Psalms 69 IN GREAT DISTRESS A CRY OF ANGUISH

KING JAMES BIBLE

To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, A Psalm of David.
SAVE me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.
2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
3 I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
4 They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
5 O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.
6 Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.
7 Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.
8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children.
9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.
11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.
12 They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.
13 But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O Lord, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.
14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15 Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.
16 Hear me, O Lord; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.
17 And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.
18 Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.
19 Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.
20 Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
22 Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.
24 Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.
25 Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.
26 For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.
27 Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.
29 But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
32 The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
33 For the Lord heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.
34 Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
35 For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.
36 The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.

KING JAMES 1611

1To the chiefe musician vpon Shoshannim, A Psalme of Dauid. Saue mee, O God, for the waters are come in vnto my soule.

2I sinke in deepe mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deepe waters, where the flouds ouerflow me.

3I am weary of my crying, my throate is dried: mine eyes faile while I waite for my God.

4They that hate mee without a cause, are moe then the haires of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mineenemies wrongfully, are mightie: then I restored that which I tooke not away.

5O God, thou knowest my foolishnesse; and my sinnes are not hidde from thee.

6Let not them that waite on thee, O Lord God of hostes, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seeke thee, beconfounded for my sake, O God of Israel.

7Because for thy sake I haue borne reproch: shame hath couered my face.

8I am become a stranger vnto my brethren, and an aliant vnto my mothers children.

9For the zeale of thine house hath eaten mee vp; and the reproches of them that reproched thee, are fallen vpon me.

10When I wept, and chastened my soule with fasting, that was to my reproch.

11I made sackecloth also my garment: & I became a prouerbe to them.

12They that sit in the gate, speake against mee; and I was the song of the drunkards.

13But as for mee, my prayer is vnto thee, O Lord, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercie heareme, in the trueth of thy saluation.

14Deliuer me out of the mire, and let me not sinke: let me bee deliuered from them that hate me, and out of thedeepe waters.

15Let not the water flood ouerflow me, neither let the deepe swallow mee vp, and let not the pit shut her mouth vponme.

16Heare me, O Lord, for thy louing kindnesse is good: turne vnto mee according to the multitude of thy tendermercies.

17And hide not thy face from thy seruant, for I am in trouble: heare me speedily.

18Draw nigh vnto my soule, and redeeme it: deliuer me because of mine enemies.

19Thou hast knowen my reproch and my shame and my dishonor: mine aduersaries are all before thee.

20Reproch hath broken my heart, and I am full of heauines: and I looked for some to take pitie, but there was none;and for comforters, but I found none.

21They gaue mee also gall for my meat, and in my thirst they gaue mee vineger to drinke.

22Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should haue bene for their welfare, let it become atrap.

23Let their eyes be darkened that they see not; and make their loines continually to shake.

24Powre out thine indignation vpon them, and let thy wrathfull anger take hold of them.

25Let their habitation be desolate, and let none dwell in their tents.

26For they persecute him whō thou hast smitten, and they talke to the griefe of those whom thou hast wounded.

27Adde iniquitie vnto their iniquitie: and let them not come into thy righteousnesse.

28Let them bee blotted out of the booke of the liuing, and not be written with the righteous.

29But I am poore, and sorowfull: let thy saluation (O God) set me vp on high.

30I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnifie him with thankesgiuing.

31This also shall please the Lord better then an oxe or bullocke that hath hornes and hoofes.

32The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall liue that seeke good.

33For the Lord heareth the poore, and despiseth not his prisoners.

34Let the heauen and earth praise him, the seas, and euery thing that moueth therein.

35For God will saue Sion, and will build the cities of Iudah, that they may dwell there, and haue it in possession.

36The seede also of his seruants shall inherit it: and they that loue his name shall dwell therein.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 For the leader; according to “Lilies.” Of David.

2 Save me, God, for the waters have reached my neck.

3 I have sunk into the mire of the deep, where there is no foothold. I have gone down to the watery depths; the flood overwhelms me.

4 I am weary with crying out; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, from looking for my God.

5 More numerous than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause. Those who would destroy me are mighty, my enemies without reason. Must I now restore what I did not steal?

