Psalms 85 Invoking God's Mercy

KING JAMES BIBLE

To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.
LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.
2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.
3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.
4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.
5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?
6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
7 Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation.
8 I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase.

13 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

KING JAMES 1611

1A prayer of Dauid. Bow downe thine eare, O Lord, heare me: for I am poore & needy.

2Preserue my soule, for I am holy: O thou my God, saue thy seruant, that trusteth in thee.

3Be merciful vnto me, O Lord: for I cry vnto thee daily.

4Reioyce the soule of thy seruant: for vnto thee (O Lord) doe I lift vp my soule.

5For thou Lord art good, and ready to forgiue: and plenteous in mercie vnto all them that call vpon thee.

6Giue eare O Lord, vnto my prayer: and attend to the voice of my supplications.

7In the day of my trouble I will call vpon thee: for thou wilt answere mee.

8Among the gods there is none like vnto thee (O Lord:) neither are there any workes like vnto thy workes.

9All nations whom thou hast made, shall come and worship before thee, O Lord: and shall glorifie thy Name.

10For thou art great, and doest wonderous things: thou art God alone.

11Teach me thy way, O Lord, I will walke in thy trueth: vnite my heart to feare thy Name.

12I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I wil glorifie thy Name for euermore.

13For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast deliuered my soule from the lowest hell.

14O God, the proud are risen against mee, and the assemblies of violent men haue sought after my soule: and haue not set thee before them.

15But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious: long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and trueth.

16O turne vnto me, and haue mercie vpon me, giue thy strength vnto thy seruant: and saue the sonne of thine handmaid.

17Shew me a token for good, that they which hate me may see it, and bee ashamed: because thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 [For the choirmaster Of the sons of Korah Psalm] Yahweh, you are gracious to your land, you bring back the captives of Jacob,

2 you take away the guilt of your people, you blot out all their sin.

3 You retract all your anger, you renounce the heat of your fury.

4 Bring us back, God our Saviour, appease your indignation against us!

5 Will you be angry with us for ever? Will you prolong your wrath age after age?

6 Will you not give us life again, for your people to rejoice in you?

7 Show us, Lord, your faithful love, grant us your saving help.

8 I am listening. What is God's message? Yahweh's message is peace for his people, for his faithful, if only they renounce their folly.

9 His saving help is near for those who fear him, his glory will dwell in our land.

10 Faithful Love and Loyalty join together, Saving Justice and Peace embrace.

11 Loyalty will spring up from the earth, and Justice will lean down from heaven.

12 Yahweh will himself give prosperity, and our soil will yield its harvest.

13 Justice will walk before him, treading out a path.
