Psalms 90 God Is Eternal

Psalms 90 FOURTH BOOK - PSALMS 90-106 GOD'S ETERNITY AND HUMAN FRALITY

KING JAMES BIBLE

A Prayer of Moses the man of God.
LORD, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
3 Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.
4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.
5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.
6 In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.
7 For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.
8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.
9 For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.
10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.
12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
13 Return, O Lord, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.
14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.
16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.
17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our refugethrough all generations.

2 Before the mountains were born, the earth and the world brought forth, from eternity to eternity you are God.

3 You turn humanity back into dust, saying, “Return, you children of Adam!”

4 A thousand years in your eyes are merely a day gone by, Before a watch passes in the night,

5 you wash them away; They sleep, and in the morning they sprout again like an herb.

6 In the morning it blooms only to pass away; in the evening it is wilted and withered.

7 Truly we are consumed by your anger, filled with terror by your wrath.

8 You have kept our faults before you, our hidden sins in the light of your face.

9 Our life ebbs away under your wrath; our years end like a sigh.

10 Seventy is the sum of our years, or eighty, if we are strong; Most of them are toil and sorrow; they pass quickly, and we are gone.

11 Who comprehends the strength of your anger? Your wrath matches the fear it inspires.

12 Teach us to count our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.

13 Relent, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants!

14 Fill us at daybreak with your mercy, that all our days we may sing for joy.

15 Make us glad as many days as you humbled us, for as many years as we have seen trouble.

16 Show your deeds to your servants, your glory to their children.

17 May the favor of the Lord our God be ours. Prosper the work of our hands! Prosper the work of our hands!

COMMENTARIE

In Section 4 of the Psalms, Psalm 90 was written by Moses (so it is the oldest of the Psalms), Psalms 101 and 103 by David, and the rest of the 17 are anonymous.

Verses 1-6 In addition to God being eternal, Ps. 145:3 adds that He is unsearchable. Some foolishly use 1000 years as 1 day to explain length of creation, which is foolish because it make plants live 1000 years without sunshine. Man’s life span compared to eternity is even less than a withering plant after it is cut off.

Verses 7-12 God knows even our secret sins, so we spend all our years under His wrath, not like it was originally planned for Adam. Since we only have 70 years more or less, so we need wisdom in making our time count for the Lord, v 12.

Verses 13-17 Moses pleads for compassion from the Lord so that His people can live rejoicing daily. V 17 means a request that we might have a meaningful life.
