Psalms 81 AN ADMONITION TO FIDELITY
To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of Asaph.
SING aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.
2 Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery.
3 Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.
4 For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.
5 This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.
6 I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.
7 Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.
8 Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;
9 There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.
10 I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
11 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.
13 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
14 I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.
15 The haters of the Lord should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever.
16 He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.

1 For the leader; “upon the gittith.” Of Asaph.
2 Sing joyfully to God our strength; raise loud shouts to the God of Jacob!
3 Take up a melody, sound the timbrel, the pleasant lyre with a harp.
4 Blow the shofar at the new moon, at the full moon, on our solemn feast.
5 For this is a law for Israel, an edict of the God of Jacob,
6 He made it a decree for Joseph when he came out of the land of Egypt.
7 I heard a tongue I did not know: “I removed his shoulder from the burden; his hands moved away from the basket.
8 In distress you called and I rescued you; I answered you in secret with thunder; At the waters of Meribah I tested you:
9 ‘Listen, my people, I will testify against you If only you will listen to me, Israel!
10 There shall be no foreign god among you; you shall not bow down to an alien god.
11 ‘I am the LORD your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. Open wide your mouth that I may fill it.’
12 But my people did not listen to my words; Israel would not submit to me.
13 So I thrust them away to the hardness of their heart; ‘Let them walk in their own machinations.’
14 O that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways,
15 In a moment I would humble their foes, and turn back my hand against their oppressors.
16 Those who hate the LORD will try flattering him, but their fate is fixed forever.
17 But Israel I will feed with the finest wheat, I will satisfy them with honey from the rock.”
Verses 1-5 Asaph calls the people to come celebrate deliverance at the Feast of Tabernacles.
Verses 6-13. He mentions the burden in Egypt, the secret place of thunder which was the pillar of cloud or fire, the testing at bitter waters of Meribah, and speaks of giving them up to their heart’s desire as in 78:29.
Verses 14-16 From v 6 Asaph is speaking as the voice of God. Here He promises to subdue their enemies and give them abundant food, if they would just obey Him.
