Psalms 79 A PRAYER FOR JERUSALEM

KING JAMES BIBLE

A Psalm of Asaph.
O GOD, the heathen are come into thine inheritance; thy holy temple have they defiled; they have laid Jerusalem on heaps.
2 The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
3 Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.
4 We are become a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.
5 How long, Lord? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
6 Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
7 For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his dwelling place.
8 O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low.
9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name’s sake.
10 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God? let him be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.
11 Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve thou those that are appointed to die;
12 And render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.
13 So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations.

KING JAMES 1611

2The dead bodies of thy seruants haue they giuen to bee meate vnto the foules of the heauen: the flesh of thy Saints vnto the beasts of the earth.

3Their blood haue they shed like water round about Ierusalem: and there was none to burie them.

4We are become a reproach to our neighbours: a scorne and derision to them that are round about vs.

5How long, Lord, wilt thou be angry, for euer? shall thy ielousie burne like fire?

6Powre out thy wrath vpon the heathen that haue not knowen thee, and vpon the kingdomes that haue not called vpon thy name.

7For they haue deuoured Iacob: and laid waste his dwelling place.

8O remember not against vs former iniquities, let thy tender mercies speedily preuent vs: for we are brought very low.

9Helpe vs, O God of our saluation, for the glory of thy Name: and deliuer vs, and purge away our sinnes for thy Names sake.

10Wherfore should the heathen say, Where is their God? let him be knowen among the heathen in our sight by the reuenging of the blood of thy seruants which is shed.

11Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee, according to the greatnesse of thy power: preserue thou those that are appointed to die.

12And render vnto our neighbours seuen fold into their bosome, their reproach wherewith they haue reproched thee, O Lord.

13So we thy people and sheepe of thy pasture, will giue thee thankes for euer: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 A psalm of Asaph. O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins.

2They have left the corpses of your servants as food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of those devoted to you for the beasts of the earth.

3 They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and no one is left to do the burying.

4 We have become the reproach of our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.

5 How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealous anger keep burning like fire?

Pour out your wrath on nations that do not recognize you, on kingdoms that do not call on your name,

For they have devoured Jacob, laid waste his dwelling place.

Do not remember against us the iniquities of our forefathers; let your compassion move quickly ahead of us, for we have been brought very low.

9 Help us, God our savior, on account of the glory of your name. Deliver us, pardon our sins for your name’s sake.

10 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes make known to the nations that you avenge the blood of your servants which has been poured out.

11Let the groaning of the imprisoned come in before you; in accord with the greatness of your arm preserve those doomed to die.

12 Turn back sevenfold into the bosom of our neighbors the insult with which they insulted you, Lord.

13 Then we, your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.

COMMENTARIE

Verse 1-4 Asaph laments that the country has been invaded, many people are slaughtered and Israel has become a reproach to the neighbors.
Verse 5-12 He pleads with God not to be angry with Israel, but to use wrath against the enemies for what they have done to them. He asks that Israel’s sins be purged, and that the Lord would preserve Israelites who are prisoners and bring seven fold judgments on the enemies who reproach Him.
Verse 13. Then they would give eternal thanks and praise Him forever.
