Psalms 71 PRAYER IN TIME OF OLD AGE
IN thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
2 Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.
3 Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
5 For thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth.
6 By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.
7 I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.
8 Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.
9 Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.
10 For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,
11 Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for there is none to deliver him.
12 O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help.
13 Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.
14 But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
15 My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.
16 I will go in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.
17 O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.
18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.
19 Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
20 Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
21 Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.
22 I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.
24 My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.
1In thee, O Lord, doe I put my trust, let me neuer be put to confusion.
2Deliuer mee in thy righteousnesse, and cause me to escape: incline thine eare vnto me, and saue me.
3Bee thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast giuen commandement to saue mee, for thou art my rocke, and my fortresse.
4Deliuer me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the vnrighteous, and cruel man.
5For thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth.
6By thee haue I bene holden vp from the wombe: thou art hee that tooke mee out of my mothers vowels, my praise shalbe continually of thee.
7I am as a wonder vnto many, but thou art my strong refuge.
8Let my mouth bee filled with thy praise, and with thy honour all the day.
9Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.
10For mine enemies speake against mee: and they that lay waite for my soule, take counsell together,
11Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him, for there is none to deliuer him.
12O God, be not farre from mee: O my God, make haste for my helpe.
13Let them be confounded and consumed, that are aduersaries to my soule: let them bee couered with reproch and dishonour, that seeke my hurt.
14But I wil hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
15My mouth shall shew foorth thy righteousnesse, and thy saluation all the day: for I know not the numbers thereof.
16I will goe in the strength of the Lord God: I will make mention of thy righteousnesse, euen of thine onely.
17O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto haue I declared thy wonderous workes.
18Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, forsake me not: vntill I haue shewed thy strength vnto this generation, and thy power to euery one that is to come.
19Thy righteousnes also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like vnto thee?
20Thou which hast shewed mee great, and sore troubles, shalt quicken mee againe, and shalt bring mee vp againe from the depthes of the earth.
21Thou shalt increase my greatnesse, and comfort me on euery side.
22I will also praise thee with the psalterie, euen thy trueth, O my God: vnto thee will I sing withthe harpe, O thou Holy one of Israel.
23My lippes shall greatly reioyce when I sing vnto thee: and my soule, which thou hast redeemed.
24My tongue also shall talke of thy righteousnesse all the day long: for they are confounded, forthey are brought vnto shame, that seeke my hurt.

1 In you, LORD, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame.
2 In your justice rescue and deliver me; listen to me and save me!
3 Be my rock of refuge, my stronghold to give me safety; for you are my rock and fortress.
4 My God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked, from the clutches of the evil and violent.
5 You are my hope, Lord; my trust, GOD, from my youth.
6 On you I have depended since birth; from my mother’s womb you are my strength;my hope in you never wavers.
7 I have become a portent to many, but you are my strong refuge!
8 My mouth shall be filled with your praise, shall sing your glory every day.
9 Do not cast me aside in my old age; as my strength fails, do not forsake me.
10For my enemies speak against me; they watch and plot against me.
11 They say, “God has abandoned him. Pursue, and seize him! No one will come to the rescue!”12God, be not far from me; my God, hasten to help me.
13 Bring to a shameful endthose who attack me; Cover with contempt and scornthose who seek my ruin.
14 I will always hope in youand add to all your praise.
15 My mouth shall proclaim your just deeds, day after day your acts of deliverance, though I cannot number them all.
16 I will speak of the mighty works of the Lord; O GOD, I will tell of your singular justice.
17God, you have taught me from my youth;to this day I proclaim your wondrous deeds.
18 Now that I am old and gray, do not forsake me, God, That I may proclaim your mightto all generations yet to come,Your power
19 and justice, God,to the highest heaven. You have done great things; O God, who is your equal?
20 Whatever bitter afflictions you sent me, you would turn and revive me. From the watery depths of the earthonce more raise me up.
21 Restore my honor;turn and comfort me,
22 That I may praise you with the lyre for your faithfulness, my God,And sing to you with the harp, O Holy One of Israel!
23 My lips will shout for joy as I sing your praise;my soul, too, which you have redeemed.
24 Yes, my tongue shall recountyour justice day by day. For those who sought my ruinhave been shamed and disgraced.
V 1-4 This Psalm is the prayer of an unnamed older person, v 18. He will continue to trust the Lord, but asks that he not be a laughing stock to any, and that he will be delivered out of the hand of enemies.
V 5-8. He has trusted fully in the Lord from as young as he can remember. Though some have wondered at him, he would continue to trust in God as his refuge.
V 9-13 He asks God not to forsake him in his old age, because there were some who thought He had, and they could persecute him. So he urges God to hurry to his aid and put them to shame.
V 14-24 This aged Psalmist had trusted God all his life and intends to continue to do so and to tell others about Him. He declares in v 17, 18 that he has been declaring God’s wondrous works and wants to continue to do so to the current generation. He emphasizes again the greatness of God and his determination to keep on praising Him and telling others about him.
