Psalms 124 THE RESCUER OF THE PEOPLE: GOD

KING JAMES BIBLE

A Song of degrees of David.
1 IF it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say;
2 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
6 Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 A s on g of ascents. Of David. Had not the LORD bee n with us, let Israel say,

2 Had not the LORD been with eus, when people rose against us,

3 Then they would have swallowed us alive, for their fury blazed against us.

4 Then the waters would have engulfed us, the torrent overwhelmed us;

5 then seething water would have drowned us.

6 Blessed is the LORD, who did not leave us to be torn by their teeth.

7 We escaped with our lives like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare was broken, and we escaped.

8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth.

COMMENTARIE

Psalm 124 For repeated National deliverance in times of fearful danger. A Hymn of thanksgiving and praise.

v 1-5 David realized as we should, that if the Lord is not on our side, we would be completely overwhelmed by those who oppose God.

v 6-8 He reaffirms that his help is from the Lord.
