent thanks to the LORD; before a crowd I will praise him.31For he stands at the right hand of the poor to save him from those who pass judgment on him.

COMMENTARIE

PLALM 109 AN INPRECATROY PSALM VENGEANCE ON GOD'S ADVERSARIES.

V 1-5 David cried to God because of deceitful men who had returned evil for the good he had done for them.

V 6-20 David prayed for severe retribution against his enemies in 6-15, then explains the reasons why in 16-20. Let us remember Rom. 12:19, vengeance is God’s.

V 21-25 David plead for help because he was poor, needy, a reproach and weak through fasting.

V 26-31 His prayer was based on the desire that the enemies would know it was God who vindicated him, and his own praise for deliverance.
