Psalms 38 AFFLICTED SINNER PRAYER

KING JAMES BIBLE

1 O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
2 For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.
3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.
4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.
5 My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.
6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.
7 For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.
8 I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.
9 Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.
10 My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.
11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.
12 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.
13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.
14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.
15 For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.
16 For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.
17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.
18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.
19 But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.
20 They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is.
21 Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me.
22 Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.

KING JAMES 1611

1A Psalme of Dauid, to bring to remembrance. O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

2For thine arrowes sticke fast in me; and thy hand presseth me sore.

3There is no soundnesse in my flesh, because of thine anger: neither is there any rest in my bones, because of my sinne.

4For mine iniquities are gone ouer mine head: as an heauy burden, they are too heauie for me.

5My wounds stinke, and are corrupt: because of my foolishnesse.

6I am troubled, I am bowed downe greatly; I goe mourning all the day long.

7For my loynes are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundnesse in my flesh.

8I am feeble and sore broken; I haue roared by reason of the disquietnesse of my heart.

9Lord, all my desire is before thee: and my groning is not hid from thee.

10My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eies, it also is gone from me.

11My louers and my friends stand a loofe from my sore: and my kinsmen stand a farre off.

12They also that seeke after my life, lay snares for me: and they that seeke my hurt, speake mischieuous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.

13But I, as a deafe man, heard not; and I was as a dumbe man that openeth not his mouth.

14Thus I was as a man that heareth not; and in whose mouth are no reproofes.

15For in thee, O Lord, doe I hope: thou wilt heare, O Lord my God.

16For I said, heare me, least otherwise they should reioyce ouer me: when my foot slippeth, they magnifie themselues against me.

17For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.

18For I will declare mine iniquitie; I will be sory for my sinne.

19But mine enemies are liuely, and they are strong: and they that hate mee wrongfully, are multiplied.

20They also that render euill for good, are mine aduersaries: because I follow the thing that good is.

21Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not farre from me.

22Make haste to helpe mee, O Lord my saluation.

THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE

1 A psalm of David. For remembrance.

2 LORD, do not punish me in your anger; in your wrath do not chastise me!

3 Your arrows have sunk deep in me; your hand has come down upon me.

4 There is no wholesomeness in my flesh because of your anger; there is no health in my bones because of my sin.

5 My iniquities overwhelm me, a burden too heavy for me.

6 Foul and festering are my sores because of my folly.

7 I am stooped and deeply bowed; every day I go about mourning.

8 My loins burn with fever; there is no wholesomeness in my flesh.

9 I am numb and utterly crushed; I wail with anguish of heart.

10 My Lord, my deepest yearning is before you; my groaning is not hidden from you.

11 My heart shudders, my strength forsakes me; the very light of my eyes has failed.

12 Friends and companions shun my disease; my neighbors stand far off.

13 Those who seek my life lay snares for me; they seek my misfortune, they speak of ruin; they plot treachery every day.

14 But I am like the deaf, hearing nothing, like the mute, I do not open my mouth,

15 I am even like someone who does not hear, who has no answer ready.

16 LORD, it is for you that I wait; O Lord, my God, you respond.

17 For I have said that they would gloat over me, exult over me if I stumble.

18 I am very near to falling; my wounds are with me always.

19 I acknowledge my guilt and grieve over my sin.

20 My enemies live and grow strong, those who hate me grow numerous fraudulently,

21 Repaying me evil for good, accusing me for pursuing good.

22 Do not forsake me, O LORD; my God, be not far from me!

23 Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my salvation!

COMMENTARIE

This is a Psalm of David to bring to remembrance Godly sorrow for his sin. David prays for relief from God’s severe discipline upon him. He was experiencing both physical pain and emotional unrest, v 3. Some say that verse 7 implies inflammation of the kidneys. Others feel that verses 5-7 and 11 speak more clearly of diseases brought about by his foolishness, v 5  involving immorality. More important for all of us, he had sinned and was being disciplined by the Lord.

V 13-23 make it clear that his hope is in the Lord, with the last two verse a plea for the Lord to stay near him and help him.