6 God, you know my folly; my faults are not hidden from you.

7 Let those who wait in hope for you, LORD of hosts, not be shamed because of me. Let those who seek you, God of Israel, not be disgraced because of me.

8 For it is on your account I bear insult, that disgrace covers my face.

9 I have become an outcast to my kindred, a stranger to my mother’s children.

10 Because zeal for your house has consumed me, I am scorned by those who scorn you.

11 When I humbled my spirit with fasting, this led only to scorn.

12 When I clothed myself in sackcloth; I became a byword for them.

13 Those who sit in the gate gossip about me; drunkards make me the butt of songs.

14 But I will pray to you, LORD, at a favorable time. God, in your abundant kindness, answer me with your sure deliverance.

15 Rescue me from the mire, and do not let me sink. Rescue me from those who hate me and from the watery depths.

16 Do not let the flood waters overwhelm me, nor the deep swallow me, nor the pit close its mouth over me.

17 Answer me, LORD, in your generous love; in your great mercy turn to me.

18 Do not hide your face from your servant; hasten to answer me, for I am in distress.

19 Come and redeem my life; because of my enemies ransom me.

20 You know my reproach, my shame, my disgrace; before you stand all my foes.

21 Insult has broken my heart, and I despair; I looked for compassion, but there was none, for comforters, but found none.

22 Instead they gave me poison for my food; and for my thirst they gave me vinegar.

23 May their own table be a snare for them, and their communion offerings a trap.

24 Make their eyes so dim they cannot see; keep their backs ever feeble.

25 Pour out your wrath upon them; let the fury of your anger overtake them.

26 Make their camp desolate, with none to dwell in their tents.

27 For they pursued the one you struck, added to the pain of the one you wounded.

28 Heap punishment upon their punishment; let them gain from you no vindication.

29 May they be blotted from the book of life; not registered among the just!

30 But here I am miserable and in pain; let your saving help protect me, God,

31 That I may praise God’s name in song and glorify it with thanksgiving.

32 That will please the LORD more than oxen, more than bulls with horns and hooves:

33 “See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, take heart!

34 For the LORD hears the poor, and does not spurn those in bondage.

35 Let the heaven and the earth praise him, the seas and whatever moves in them!”

36 For God will rescue Zion, and rebuild the cities of Judah. They will dwell there and possess it;

37 the descendants of God’s servants will inherit it; those who love God’s name will dwell in it.

COMMENTARIE

This Psalm of David is a plea for rescue because he bore the reproach and rejection of his brethren for the Lord’s sake, but it goes beyond that and is Messianic. Verses 4, 7, 8, 10-12 speak of Christ’s humiliation and rejection. Verses 14-20 tell of His experience in Gethsemane, Mt. 26:36-45. Verse 21 is a direct reference to the cross. The imprecatory prayer of verses 22-28 is referred to in Rom. 11:9,10, and refers to the present judicial blindness of Israel. Verse 25 has special reference to Judas, Acts 1:20 and is typical to those of his generation who shared his guilt.

Verses 1-4 show David’s grief while his enemies hated him without cause.

Verses 5-12 speak of his zeal for the house of the Lord, going in sack cloth, with even his brethren and judges in the gate reproaching him.

Verses 13-28 are a prayer to be saved from imminent death. He knows that God is aware of his reproach and how he is given food, v 21, of a mourner in hypocrisy. In verses 23-28 he prays  his enemies be blotted out of the book of life, cp Rev. 20:15. 69:28 The Lord is a good book keeper, and the book referred to in verses Ex. 32:32, 33 is the same mentioned in 69:28, the book of the living. Wording indicates that everyone who ever lived is written in this book, but the wicked will be blotted out, leaving only the names of the righteous. This would be the same book as in Daniel 12:1.

Verses 29-33 David knows thanksgiving is more pleasing to God than sacrifice, and the humble will be glad when they see God’s response to him, because the Lord will hear them, though poor and in prison.

Verses 34-36. David calls for universal praise to God for anticipated deliverance. Don’t forget, much of this is Messianic as stated in the opening paragraph.
