Psalms 53 A LAMENT OVER WIDESPREAD CORRUPTION

KING JAMES BIBLE

To the chief Musician upon Mahalath, Maschil, A Psalm of David.

1 THE fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.
3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God.
5 There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them.
6 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 For the leader; according to Mahalath. A maskil of David.

2 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They act corruptly and practice injustice; there is none that does good.

3 God looks out from the heavens upon the children of Adam, To see if there is a discerning person who is seeking God.

4 All have gone astray; each one is altogether perverse. There is not one who does what is good, not even one.

5 Do they not know better, those who do evil, who feed upon my people as they feed upon bread? Have they not called upon God?

6 They are going to fear his name with great fear, though they had not feared it before. For God will scatter the bones of those encamped against you. They will surely be put to shame, for God has rejected them.

7 Who will bring forth from Zion the salvation of Israel? When God reverses the captivity of his people Jacob will rejoice and Israel will be glad.

COMMENTARIE

This Psalm of David is another version of Psalm 14

v 2,3. As the Lord looked down He could see that mankind had become filthy.

v 4-5. The wicked have consistently despised the Jews and believers and think they will never be brought to justice for it. Some think they do God service Jn. 16:2.

v 6. David is longing for the establishment of God’s kingdom.
